EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Project Descriptions:

The RiverSmart MacFarland project is along portions of Georgia Avenue, Allison Street, and Iowa Avenue and some of the nearby alleys. Work includes construction of facilities to reduce stormwater volume runoff. Work includes the construction of permeable paving and bioretention areas.

Permeable paving in alleys, roads, and parking lanes provides on-site drainage and infiltration for storm water. Bioretention areas, also called rain gardens, in tree areas and curb bump-outs use landscaped planting areas to hold storm water and infiltrate into the soil. When constructed, the storm water flow will be monitored and measured to calculate the stormwater runoff reduction and evaluate its effectiveness for use in other neighborhoods.

The RiverSmart Lafayette project covers areas along 33rd, Rittenhouse, Quesada, 32nd and

Patterson Streets. Work includes construction of permeable paving and bioretention areas. Permeable paving in alleys, roads, and parking lanes provide on-site infiltration areas for storm water. Bioretention areas, also called rain gardens, in tree areas and curb bump-outs use landscaped plantings to hold storm water and infiltrate into the soil.

The Green Alleys Chevy Chase project reconstructs the alleys between Rittenhouse St., Broad

Branch Rd., 34th Place, 33rd Street and Quesada St. The entire alley will be constructed using full

width pervious concrete, center strip of pervious concrete, and standard concrete. This project reduces the quantity of storm water runoff and improves the water quality prior to it entering the

Districts storm sewer system.

Proposed work will include but not be limited to:

Bioretention areas, or rain gardens in tree box areas

Permeable paving in alleys, roads, and parking lanes

DAILY WORK PERFORMED

Field construction activities performed during this period:

 Monday 8/4/14:

MacFarland: The contractor began work on Iowa Avenue NW, STA 20+15 and STA 24+85 with construction of two driveway entrances. The contractor demolished existing concrete pavement,

removed debris, compacted subgrade and graded surface to slope. Then, poured concrete for driveway and embedded fabric wire mesh into concrete. Afterwards, finished the bottom part of driveway concrete to slope to gutter pan. A sample of concrete was taken and six cylinders made for testing strength of concrete at DDOT. In addition, began construction of PPF 2 and PPF 34 with construction of two Entrance Driveways by saw cutting and demolition of pavement. Also, tree protection for seven trees on the east bound lane of Allison St from St. 102+00 to St. 106+00 2.3 was placed. Lastly, in sections PPF7 and PPF 39, removed and reinstalled brick pavers to meet contract specifications under the direction of Bob of Eagle Bay.

Chevy Chase: The contractor did not work on site this day. A work attempt by the contractor on Alley 6 was stopped by the inspector due to the conflict with the public notice which was based on the

contractor’s schedule.

 Tuesday 8/5/14:

MacFarland: The contractor continued construction of PPF 2, work this day was from St 102+27 to St 103+07. Work began with hard surface and common excavation, followed by installation of Geotextile fabric to the gutter side of excavations and waterproof membrane to roadway side of excavation with. #8 stone filter layer was placed as well as #2 stone. Lastly, 6 inch PVC

perforated drain pipe was installed.

Chevy Chase: The contractor did not work on site this day.

 Wednesday 8/6/14:

MacFarland: The contractor continued work on PPF 2 between STA 102+27 to STA 103+07. The remaining section, was excavated and the contractor completed the placement of Geotextile & water proofing Geomembrane. , double washed #8, #2 & #57 stone in addition to the underdrain pipes at the location. The crew then moved to PPF 34 and began demolition of pavement.

Chevy Chase: The contractor started the construction of the permeable interlocking concrete pavers, Alley 6, located between Quesada Street, at STA. 303+98 and Rittenhouse Street, at STA. 306+28. The contractor began the operation with a 5.0' wide saw cut and demolition of the existing pavement from STA. 303+98 to STA. 304+70.

 Thursday 8/7/14:

MacFarland: The contractor continued working on PPF 34 with hard surface excavation and common Excavation this day.

Chevy Chase: The contractor continued the construction of the permeable interlocking concrete paver Alley 6 located between Quesada Street, NW at STA. 303+98 and Rittenhouse Street, NW at STA. 306+28. Hard and common excavation was completed and placement waterproofing

Geomembrane and double washed #2 stone was started. In addition, a technician from Craig Testing Laboratories of Maryland, Inc. (CTL) arrived on site at 8:00 am to cut cores for pervious concrete previously poured areas.

 Friday 8/8/14:

MacFarland: The contractor continued work on PPF 34 and PPF 2 at various locations within these areas which was split into three (3) sections. Section 1, STA 103+36 to STA 103+96 was filled with #57 stone and compacted, also, edge curb forming was started. Section 2, STA 103+96 to STA 104+51, all excavation up to subgrade was completed and will be filled with stone after Lateral gas lines have been inspected by Washington Gas. Section 3, STA 104+51 to STA 104+89, a Test Pit was dug, followed by common excavation and stone placement. Lastly, Edge curb concrete was poured for PPF 2 and Section 1 PPF 34. A sample of concrete was taken from the middle of the pour and four cylinders made for strength testing at DDOT Lab.

Chevy Chase: The contractor continued the construction of the permeable interlocking concrete paver Alley 6 located between Quesada Street, NW at STA. 303+98 and Rittenhouse Street, NW at STA. 306+28. The contractor completed the hard and common excavations and started the placement waterproofing Geomembrane and double washed #2 stone between STA. 304+25 and STA. 304+55. In addition, a Test Pit was conducted to locate a sewer service line.
