Public Health in Kirklees

Health and wellbeing is the responsibility of everyone whether as

an individual or an organisation.

The Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy (JHWS) for Kirklees is led by the

Kirklees Health and Wellbeing Board and sets out a vision of Kirklees in

2020 where people live their lives confidently, in better health, for longer and

avoidable differences in health have been reduced.

Why?

Improving the wellbeing and health of local people will:

• Improve people’s lives and the communities in which they live;

• Support changing needs.

Delivering the JHWS will also minimise the impact of reductions in public

spending and welfare reform by limiting duplication and making the best use of

the resources we have.

How?

Delivering the JHWS with our workforce including the Council, NHS,

Community/Voluntary and Faith sectors.

Service providers across Kirklees will need to have skills, knowledge and the

confidence to focus effort on those who most need support, based on health

inequalities and a person’s ability to self-manage their own behaviour change.

They will need to be able to respond to changing health needs as the population

changes and lives longer.

Individual staff can make a difference by understanding their role in prevention:-

supporting people (individuals and communities) to be more independent,

resilient and take actions to improve their own health and wellbeing.

(5)

Ways to Health and Wellbeing

(Making Every Contact Count)

Ways to Health and Wellbeing is Kirklees Council’s behaviour change skills programme

developed from the NHS Making Every Contact Count. The Ways to Health and Wellbeing

makes the link between lifestyle behaviours and the wider determinants of health and sets

them in the context of people’s lives. Our Role is to create an environment where making

healthy choices is the norm. We know that lecturing people is not effective so instead we

are trying to provide a nudge in the right direction by building social momentum behind

behaviour change.

Ways to Health and Wellbeing Training Levels

We currently offer three levels which are taken from a wider national behaviour change framework.

Level 1 – Just A Nudge

Participants will be able to engage with individuals and use basic

communication to raise awareness of the benefits of lifestyle

behaviour and signpost them to sources of support.

Level 2 - Brief Interventions

Participants will be able to select and use brief lifestyle

behaviours change techniques that help individuals take action

about their lifestyle behaviour choices. These techniques will

include evidenced brief intervention approaches such as basic

motivational interviewing.

Level 3 - Advanced

Participants will be able to select and use appropriate techniques

and approaches to provide support to individuals as they change

their lifestyle behaviours and facilitate individuals to maintain

these changes over the longer term. These techniques include

motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural approaches (CBA)

and solution focused approaches.
