ROSH HASHANAH

5752

No matter how often I see the words "Rosh Hashanah" these two words

convey to me a unique sense of inner excitement. The days just prior to

Roth Hashanah are filled with a sense of expectation that we are heading

toward a unique experience. I feel this every year as we approach the Days

of Awe, even as I feel a great responsibility to enable you to experience the

power and beauty of this Holy Day.

Hope springs eternal in a Rabbi's heart that this will be the year when we

may kindle and rekindle in our peoples' being the flame of Jewish idealism,

and a new commitment to our heritage to bring more light to our lives, our

homes, and our suffering world. What is our New Year for if not for

another chance to sense a new beginning as a person, as a family, as a

people? We need the vitality of a spiritual rebirth to face the future.

This past year unleashed events of great importance for the Jewish people;

the dramatic rescue of Ethiopian Jewry, the continuing exodus of Soviet

Jewry from danger to freedom and the forthcoming Peace Conference on

the Middle East. All of these will impact greatly on the future of our

people. To meet these challenges we need to know who we are and what

is the enduring source of our strength.

On Rosh Hashanah we understand and experience in a new light that our

caring, our reverence for life, our solidarity with our brothers and sisters,

our timeless faith, all come together in our being, moving us to a new

resolve to live significantly, to make a difference.

May this Rosh Hashanah usher in a year of spiritual rebirth for our people,

a year of peace for Israel and its neighbors, a year when the last tyrant is

vanquished and the liberated rejoice in the sweetness of freedom.

Judy joins me in wishing our beloved Rodef Shalom family Shanah Tovah.

FROM THE EDUCATOR'S CORNER- Religious School Reminders:

Teach Them To Swim..."

As we prepare for the opening of school I am

reminded of a section of Talmud which outlines

parents responsibilities to their children. One

specific responsibility is that we teach our children

to swim! Unbeknownst to most of us moderns, we

have taken this particular part of our heritage

seriously. Who would think of overlooking this

important skill? If we are unable to do it ourselves

we surely engage instructors to do the job and, of

course, we encourage our offspring to practice

learned water skills in pools, lakes and oceans.

Often we join in and swim with them.

So it is with Torah! It is our parental

responsibility to teach our children and, because we

want to do a thorough job, we turn to the Temple

to provide a Jewish education for our children. The

Temple creates classes for the student body which

numbers well over five hundred youngsters, hires a

fine staff, provides books and supplies and plans

special events such as field trips and retreats.

All the components are in place but, just as

with swimming, parents must provide many

opportunities to practice the Jewish life skills,

traditions and values taught in class.

Put another way, Shabbat prayers learned

but unused, holiday knowledge not transformed into

family traditions, and Jewish values which are taught

but not lived, are quickly put aside and forgotten.

We are wonderful at providing opportunities for our

youngsters to swim. Now, as we approach the new

school year and a new Jewish year, we at the

Temple enlist your support and urge you to swim in

the Jewish stream of life and provide many practice

opportunities for your young students.

Judy Seiff, RJE

schedules take shape you may find a need to change

Religious School schedules. We urge you to call

(532-2207) before conflicts cause crises! Well do

our best to work with you in the inevitable juggling

act of the modern day suburban family.

CONSECRATION/SIMCHAT TORAH

Families with children in first grade and those

in grades two or three who have not been

consecrated will receive information about this

years ceremony (September 29 at 7:00 p.m.) in the

Religious School class information packet.

Consecration marks a child's formal introduction to

the study of Torah. It takes place at Simchat Torah

when Jews the world over celebrate the annual cycle

of the reading of Torah. Each participating child

receives a certificate and a small Torah to mark the

occasion. Reservations for participation are a must

so that appropriate preparations can be made. Call

the school office (532-2207) prior to September 20

to provide us with necessary information if you have

not already mailed in your form.

SISTERHOOD

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

IMPORTANT!

0

Due to the High Holy Days, our opening meeting of

the 1991-1992 season will be THURSDAY,

SEPTEMBER 26, 10:00 AM at the home of Ruth

Sachs, 8340 Greensboro Drive, Apt. 926, McLean.

Roz Aniss will lead the discussion of Because it is

My Heart by Joyce Carol Oates. It is an excellent

book and is available at the libraries under fiction.

This is a very important meeting and your

attendance is truly needed. Bring your suggestions

and information about the availability of books you

would like to have included in the coming year's

selections.

Our hostesses graciously offer their homes for our

"get togethers" so would you please call Ruth at

790-0455 if you plan to attend.

We wish you and all of our people a year of love,

peace, and good health.

Shalom

Lillian Pilzer & Pauline Rubin

Co-Chairmen

It is with great sadness that we note the

recent death

of

Norma Helen Dektor.

She was a truly dedicated member

of

Sisterhood, our Temple librarian, and a

friend to all who knew her. She will

surely be missed.

Being so far away from my family

in Israel, you, as my Temple family with

your cards, calls, and contributions at

the time of my mother's death gave me

a great deal of support and comfort.

My heartfelt thanks for being what

you are, a real family.

Ziva Zysman

Summer is over and you're feeling the

blahs. Never fear - Sisterhood is here!

Once again we are gearing up for a great

year filled with food for thought, friends for

the soul, and fun for the spirit.

We are excited that our September

program features MIRIAM KLEIMAN, a

research analyst with AIPAC (American

Israel Public Affairs Committee). With

Jewish political power at a crossroads and

U.S. - Israeli relations in a state of daily

flux, this is a program too important to

miss. Miss Kleiman will be bringing us an

up to the minute briefing on the Middle

East peace talks, and the hostage

situation, the aftermath of Desert Storm

and answer any questions that you may

have. Our previous AIPAC program was

fantastic, so don't be left saying "I should

have attended." Join us September 11 at

10:00 a.m. in the Social Hall for a

fascinating program plus coffee, cake and

schmoozing with old and new friends.

Many other exciting events are

planned for the coming year so keep an

eye out for your membership packet.

Temple Rodef Shalom is committed to providing a

It is full participation in activities that make a house

a true home. We are pleased to announce that

improved services for our members who are visually

congregation.

Large print editions of both Gates of Prayer

(Shabbat) and Gates of Repentance (High Holy

books.

A wireless radio frequency system will amplify the

speaking and music of the service for those

individuals who need help hearing. The individual

will hold a small receiver and attach a light weight

ear piece to one ear for improved hearing.

The large print prayer books and receivers are

available upon request before each service.

We will also provide oral interpreting, or signing,

during High Holy Day services and on Shabbat. The

schedule of services that will be signed for the High

Holy Days is:

HUNGARY BEFORE THE WAR

AUTHOR TO TALK ABOUT

The guest speaker at the first TRS Brotherhood

Brunch will be U.S. News & World Report and

Washington Post reporter Charles Fenyvesi, who

will talk about his recent book,

When the World Was

Whole. The book details life in Hungary before the

Holocaust. This, the first TRS Brotherhood Brunch

of the 1991-1992 year, will be held on Sunday,

September 15, 1991 at 11:00 am in the Temple

soda! hail.

The Brotherhood brunches are monthly

opportunities for all Temple members -- not merely

brotherhood members -- to get together, enjoy

pleasant company and a good bagel and lox and

scrambled egg brunch;

and to hear presentations on various matters of

interest in Jewish or community affairs. Admission

to the Brotherhood Brunches are $5.00 for

Brotherhood members and $6.00 for non-members.

The TRS Brotherhood sponsors a number of

social events during the year, and devotes its

energies and resources to numerous Temple and

community activities, with a emphasis on those

affecting youth. Membership in the TRS

Brotherhood is available to all Temple members,

and memberhip dues remain unchanged, at $18.00

per year. Those interested in becoming members of

the TRS Brotherhood may do so at the brunch, or

may contact Alan Berson at 734-0903.
