The Computer Networks Conference
The conference has been organized by the Institute of Informatics belonging to the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science of the Silesian University of Technology every year since 1993. In the year 2016, it is the 9th international edition and 23rd edition at all.
The main intention of the conference is integration of national and international scientific and industrial environments, by enabling scientists to exchange information related to research led by them. The Computer Networks (CN) conference is dedicated to all activities related to computer networks.
Our mission is to deliver a common platform for scientists, academics, researchers, students, industrialists, and other people interested in computer networks and involved in their usage and development. The conference allows attenders to exchange and improve their knowledge, experience, and skills. Special efforts are made to allow students participation too.
It was decided to divide accepted presentations into tracks which group listeners of similar interests. The tracks of the conference refer to:
computer networks
This track refers to all issues related directly to computer networks. This is the main track of the conference and most of the presented reports refer to this track.
teleinformatics and telecommunictaions
All topics connected with computer communication technologies considered in the context of computer networking and informatics are considered in this track.
new technologies
The brand new technologies, even from the edge of contemporarily familiar ones, which could be used while networking, are included in this track.
queues theory and queuing networks
In the ‘queueing’ track topics from the wide area of network modeling and analyzing are presented and discussed.
innovative applications
The CN conference gives also an opportunity to present applications from area of computer networks. Only innovative solutions are taken.
The detailed and current list of the conference topics is available on the conference website. The presented tracks and detailed topics do not limit the conference scope. The CN area constantly evolves and is updated each year. This year, it is the third time when
communications area is expected and highlighted as a separate track. The co-organizer of the conference is the Committee of Informatics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Section of Computer Network and Distributed Systems. The conference has also the technical co-sponsoring of the IEEE and the technical patronage of the iNEER. Both organizations support us in keeping conference up to date, in controlling level of its content as well as give us many suggestions, opinions and useful guidance. More about IEEE and iNEER is presented in the next chapters. The high level of the CN proceedings is also ensured by our members of Technical Program Committee, by Editors, and by the Editorial Board.
The organizers of CN conference are always open for special session proposals. It is possible to arrange a session connected with
any specific subject matter of networking aspects.
The detailed agenda of the CN2016 is available in this booklet, on the CN website, and at the posters displayed during the conference in the main halls of the hotel buildings. Nonetheless, the concise description of the key events is presented below.
At the beginning of the conference, on Tuesday, June 14, during the plenary session, very interesting keynote lectures are delivered by our eminent guests:
Natalia GAVIRIA (University of Antioquia, Colombia)
– Heterogeneous wireless networks, and possible ways of modelling.
Udo KRIEGER (University of Bamberg, Germany) – On the Dissemination of Multimedia Content in IP-Networks - Lessons Learned and New Challenges.
Marcin KAPCZYŃSKI (Strategic Business Manager, Intellectual Property & Science, Thomson Reuters, Poland) – Using Web of Science and InCites for research evaluation, strategic planning and research monitoring.
Moreover, the interesting tutorial is planned on Tuesday evening. The topic is on amateur radio networks and technologies.
Miroslav SKORIC (NIAR - Hyderabad, India, YT7MPB) – Amateur Radio Computer Networks and Communication Technologies at Home and School.

The keynotes sessions are finished by a panel intended for asking questions and discussion with our experts. We encourage attending this panel and sharing your thoughts with others. More information about the topics and professional profiles of the lecturers are presented in one of the following chapters.
On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday morning regular sessions are planned. During these sessions, participants of the CN2016 will give their speeches. The WIP session is scheduled on Friday morning where some additional speeches referencing to works in progress are presented.
Totally, there are planned 4 keynotes, one tutorial, 36 regular presentations, and 12 WIP reports.
Closing of the conference is scheduled on Friday about noon. After the conference closure, a discussion panel is available. The CN participants are expected to check out on Friday before 2 pm.
All regular conference participants receive conference books and other stuff. Some additional materials associated with the lectures as well as photos can be downloaded from the conference website. The papers connected with the presented topics are available on the publishers’ websites. Online access to the Springer’s books is granted for the limited time. Access to the Studia Informatica journal is open but the availability of the papers may by
limited at authors’ choice.
During the CN2016 conference, over 53 talks will be delivered. More than 60 participants from 12 countries are expected: Belarus, Colombia, Czech Republic, Germany, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Poland, Russia, India, United Kingdom, Ukraine, USA.

A guided tour around the palace is scheduled on Tuesday evening, about 7.30 pm.
Another guided tour to Bolesławiec and its surroundings is planned on Thursday after lunch. The trip includes old town and the Bolesławiec ceramics factory. The trip is available only to participants who have declared attendance in it while sending participation form. Please be on time. The coach will depart at 2 pm. The duration of the trip is approximately 4-5 hours.

History of the Conference
The Computer Networks conference was established in 1993 in the Institute of Informatics which belongs to the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science of the Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland. The main originator, organizer and chief of the conference Program Committee was Professor Andrzej Grzywak, the prominent specialist of network systems.
The first five editions of the conference took place in the halls of the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science of the Silesian University of Technology. In 1999 the conference was organized as an open event for the first time. The venue was the capital of the Polish Tatra Mountains, Zakopane. Each of the next editions was organized outside Gliwice, always in the mountains regions so far.

From the very beginning, for many years, Ms. Halina Węgrzyn worked actively during the conference organization, becoming the main stem of the Organization Committee. In 2007, prof. Andrzej Kwiecień became the chief of the Technical Program Committee (TPC), whereas Mr. Piotr Gaj went in for being in the chair of the Organization Committee.
In 2008 the conference form was changed into international with two official languages: English and Polish, which gave guests from abroad an opportunity to participate. Since then, the number of foreign guests is constantly increasing. Since 2015 the official language is only English.
The conference organizers have always cared about strong contact with industry. Thus, during many editions it was possible to meet representatives of various Polish and foreign companies, who shared their knowledge and experience with our participants, and simultaneously took advantage from obtaining contacts with academic society.
The extension of the conference formula became an ambition of the organizers. The scope of the conference is updated each year in consultation with partners, co-organizers, and the TPC members. The contemporary topics as well as ones from untypical domains are welcome. There are certain domains of knowledge, which apparently seem to be not directly connected with computer networks. They have been allowed to be presented during the conference, provided that they have direct connections with networking issues. The examples are domains related to nanoinformatics, quantum technologies, molecular networks, as well as biological and chemical aspects of informatics.
In the conference history, there were also events not directly connected with the subject of the conference. E.g., in 2012, a special session ‘Stefan Węgrzyn in Memoriam’ has been organized. The session was dedicated to the memory of a longtime member of the TPC. Professor Węgrzyn was a co-creator (1964) of the Faculty of Automatic Control (currently the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science) of Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. Initially he was the head of the Chair of the Automatic Control Theory and later, in years 1971 to 1995, he was director of the Institute of Informatics at the University. Professor Stefan Węgrzyn passed away on 28 July 2011.
Among the conference TPC members are specialists from various areas of the computer networks domain. Since the very beginning, the number of TPC members is increasing. Only the best specialists in their fields are engaged in the TPC activities. Starting from 16 Polish members, now there are 81 members from 20 countries: Australia, Belarus, Canada, Colombia, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, France, Italy, Netherlands, Mexico, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, UK, USA.
During all these years, the conference has become a platform of knowledge, experience, and achievements, possible to be shared, as well as facilitated in the publications of research and applications results. For many years the conference materials were published by Silesian University of Technology Publishing as ‘Science Copybooks’ in Informatics series, which had been released since 2000 as the ‘Studia Informatica’ series. In addition, based on the conference papers,
monographs were also created and published by the Polish WKŁ Publishing House. Moreover, proceedings named ‘Computer Networks’ were created in Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) series by Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg Publisher from Germany. The cooperation between CN and Springer continues from 2009. The CCIS series is indexed by DBLP, EI, Scopus and it is submitted for the inclusion in ISI Proceedings and Inspec. However, the availability in the Web of Science database is always up to decision of the service owner and with a delay. The papers published in proceedings of 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 conference editions have been already indexed by the Web of Science database.
In the current year the papers are published in CCIS series. Copies of printed books are always included free of charge in the registration packages for full participants. Below is the table with a concise summary of the conference proceedings history and basic statistics as well. Be informed, that the number of rejected papers is significantly higher than specified, because of the usage of ‘reject and resubmit’ procedure. Thanks to this way and thanks to the kindness of our reviewers, we give an opportunity to the authors to improve theirs papers in case they refer to valid and interesting topics but the content is unacceptable in the submitted form. We always make a great effort to ensure high level of papers being published. The acceptance level in the current edition is 50%.

IEEE Poland Section
IEEE is an international non-profit organization whose purpose is to support the development of technology in electronics, electrical engineering, computer engineering and related disciplines. The world has more than 470 thousand members in 160 countries: scientists, engineers, and 80 thousand students. IEEE publishes approximately 30% of the world's technical literature devoted to the electrical, electronics and computer engineering, including 144 newspapers and more than 400 publications and conference annually.
As the world's largest technical association, IEEE is comprised of a variety of groups, active in publications, conferences, and building technical communities. These units involve member outreach at both, the local and global level. There are two ways to get involved with IEEE – by area of interest or by geographic location.

Knowledge Groups
IEEE knowledge groups are member- and volunteer-driven communities, providing cutting-edge research and knowledge sharing on various topics.
Technical Councils
IEEE technical Councils are groups of Societies working together in broad areas of technology. Technical Councils sponsor member activities such as technical meetings, publishing, promoting educational activities, and developing standards. Currently, there are 7 councils as follows.

In the regions there are many local sections. For instance, in Region 8 are presently 42 sections. One of them is IEEE Poland Section. It was founded by prof. Adam Smoliński in 1972 and is currently headed by prof. Mariusz Malinowski from Warsaw University of Technology. Section is divided into more than 20 thematic units representing more than 1000 members. Among them is nearly 200 undergraduate and graduate students who are associated in five student’s branches in Opole, Poznań, Szczecin, Wrocław and Warsaw. One of the main objectives of the IEEE Poland Section is to promote new ideas coming from Polish engineers and scientists and to exchange experiences through organization and active support of scientific conferences. Currently, there are about 10 conference technically co-sponsored by the IEEE PS per year. CN is one of them. IEEE Poland Section cooperates closely with the Association of Polish Electrical Engineers (SEP), Polish Society of Theoretical and Applied Electrical (PTETiS) and the Polish Association of the Photonic (SPIE Poland Chapter).
Student Branches
Student Branches provide an opportunity for student members to begin networking in their areas of interest, and future profession. There are nearly 2,000 student branches in 80 countries, at various educational institutions.

IEEE Milestone Dedication
“First Breaking of Enigma Code, 1932-1939”
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers gives so called Milestones for an outstanding, epoch-making technical achievement in the field of electrical and electronics, emphasizing the highest rank of these achievements. Among the dozens of different types of awards and distinctions which IEEE recognizes the outstanding achievements in science and technic, the award of "Milestone" is the highest rank. This means that if the given achievement had not been occurred, the world today would look different, i.e. worse. In 2014 such a distinction was came to Poland.
Enigma is an electrically wired rotor machine. A sequence of ciphers is generated by the motion of rotors in the machine. It is one of several cipher machines that were developed for military or for
commercial use during or just after World War I. The first breakthrough in the battle to crack Nazi Germany's Enigma code was made not in Bletchley Park but in Warsaw. During the 1930s, a trio of Polish mathematicians Marian Rejewski (1905 – 1980), Henryk Zygalski (1907 – 1978), and Jerzy Różycki (1909 – 1942) solved the German Enigma cipher machine and broke Enigma messages. Working with engineers from AVA Radio Manufacturing Company they built the bomba – the first cryptanalytic machine designed to attack Enigma and one of many cryptanalytic machines to be built by Allied codebreakers.
The debt owed by British wartime codebreakers to their Polish colleagues was acknowledged in July 3rd, 2014 at a quiet gathering of spy chiefs. The receiving of the IEEE milestone was celebrating during the international seminar in Warsaw University of Technology, August 5th, 2014. The special IEEE Milestone Plaque Dedication was established and located at the address: Śniadeckich Street 8, 00-956 Warsaw, Poland, GPS (latitude, longitude) 52.2213787; 21.0146535, near the Mathematics Institute of Polish Academy of Science.

Topic: ‘Heterogeneous wireless networks, and possible ways of modelling’ Abstract: Over the past decade, we have witnessed a very rapid evolution in wireless networks. Service and technology convergence are now a reality that has been pushed not only by the manufacturers, but also by the needs of the users. These changes have a great impact on society, but even more in the technology field, where we constantly face new challenges, that start at the very physical level of the devices and network channels, but go all the way to higher layers. We are faced now with new architectures, and hence need to look for alternative functionalities and design approaches.
In this context, Next Generation Wireless Networks (NGWNs) have become a key concept in the wireless industry, in order to support 4G and 5G networks. The advantages of these new systems, however, come with an increasing complexity and a highly dynamic behavior. One of the main issues in this scenario is the selection of the radio access network, in environments where several technologies coexist. Both users and operators require an efficient mechanism that allows selecting or assigning the best possible Radio Access Network (RAN) to the users. On one hand, this mechanism should guarantee that the users gain access to the available resources and services, while getting the best quality of service (QoS) and (QoE). On the other hand, the goal is also to guarantee that the operator makes an optimal use of its radio resources (i.e., in terms of load balancing).
The Access Network Selection (ANS) problem can be defined and modeled as a dynamic decision-making problem in distributed or centralized way in presence of uncertainty and unpredictable environments, like NGWN. Basically, we are facing an environment where multiple entities should make decisions simultaneously. Until now, several decision-theoretic approaches have been used to model the ANS problem as a dynamic-decision process: Markov Decision Process, Dynamic Game Theory, Stochastic Optimization, etc. Likewise, different solution methods have been employed to solve the decision-theoretic models such as: dynamic programming, machine learning and linear programming. All of these decision-theoretic frameworks and their solutions methods have advantages/disadvantages as well as strengthens/weakness.
This talk presents a broad overview of these methods, focusing on their advantages and challenges, while analyzing open research issues.

Topic: ‘Military Applications of Internet of Things - Challenges for Security and Trust’
Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly emerging a world-wide technology with a focus on civilian applications. These include smart city initiatives, wearable devices for near real-time health monitoring, smart homes and buildings, smarter vehicles, etc. The IoT represents a radical evolution of the current Internet into a Network of Interconnected Objects that not only harvest information from the environment (by sensing) and also let on interacting objects between themselves and with the physical world. It is recognized that many of aforementioned civilian technologies may be applicable to the military domain and bring benefit either by being able to do things better, or less expensively, or simply do things that were not possible in the past. In the military environment, IoT has the potential to connect all kinds of forces and weapon platforms in the whole battlefield to form one information network, which will promote information real-time sharing, shorten the decision-making and command timelines, and increase joint operational efficiency.
The presentation aims at analyzing the actual situation of some IoT technology deployment in the context of its application in some military significant situations. Potential areas of military applications of the IoT which include: Logistics - command and control of combined operations logistics support; Situational Awareness – building on the tactical level of a battlefield; and Medical Care - battlefield health monitoring, patients monitoring, etc., will be discussed.
Military applications of the IoT raises important questions and introduces new challenges for the security and trust management. A military perspective on the security and trust of IoT applications will be provided. Security challenges related to military applications of IoT and possible approaches to solving some of them will be discussed, including for example, relevant security mechanisms based on object level protection and cryptographic access control, protocol adaptions and scalability properties.
One of the another big problem is heterogeneity. In the IoT there exists in general a large heterogeneity of objects, their capabilities and the technologies used for realizing the services to build IoT applications. In the military domain there is additionally a large heterogeneity of the communication technologies that transmit data between communicating entities. Some aspects that have to be addressed for the realization of an IoT within military domain will be also presented.
Zbigniew Ekspedyt ZIELIŃSKI received the M.Sc. in computer sciences from the Cybernetics Faculty of Military University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland in 1978, and the Ph.D. degree in computer systems from Military University of Communications, St. Petersburg in 1988 and D.Sc. (habilitation) from Military University of Technology in 2012. He is currently an Associate Professor of Computer Systems in the Institute of Teleinformatics and Automation of Cybernetics Faculty, Military University of Technology.
He has authored or coauthored over 90 papers in the refereed journals and conference proceedings, 2 monographs, several technical reports and expertises. His current research interests are in the areas of computer systems dependability and security, fault-tolerant systems, computer network diagnosis, security and trust management within Internet of Things, as well formal methods, model verification and validation (V&V).
R&D projects he participated both as a team member and as a project head concerned embedded real-time avionics computer systems, measurement systems with application of a distributed expert
system, dependability and security of ICT systems and microprocessor-based systems and computer systems for special MLS applications.
Currently he is the chair of the Research Task Group within NATO IST S&TO Panel on Military Application of Internet of Things.
His teaching activity covered several lectures as operating systems, dependable computer systems, computer networks, dependability and diagnostics of computer networks, modeling of teleinformatics systems.

Topic: ‘Internet and Ontologies’
Abstract: Development and dissemination of computer networks is a manifestation of ongoing digital revolution. In the period of last decades computer networks have evolved to a global knowledge resource.
The first part of the lecture provides a brief reminder of the milestones in the development of computer networks that led to the current situation. Almost all data produced in the world are located on the Internet. Potentially, much of the data are interesting and used by many people. Especially, it concerns many data providing expertise domain knowledge that is needed to be known for the construction of new information systems. How to represent such knowledge on the Internet, and how to extract this knowledge from the Internet for the purpose of software development is the challenge related to the Internet development.
In the second part of the lecture, ontologies, which represent a kind of knowledge base, and which are considered as a pattern for information gathering, are shortly discussed.
The last, third part of the lecture refers to the process of software development. It is well known that the first step in the process – business modelling – has a strong influence on the efficiency of the entire process, and especially on the quality of the final software product. Thus, the acquisition of accurate domain information is the very important problem. An approach for extracting knowledge from the domain ontologies, to construct a business model – the first artefact in software system development, is presented.
Zbigniew HUZAR is a full professor at the Faculty of Informatics and Management, Wrocław University of Technology, Poland. By 2012 he served as the director of the Institute of Informatics, and from 2012 he has been head of the Department of Informatics. The scope of his scientific interests concerns software engineering, in particular, the methods of formal specification and design of real-time systems, and model-based software development. He is the author and co-author of 10 books. He is a member of the Polish Information Processing Society and co-editor-in-chief of e-Informatica Software Engineering Journal.

University of Bamberg, GermanyTopic: ‘On the Dissemination of Multimedia Content in IP-Networks – Lessons Learned and New Challenges’
Abstract: We discuss application scenarios of multimedia content dissemination in evolving next generation IP networks that have to integrate a variety of heterogeneous stationary and mobile end systems. After presenting some basic models of relevant protocol architectures, we elaborate on the role of peer-to-peer overlays to support real-time streaming. We illustrate our insights by some measurement studies and related analytic investigations. We further sketch a methodology to integrate a versatile error-correction scheme at the application layer that is derived from powerful Raptor codes. We briefly discuss its implementation on modern smartphones utilizing Android OS. In the second part of the talk we investigate the alternative of a clean slate approach that combines multipath transport and content caching to provide clusters of users with frequently requested media content at the edges of wireless access network. Finally, we point out some currently discussed research challenges if an integration of these different approaches into the rapidly evolving infrastructure of mobile edge computing is considered..
Udo KRIEGER obtained the M.Sc. degree in Applied Mathematics and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, Germany. From 1985 to 2003 he worked as professional researcher and technical project manager in the areas of telecommunications, queueing and teletraffic theory at the Research and Technology Center of Deutsche Telekom in Darmstadt and additionally as a part-time lecturer at the Computer Science Department of J.W. Goethe University, Frankfurt. Since October 2003 he is head of the Computer Networks group at Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg, Germany. Dr. Krieger has led national projects of Deutsche Telekom and participated in several EU projects like COST 257, COST 279, Eurescom P1112 and the IST-FP6 Network of Excellence EuroNGI/EuroFGI. At present, he is serving on the editorial board of the journal Computer Networks.

Abstract: The tutorial begins with introductory information about the amateur radio communications and continues with studying one of the most popular computer-related radio communication modes: the VHF/UHF and HF 'packet-radio' (other popular modes, like 'amtor', 'pactor', 'gtor', 'clover' etc. are also the options). The tutorial discusses (with examples) on how to choose inexpensive hardware and software needed for establishing the amateur radio links from home and work. The tutorial explains step-by-step how to build an AMUNET – the Amateur Radio University Network – a grid of radio stations within or between universities’ campuses and surrounding schools, including an opportunity to become a low-cost solution for communicating in educational institutions in rural areas and developing countries.
Miroslav SKORIC has 20+ years of experience in computer network administration and system maintenance (Diploma in Business Computing) and 25+ years of practice in the amateur radio (licensed amateur since 1989, amateur radio call sign YT7MPB). He has been maintaining various types of amateur radio bulletin board systems (MS DOS, Windows and Linux platforms) with VHF/HF radio frequency and Internet inputs/outputs in the local amateur radio union and clubs-societies.
Miroslav Skoric voluntarily served as the information manager and union’s secretary during the nineties – where he was compiling technical and scientific information for broadcasting via local amateur radio frequencies and repeaters. Teaching experience includes several classes in a local high-school amateur radio club; technical paper presentations during domestic and international events listed above; tutorials on the amateur radio in engineering education, one round-table session, four book chapters (the fifth in print) and several magazine/journal articles, as well as a dedicated web page http://tldp.org/HOWTO/FBB.html introducing a popular amateur radio software users’ manual.
