ARCHITECTURAL
JOURNEY TO SPAIN
14 – 25 SEPTEMBER 2016
Granada was first settled by native tribes in the prehistoric period, and was known as Ilbyr. When the Romans colonized southern Spain, they built their own city here and called it Illibris. The Arabs, invading the peninsula in the 8th century, gave it its current name of Granada. It was the last Muslim city to fall to the Christians in 1492, at the hands of Queen Isabel of Castile and her husband Ferdinand of Aragon. One of the most brilliant jewels of universal architecture is the Alhambra, a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th century.
GRANADA
SEPTEMBER 15 – 16
Seville certainly is one of the most beloved places by visitors to Spain. The city’s origin is linked with the tartessian civilization. It was called Hispalis under the Roman’s domination and Isbiliya under the Moor’s. Its golden age in history came after the discovery of America. The Cathedral, (one of Europe’s largest) with it famous Moorish minaret “La Giralda”, the enigmatic Alcázar, la Maestranza Bullring, María Luisa Park, La Macarena and the quarters of Santa Cruz with its narrow streets, flower-covered balconies and richly decorated facades, are all very representative images of Seville.
SEVILLE
SEPTEMBER 16 – 18
›› The Alhambra is a Monumental Ensemble of Historical-Artistic Monuments created over more than six hundred years by cultures as different as the Muslim, the Renaissance or the Romantic culture. The view of the Gardens of the Alhambra, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees together with the sounds of the water, isolate you from the surrounding noise, and your visit becomes an unforgettable experience.
›› In Granada´s ancient Moorish quarter, the Albayzín, a UNESCO World Heritage site, you will find the elegant Mirador de Morayma Restaurant — set in a carmen, an urban house protected from the eyes of strangers by a garden and an orchard. This is a traditional dwelling in the Albayzin and resembles a country house located in the middle of the city, but with a savvy and brilliant use of space.

The Cathedral was built on the location of the high mosque of Seville, demolished in the 15th century, and for many centuries was the biggest religious monument in all of Christendom. It contains five massive naves of Gothic style with a large transept, site of the Main Chapel, a construction which boasts a magnificent altarpiece and a Plateresque Grill. Christopher Columbus’ tomb also lies in the south transept. Outside, admire the magnificent Giralda Tower, the belfry of the Cathedral and former minaret, as well as the Patio de los Naranjos (orange tree court), previously used as the ablutions area of the mosque.
›› The neighborhood of Santa Cruz, in the historic centre of the city, is well worth visiting for its character, its alleys, wrought-iron grilles, white-washed houses, flower-filled patios and squares shaded by orange trees and palms.

Madrid is vitality and character that will soon have you hooked. This is Spain’s headiest city, where the reveling lasts long into the night and life is seized with the teeth and both hands. Strangers quickly become friends, passion blooms in an instant, and visitors are swiftly addicted to the city’s charms. Madrid is a city with ever evolving things to see and do and offers a diverse range of activities. The craving for conspicuous enjoyment, as well as the 2,800 hours of annual sunshine, turn the streets into bustling centers of public display.
MADRID
SEPTEMBER 18 – 21
Barcelona, capital of Catalonia, is a very old city. The city’s age becomes obvious in the Gothic Quarter, where there are some remains of the Roman wall and lots of Gothic buildings. In the middle of the 19th century Barcelona became a rich and fast-growing city, with a cultural and economic revival. Barcelona is today the city of the future, with new buildings, new communications networks and better service. The face of Barcelona has changed. If you still have not been, you are missing the opportunity of making acquaintance with what is the great Mediterranean City of the third millennium.
BARCELONA
SEPTEMBER 21 – 25

›› Madrid has an exceptional collection of museums, all situated by the Paseo del Prado. All of them have been restored recently, or extended by famous contemporary architects. ›› The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, whose building is the former Villahermosa Palace, is an archetype of the Madrid neoclassicism. ›› Jean Nouvel, the French architect, has transformed a patch of land behind the Reina Sofia into a miniature city of glass and steel. ›› Toledo has not changed much since the time of Greek painter “El Grego” who arrived to the city in 1570. It’s a unique city with beautiful and astonishing buildings with a diverse selection of architectural styles.
