Introduction

Coiled tubing injector load pin accuracy is vital to the success of a coiled tubing job. During recent checks of Halliburton injectors, the weight-indicating system has produced errors that may cause inaccurate injector/pipe weights to display. Duncan Technology has created a method for testing and calibration of the load pins. This method is for use on all Halliburton injectors. It is recommended that all injectors be checked and calibrated as soon as possible. This bulletin provides guidelines for the proper testing and calibration of load pins, including part numbers for required hardware.

Pull/Snub Equipment Needed

Equipment Needed for all Injector Types:

• Hollow hydraulic cylinder and electronic hydraulic gauge (Kit No. 101277804) • 1.5-in. pull bar with threaded plate (Part No. 101252836)

• Snubbing fixture (Part No. 101272549)

• 8-in. diameter backup plate (Part No. 101272875)

Additional Equipment Needed for 30/38K

• Adapter 5.0-in.-4 acme x 3-in. 1502, 30-38k (Part No. 101272566)

Additional Equipment Needed for 60K

• Adapter for injector connector, 60k (Part No. 101272568)

Procedures

The following set of procedures describe the steps for testing and calibrating load pins. 1. Verify that the hydraulic cylinder and electronic gauge have been calibrated. 2. Injector Setup/Pull Test. Follow Steps a through j below to set up the injector and

perform a pull test.

a. Check the injector's hydraulic and electronic functions with the standard power pack and control house.

(2)

b. Open the injector beams and insert the pullbar.

c. Close the injector beams with 1,500 psi. This will prevent slippage on the bar. d. Position the bottom of the pull bar approximately 2 ft below the injector

connector.

e. Install the connector adapter and the threaded plate.

f. Open the injector connector, pull the adapter up into it, then close the connector. g. Run the pull bar approximately 2 ft below the adapter.

h. Remove the threaded plate.

i. Install the cylinder in an inverted position, then reinstall the threaded plate. j. Install an 8-in. backup plate above the cylinder.

3. Transducer-Gauge Setup. Set up the transducer-gauge using Steps a through d below:

a. Plug the transducer into the hydraulic cylinder and run cable into the control house.

b. Plug the transducer cable into the electronic gauge.

c. Plug the electronic gauge power cord into a 110v power source.

d. Let the electronic gauge warm up for several minutes and zero the gauge if necessary.

Note When first powering up the electronic gauge, the display may not read zero after warm-up. If this is the case, zero the reading using the span adjustment on the gauge.

4. Unipro II Setup/Reading Counts. To view the Unipro II counts, follow Steps a through f below:

a. Press the – (minus key).

b. Press 2 to display the Unipro on Screen 2. c. Select Menu 4 ( lb)

d. Select Menu 8 (cal/test)

e. Select Menu 3 (display counts)

You can now read Unipro II counts in the bottom left corner of the screen. Note: When performing a pull test, it is not necessary to get exactly 10,000

lb, 20,000 lb, etc. on the electronic gauge. For example, an electronic gauge reading of 10,850 lb is OK.

5. Pull Test. Record test results in Table 1 or 2 (Page 3).

a. Pull the test injector at the weight intervals indicated on Table 1 (Page 3)

6. Injector Setup/Snubbing Test. Follow Steps a through f below to set up the injector and perform a snubbing test:

a. Remove the threaded plate and hydraulic cylinder from the pullbar.

b. Run the injector until threads on the pullbar are approximately 6 to 8 in. below the connector adapter.

c. Install the snubbing fixture.

d. Install the threaded plate onto the pullbar.

e. Place the hydraulic cylinder into the snubbing fixture in the upright position. f. Reconnect the transducer into the hydraulic cylinder.

7. Unipro II Setup/Entering Final Calibration Points. Follow Steps a through i below to enter calibration points and complete Unipro II final calibration:

Only 6 frequencies calibration points will be entered into the Unipro for calibration purposes:

• 4 snub weights/and corresponding frequencies (counts) • 1 zero weight/and corresponding frequencies (counts)

• 1 maximum pull weight/and corresponding frequencies (counts)

These numbers are the recorded numbers in Tables 1 or 2, 3, and 4 indicated by the ( a ) notations.

a. Verify that screen 2 is still displayed on the Unipro from Step 4. b. Select Menu 4.

c. Select Menu 8 (cal/test). d. Select Menu 4 (recalibrate).

e. Press ENTER until the 2-9 Calibration Points screen displays. f. Press the 6 key.

g. When entering calibration points, it is critical to begin with the highest snub going to the highest pull as in the example below. The negative character must be input for the snubbing weights.

h. Enter a frequency and press ENTER, then enter a weight (lb) and press ENTER*. i. Repeat Step (h) five more times for a total of six frequency/counts weight entries. j. Press ENTER until the main screen displays.

Example: 60k (frequency = counts) Frequency / -24000 lb* Frequency / -12000 lb* Frequency / -8000 lb* Frequency / -4000 lb* Frequency / 0 lb* Frequency / 60000 lb*

*Data from pull and snub calibration tests to be entered into Unipro II for final calibration.

8. Verify calibration. To verify the calibration results, perform another pull and snub test. Then verify the readings by comparing them to the electronic gauge and Unipro results.
