line, insurance, and fleet management expenses). A member of the commuter group volunteers to drive the van, collect monthly rider fares, and keep the vehicle properly serviced. In exchange, the driver may ride for free. Riders receive a comfortable and reliable ride to work at an affordable cost.
The overall vanpool cost includes a monthly service cost and the fuel costs. The service cost includes the vehicle cost, insurance, maintenance, and fleet management expenses. Tennessee Vans will send a monthly invoice to the vanpool driver for the service costs. The fuel cost is collected from the vanpool riders. The overall vanpool costs will vary depending on the round trip miles traveled by the vanpool group.
For example, the monthly service cost for a 15-passenger vanpool traveling 70 miles round trip each day is estimated to be $560.00. The fuel cost (based on $3.00 per gallon) is estimated to be $440.00. The total monthly vanpool costs (service cost plus fuel cost) would be $1000.00. To calculate a monthly fare per rider, divide the total monthly cost by the number of vanpool riders. For 12 riders, the individual fare would be approximately $84.00 per rider. The vanpool driver will collect the rider fares from the riders at the beginning of each month to pay the service cost invoice and to purchase fuel throughout the month.
