Wireless Tips

Your new Hawaiian Telcom wireless modem will help you better utilize your High Speed Internet Service. In most situations, you will now be able to utilize HSI anywhere in your home. Here are some tips that will enable you to optimally utilize wireless (Wi Fi) in your home:

• The wireless port on the Motorola 2247 and the Westell 7500 modems will be secure by default. The wireless network name (SSID) and password (WEP key) will be on a label on the bottom of the modem. The Westell 327W modem is unsecured by default and the default wireless network name (SSID) is serial number found on the bottom of the modem.

• Wireless modems utilize frequencies that are utilized by other devices that may be in your home such as: cordless phones, garage door openers, or microwave ovens. Place your wireless modem away from these devices to minimize interference to your service.

• For optimal performance, your wireless modem should be located on a bookshelf or other elevated location. Do not locate your modem on the floor.

• During set-up of your wireless network, make sure that you create a unique SSID for your wireless network. Make sure that you connect your laptop to the SSID of your wireless modem and not your neighbor’s when connecting to your wireless network.

• Hawaiian Telcom cannot guarantee the performance of wireless networks since many factors are involved. If you are not experiencing a satisfactory speed while utilizing your wireless network, use an Ethernet cable to connect to one of the yellow Ethernet ports on the back of your wireless modem for the best possible speed.

• By not securing your wireless network, you are inviting unauthorized use of your network by strangers which could affect your own internet experience. Even worse, strangers may try to hack your PC’s and steal information from your PCs or monitor your internet usage. You may use this document to enable or change your wireless security settings on your modem.

Terminology

Hawaiian Telecom wireless modems comply with IEEE 802.11 b&g which is an international standard for wireless LAN devices.

Hawaiian Telecom wireless modems utilize 2.5 GHz (GigaHertz) frequency. This frequency is also utilized by cordless phones. If you have a cordless phone and are experiencing problems, there are newer cordless phones which operate at a different frequency.

The SSID (Service Set IDentifier) is the name of your network. When you use the instructions of Windows or Apple to find a wireless network, you should look for the default SSID for your modem or the one that you created with this guide.

For security, your wireless modem supports WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). Utilize the security that is supported by your laptop. Your modem is

provided with a default WPA code.

Your modem has 4 ethernet ports that can support PC’s, printers, or other devices. You can connect multiple wireless devices to your modem but the available speed for each device will decrease as the number of devices increase.

The IP (Internet Protocol) address of your modem is provided in this document for each type of modem.
