On-Set of

Supervisory Relationship:

Supervisors and Supervisees

• Supervisor and supervisee must review, at minimum, the following

documents prior to the supervisee beginning the experience:

1. BACB Experience Standards (Updated 1/13/14) 2. Supervision Contract

Contract Templates

• Supervisor may also create a supervision contract (in compliance with BACB requirements)

(3)

Summary of BACB Experience Standards

• Supervisee cannot start accumulating hours for the BCBA or BCaBA exams until they have begun attending courses required for BACB coursework requirements

• Supervisee must work 10-30 hours per week

• This includes work done for clients outside of the session

• Supervised Independent Fieldwork

• Supervisory period is 2 weeks long (different from practicum)

• Must have a supervision form filled out by at least one BCBA during the 2-week supervisory period

• Total amount of supervision per supervisory period must be at least 5% of total hours spent (across all supervisors)

• BCBA: 1500 hours

• BCaBA: 1000 hours

• Types of hours to accumulate

• Independent Hours

• Direct implementation

• Indirect implementation

• Supervision

• Individual

• Small group

• Supervisee cannot accumulate more than 5 years of experience

- Only for those who began their experience with a supervisor starting 2014 - If a supervisee’s experience with a particular supervisor started before 2014, the “direct implementation” line on the supervisee’s forms will be left blank

Direct vs. Indirect

Direct

• Running programming/targets with client

• Discrete trial training (DTT)

• Natural environment training (NET)

• Incidental teaching

Direct hours can only be accumulated while face-to-face with the client. However, indirect implementation does not mean that the client is not present.

Indirect

• Conducting assessments

• Preference assessment

• Functional assessment

• Staff performance assessment

• Probing for ABLLS, AFLS, VB-MAPP goals/skills

• Designing, implementing, and systematically

monitoring skill-acquisition and behavior reduction programs

• Overseeing the implementation of behavior- analytic programs by others

• Training, designing behavioral systems, and performance management

• Other activities normally performed by a behavior analyst that are directly related to behavior

analysis

• Attending planning meetings regarding the behavior analytic program

• Researching the literature related to the program

• Talking to individuals about the program

• Parents (at end of session)

• Other therapists

• Parent Training Indirect hours that can be

accumulated while face-to- face with the client

Direct vs. Indirect… so what does this mean

for supervisees and supervisors?

• Supervisees – responsible for logging hours

• Number of hours (must be 10-30 per week)

• Type of hours

• Direct

• Indirect

• Supervisors – responsible for signing off on hours

Supervisees Logging Hours

Independent Hours:

Supervisor not present

Individual Supervision:

Hours spent 1-on-1 with or talking to supervisor

Group Supervision:

Meeting with 2-10 supervisees

Total Hours:

Only independent hours will be included as direct or

indirect (supervised hours will not count here)

Besides the supervisee log, where are the

hours recorded?

• BACB Experience Supervision Form

• Filled out per supervisory period

• BACB Experience Verification Form

• Filled out by each supervisor at the end of the experience

(8)

Supervision Forms per Supervisor

Each supervisor must fill out a form for each supervisee

Jenny works with 4 clients. She has 3 supervisors, so she will have 3 sets of

supervision documentation.

1. AB with Tiffany

2. CD with Janelle

3. EF with Kelsey

Supervision Form

(BACB Supervision Form or equivalent can be made by supervisor*)

• Must be filled out at the end of

each supervisory period

• Supervisory period may be different for each supervisee/supervisor

• Filled out at the end because the

total number of hours worked

under the supervision of that

particular supervisor must be

signed off on

• This is the tricky part when a

supervisee is supervised in the

middle of their supervisory period

Q & A

Q: In the case when a person has been in the same experience since

before they were required to keep track of direct implementation of hours,

what does the supervisee do at the end of the experience now that direct

implementation hours need to be reported? Do they do an estimate of

direct hours completed before January 2014, or do they have two Experience

Verification Forms signed (one before January 2014, and one after)?

A: The BACB has decided that those who began their experience prior to

2014, are exempt from the direct implementation requirement and may

leave the space provided on the form blank. Anyone who began their

experience in 2014 must be recording the amount spent in direct

implementation.

Q & A

Q: If a potential applicant will complete the sequence of necessary coursework at the end of this year (e.g., November), and cannot sit for the application until February 2015, will the applicant have to retake classes in order to satisfy the updated coursework requirements which are effective January 2015?

A: If an applicant applies after December 31, 2014 with 3rd edition coursework, they must complete

additional coursework to satisfy the increase in content hours associated with the 4thedition. After December 31, 2014, the BACB will only accept 4th edition coursework.

Q: If an individual applies this year (2014) for an exam next year (2015), the 3rd addition coursework is what they must have completed, correct?

A: Correct. The BACB will only be accepting 3rdedition coursework until December 31, 2014. After this date, those who completed 3rdedition will need to complete additional courses to satisfy the increase in content hours associated with the 4thedition. The BACB is also accepting 4thedition coursework at this time.

Q & A

Q: Does a BCaBA have to complete a total of 1500 required for the BCBA exam, or does the BCaBA only have to complete 500 more hours to be eligible for the BCBA exam?

A: As a BCaBA, you are automatically credited with 1000 hours and only need to submit the remaining 500 hours of experience. If you begin these remaining hours in 2014, you will need to record the amount spent in direct implementation where no more than 50% of your total hours may be spent in direct implementation.

Q: The BCaBA is credited with 1000 hours for passing the exam. If an individual is not a BCaBA, their coursework hours for taking the BCBA exam only count after starting master’s coursework in ABA (in other words, their experience hours that made them eligible for the BCaBA exam will no longer count).

A: Correct, those who are not certified a BCaBA must have completed the coursework at the graduate level in order for the coursework and experience hours to transfer towards the BCBA application.

(17)

Q & A

Q: After the start of 2015, if an individual becomes a BCBA, how long do they have to satisfy the requirement for the mandatory supervision workshop and online module?

A: The online training modules and 8 hour supervision training completed through an ACE provider are requirements that must be completed if a BCBA is wanting to supervise experience hours for applicants. Once a BCBA, you must complete these requirements prior to supervising any experience hours in 2015.

Once certified after 2015, there is no time frame to complete the training modules;

the BACB just requires that supervisors complete the supervision requirements prior to supervising any hours in 2015. So, you are eligible to supervise as soon as you complete the supervision requirements once certified.
