GDR110

(2)

The Model GDR110 brings a new level of compactness, performance and flexibility to the RF tuner community.

In a single 1U rack-mount chassis, this system provides digital tuning capability for 8 RF inputs, with up to 16 digital output streams flowing across Gigabit Ethernet. The system is ideal for automated scanning surveillance systems due to its compact size, wideband outputs, multiple Gigabit Ethernet outputs with jumbo frames, and phase-coherent, time-stamped output streams.

The FPGA-based architecture of the system provides an easy upgrade path for special or custom requirements. The system can be used in both sequenced-DF and N-Channel DF applications, due to its phase-coherent, time-stamped data streams and internal Sequenced-DF antenna control signals.

Features

+ Covers the HF band – 1.5 MHz to 32 MHz or a 70 MHz IF for U/VHF applications

+ Sensitive and high-performance, with signals having 100dB SFDR typ.

+ 8 RF/Antenna inputs and 16 wideband digital downconverter (DDC) streams

+ 1U rack-mount , small SWaP format

+ Options include conformal coating, ruggedized, different clock rates, etc.

Benefits

+ Perfect for both Sequenced-DF and N-channel applications

+ Real-time data distribution is simple, using COTS network switches/routers

+ NO special device drivers are needed! All control/data I/O via network packets

+ Easily expand to dozens or hundreds of channels by adding more units

+ Quick integration into your system, reducing overall program cost and schedule

Applications

+ HF Surveillance systems and Direction-Finding (DF) applications

+ Wideband network-based digitizing of U/VHF signals (w/external RF tuner)

Low Power and UniversaL Power

The system uses about 50 Watts and has a universal AC input power supply.

digitaL tUning

Digital tuner chips have < 1 Hz tuning resolution and user-settable digital phase offsets. Provides 16 total output tuner streams with bandwidths totaling up to 25 MHz per GigE port. (std)

HigH dynamic range

& sensitivity

Outstanding performance 16-bit ADCs provide high dynamic range and sensitivity.

seqUenced-dF sUPPort

User-configurable sequencing logic and long-range RS-485 drivers provide coaxial-switch control for remote or local sequenced-DF applications.

FieLd UPgradeabLe

Internal firmware can be upgraded over the network, allowing field upgrades of new capabilities or features.

time-stamPed data Packets

The output data (I:Q baseband) streams have embedded headers for each data packet with precision timestamps, packet sequence numbers and other information to establish and maintain relative timing in follow-on signal processing.

comPact

The system has a 1U rack-mount chassis.

FreqUency coverage

Covers the HF band from 1.5 to 32 MHz or accepts a 70 MHz IF from an external RF tuner.

PHase-coHerent, n-cHanneL

arcHitectUre

All 8 antenna/RF inputs are phase-coherent and synchronized, providing outstanding results for beamforming, diversity or DF applications.

network ready

Has Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) ports with Jumbo frames for immediate cabling to your system network. The GigE ports are used both for control and for data I/O using simple UDP socket messages. Internal DHCP clients request and get IP addresses for each of the GigE output ports. The ability to send multicast output packets allows easy distribution to multiple network clients.

Make data distribution to thousands of clients fast,

simple, and efficient.

These diagrams illustrate the differences between the GDR110 with multicast, real-time data distribution and a typical RF Tuner.

Diagram 1 shows a typical system that doesn’t use multicast packets, while Diagram 2 shows the efficiency of the GDR110 with its multicast capability.

diagram 1:

Other devices don’t use multicast and therefore can only send data to a few network clients before running out of network bandwidth, which is caused by sending individual streams of packets for every client that needs a copy of the data.

diagram 2:

GDR110 multicast packets sent to Layer-3 network switches/routers get ‘copied’ inside the router, eliminating the drag on bandwidth capacity. This functionality allows for data to be sent to thousands of network clients simultaneously.

no cUstom device drivers saves yoUr Program time & money

For decades, government programs have spent countless time & money developing customized device drivers for hardware to integrate into their systems. Design Lightning’s GDR110 Tuner eliminates all of that by utilizing standard network protocols and readily available Ethernet drivers. By incorporating this efficiency as standard on our equipment, we create a stable environment and alleviate the need for costly programming and debugging.

Integration is a snap for systems built with GDR110s.

reaL-time data distribUtion is imPortant

Signal processing can’t be effective when it can’t get the signals it needs.

Some vendors have proprietary data-distribution hardware. They’ll want you to buy this router-hardware, or that distribution box, or these extra interfaces. What’s needed is a way to use the COTS network gear that you already have to distribute your real-time data efficiently and easily.

The GDR110 has this capability, by outputting data in real-time udp packets formatted with timestamps, sequence numbers and other features to allow seamless and easy access to your signals. And it also outputs data in multicast packets.

Ordering Information

GDR110 Digital Tuners are available in a

variety of configurations.

A dash and an identifier following the basic part number of ‘GDR110’ specify each unique configuration. Units are available in standard and ruggedized versions, specified by their unique part numbers as shown in the table below.

rUggedized systems

(modeLs -xxr as sHown)

The ruggedized systems have special features added for high-humidity and high-vibration environments. Ruggedizing includes conformal coating on the internal circuit boards, Loctite on all internal screws, and locking-putty on internal SMA connectors. These steps help enhance the unit’s already-excellent system reliability when deployed in tough environments.

Selecting the right model for your application requires finding a balance between output bandwidth, ADC clock rate and decimation, to match the characteristics of the signals you’re trying to capture. Please call or email us to discuss the particulars of your project and we will help you determine the proper unit to specify.

We can also produce custom units with configurations to handle your unique specs and will assign a new dash-number for those units. Additional specs not listed above such as custom digital output filters, or input RF filters, or more/less output streams can be accommodated.

If you’d like a custom system, please call or email us. We’ll be happy to review your specs and propose a suitable solution.
