We went up Penang Hill during the holidays. At the foot of the hill

is the Penang Hill Railway, one of the world’s old funicular systems. It was

built in 1897 but commissioned only on 1923. The funicular system was

replaced in 2012 and we go up in the new, air-conditioned coaches. The

ride only taking 9 minutes. On the way up, we enjoyed the lush greenery

and saw some Macaque monkey. On the summit, about 750 meters

below sea level, we had a spectacular view of the island below and the

surrounding sea. Then, us went to the food court and enjoyed some

snacks. It was cool up there and an air was fresh. Fortunately, we had our

jackets. The souvenir stalls was interesting but a bit expensive so we did

not buy anything. We enjoyed walked among the high trees and exploring the nature trails. It was wonderfully day on the hill. We finally

had an early dinner there and then took the train down. We hope to go up

Penang Hill again.

Road accidents occur daily. What is alarming is that the rate of road accidents

in our country is rather high. It is imperative that awareness campaigns is

carried out, especially in schools. The setting out of road safety clubs in

school is a step for the right direction. The Ministry of Education may

even step in by making road safety part of the school’s curriculum and at

least a compulsory co-curricular activities. Local traffic police can conduct

talks on road safety most regularly in schools. In addition, traffic games for

schoolchildren should be revived as this can teach the young participants road

courtesy and the importance of not breaking traffic roles. Poster competitions

on road safety should also be held at all level. The mass media especially

television and newspapers have an important role to carry to help curb road

accidents. Last but not least, the relevant authorities should come up hard

on those who break traffic rules. Hefty fines or even the suspension of their

driving license should be imposed.

Hello, everyone. Welcome back to The Wonders of Mother Nature again.

Today, we are going to visit one of the older jungles in the world to learn

more about exotic plants. Do you know that there are plants that must kill

an eat insects? Sound strange, does it? The pitcher plant is one of these

plants that traps insect for food. This plant can be found in our National

Park in Pahang. This plant looks like the pitcher or jug. It even has a lid to

keep from the rain. A sweet, sticky substance cover the mouth of the

pitcher. This substance attracts insects to the pitcher. If the insect want to

get more of the sweet substance, it will crawl deeper into the

pitcher when

nectar is found on the bottom. The inner wall of the pitcher is covered

with fine hairs who points downwards. This prevents the insect from

crawling out of the pitcher. Eventually, it can die inside it. Then, the plant

will digest the dead insect and absorb it as food. Well, listeners, that is all

we have for now. Make sure you tune in next time for more interesting

facts about nature. Have a great weekend ahead. We will be back with

You at the same time, next Monday.

She is a marine creature with the head and upper body of a beautiful young maiden and the low body of a fish. She can be found in seas

and lakes, or lying on a rock combing her hairs with one hand while holding a mirror on the other. This is how a mermaid is typically

viewed. According to myth, mermaids lure sailors by them singing

and with their lovely musical. They sometimes foretell the future.

They live in a kingdom at the bottom of the sea, which they keep

their prisoners. From this story, fear of being catch by mermaids grew

among sailors. Their believed that seeing one would cause bad luck.

It could signal death in drowning. The belief in mermaids is not

limited to a few countries. There are tale from all over the world.

Most of the tales were told by sailors which had ‘seen’ mermaids on

their long journeys.

I love hang-gliding, and for me, it is a sport which offer complete freedom. Hang gliders were easy to assemble and carry, as they have no motor. Basically, they consist for a metal frame, sail cloth and wire. It is amazing to think that such the simple apparatus can lift off the ground and stayed in the air by using air currents, as birds do. By learning to the right or left which I am in the air, I can change direction. The scenery below me is spectacularly, whether I am glided over beaches or mountains, rivers or fields. Sometimes my flight last for a few hours, sometimes for a few minutes. It is not easy to learn to fly a hang-glider as they requires a lot of discipline, energy and

Residents had to quickly evacuate our homes and move to higher ground. Some managed to salvage their belongings but important documents. Luckily, no lives were lost in the flood. When interview at 10.00 p.m., a resident, Mr Chong Tat Meng said that was the first time the houses has been so badly affected by the flood. According to her, the village was flooded slightly two years ago. This time though the flood was worse. The flood waters have rise to a metre deep. It is quite common for the houses to Kampung Cempaka to be flooded after a heavy downpour. Thus is because the houses are located in the low-lying area. The residents which are mainly illegal squatters have been urged to shift to a new area about ten kilometres away. However, they prefer to stay on in Kampung Cempaka, fearing that their livelihood will be affected if they relocated to another area.

enjoys the Kaamatan Festival. There was several activities held during the two- day celebration. Apart from the highlight for the festival, which was the crown of the harvest queen, there were traditional games too. Arm wrestling, tug-of-war, giant sandals competition but buffalo catching were organised. I especially enjoys watching the buffalo catching competition. Here, contestants had to swing a rope across a buffalo’s head in order to catch them. In case you are wondering, the organisers uses a fake buffalo for the competition. Even though it was not a real buffalo, it was a challenge to more. I was caught up in the excitement of cheering to the contestant that by the end of the competition, I was hoarse. a) ____________ b) ____________ c) ____________ d) ____________ e) ____________ f) ____________ g) ____________ h) ____________ i) ____________ j) ____________

When would you do if you won a million ringgit? Well, this is a common question we are asked from time to time, but have not really given it serious thought. I guess when it really happens, we will have lots of ‘friends’ hanging around for handouts, and receive calls and e-mails from people asking for money for some problems or another.

If i had a million ringgit, I would first bur a house for my parents and give them some money so that they can use it for whatever they want. Then, I would give some to charity. Close to my heart are animals and children, so I would donate a generous amount to animal shelters and another portion to charities for abused children. I would also like to give some to my siblings and good friends who have been such an important part of my life. I would like to travel so I will plan some holiday trips with my family.

I do not want a car or expensive things for myself. I will save a

reasonable portion for my future, especially my education. The difficult part will be deciding the actual amounts. I will have to get a financial expert to help me

MR. NOBODY

I know a funny little man,

As quite as a mouse,

Who does the mischief that is done In everybody’s house!

There’s no one ever sees his face, And yet we all agree

That every plate we brake was cracked By Mr. Nobody.

‘Tis he who always tears our books, Who leaves the door ajar,

He pulls the buttons from our shirts, And scatters pins afar,

That squeaking door will always squeak, For, prithee, don’t you see,

We leave the oiling to be done By Mr. Nobody.

He puts damp wood upon the fire,

That kettles cannot boil,

His are the feet that bring in mud, And all the carpets soil.

The papers always are mislaid Who had them last but he?

There’s no one tosses them about, But Mr. Nobody.

The finger marks upon the door By none of us are made;

We never leave the blinds unclosed, To let the curtains fade;

The ink we never spill; the boots That lying round you see

Are not our boots – they all belong To Mr. Nobody.

The River

The river’s a wanderer,

A nomad, a tramp, He doesn't choose any one

place

To set up his camp. The river’s a winder, Through valley and hill He twists and he turns,

He just cannot be still. The river’s a hoarder, And he buries down deep

Those little treasures That he wants to keep.

The river’s a baby, He gurgles and hums,

And sounds like he’s happily Sucking his thumbs.

The river’s a singer, As he dances along, The countryside echoes

The notes of his song. The river’s a monster, Hungry and vexed, He’s gobbled up trees And he’ll swallow you next.
