RELATIONS TO PREVIOUS PROGRAM
The programme in Operations and Supply Chain Analytics replaces our previous programme in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
The core concept of the new programme is still operations and SCM, but modified to accommodate the recent supply chain challenges and trends:
• supply chains will have to manage, analyze, and secure the massive amounts of data they receive from suppliers and customers worldwide by going digital.
• the right combination of technology, data, and processes can help overcome supply chain challenges.
WHAT IS O&SCM?
Operations and Supply Chain Management (O&SCM) is about planning and
controlling the activities of a company in order to secure that the right product is delivered
• in the right quantities,
• in the right condition, and
• to the right customer,
• at the right time, and
• at the right price!
WHAT IS ANALYTICS?
Analytics refers to the scientific process of transforming data into insights for making better decisions in businesses (Definition of INFORMS.org).
Analytic tools to handle the O&SCM problems:
• Big data management: Storing, integrating, analyzing, updating, and using huge amounts of data in real time.
• Decision making: Framing a decision problem and choosing the best option.
• Optimization: Math methods to find the best solution to a particular type of problem to meet desired criteria.
• Computer simulations: Show how systems perform under different conditions and allow users to test various ways to model a system or possible approaches to a problem.
• ……
OPERATIONS AND SUPPLY CHAIN ANALYTICS
The programme focuses on the management of O&SCs and emphasizes quantitative and analytical skills as found in, e.g.:
• Production planning and scheduling
• Inventory control
• Supply chain design and management
• Transportation planning
• Business process modeling and improvement
• Sourcing and procurement
• Sales and operations planning

O&SC IMPROVEMENTS DRIVE BUSINESS GROWTH
Simon Robinson, Head of Supply Chain in CCA PNG, with support from the Indonesian team and local suppliers, has transformed the Supply Chain and returned the company to a double digit growth.
“In summary what we learnt is that
frameworks like operational excellence can drive total business performance,” says
Robinson.
As for the future, the company is planning its next phase of supply chain improvements and investments to ensure its supply matches the voracious demand in the region.
BUSINESS PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT DRIVER
The shipping containers made the world smaller and the world economy bigger!
One of the most obvious routes to improve business performance is to excel in operations and SC,
especially in the economic downturn!

• Focus on real solutions - we don’t want quantitative models to be used only for the sake of an intellectual exercise.
• Focus on the ability to explore the big picture – we want students to be able to capture the valuable important insights they will need in their future career, rather than being bogged down with details and equations.
