Report on IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing South Italy Chapter (IEEE Italy Section) activities for 2007
The Chapter has been formally appointed 25 April 2003. The Subgroup ID Number for the Chapter is CH08380.
The executive committee is: Maurizio Migliaccio (University of Napoli Parthenope) as Chairman; Antonio Iodice (University of Napoli Federico II) as vice-Chairman, Giovanni Nico (CNR-IAC Bari) as Secretary, Alma Nicoletta Blonda (CNR-ISSIA Bari) as Treasurer.
The term will end in 2009.
The IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing South Italy Chapter established at Laboratorio di telerilevamento ambientale – University of Napoli Parthenope has the main objective to promote activities within the italian southern regions: Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia.
The new reference address is at Università di Napoli Parthenope, Centro Direzionale, isola C4, 80143 Napoli, Italy.
The Chairman took part in all IEEE Italy Section executive meetings (Chairman Benito Palumbo) and is Delegate for GOLD Activities in Italy.
All members have been continuosly informed by e-mail of all Chapter activities. Since its formation the Chapter has organized events not only in Napoli (where the Chapter is established) but also in other Italian regions.
Continuous activity to enlarge participation to IEEE GRS is conducted.
The Chapter has been awarded as the best GRS Chapter of the year and the Chairman received the Award certificate at IGARSS’07 Banquet in Barcelona, Spain.
Jointly with the award the Chapter has illustrated his activity in a paper published on the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Newsletter.
In 2007, the main event organized by the Chapter is the International Workshop on Advanced Ground Penetrating Radar, IWAGPR’07, held in Napoli from 27 to 29 june 2007 and organized by colleagues belonging to the CNR-IREA.
The 4th International Workshop on Advanced Ground Penetrating Radar, IWAGPR 2007, organized by the IREA-CNR in Napoli, Italy, during June 27-29, 2007. IWAGPR 2007 is the continuation of the biennial series of international symposia organized by Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) since 2001 and devoted to the development and applications of GPR systems and techniques. Notably, this has been the first time that the workshop has been held in a venue out of Delft.
The workshop has been attended by 100 participants from more than 20 countries worldwide and sponsored by five international companies through an exhibition. The workshop proceedings (on CD and paper) have been made available through the IEEE
Xplore library and contain 58 contributed papers and three keynote invited contributes. In particular, a specific attention has been given to innovative systems, electromagnetic modelling and reconstruction/imaging algorithms, as well as to the challenging topic of Martian subsurface exploration, included for the first time in the Workshop themes.
Information on IWAGPR and related activities continues to be available through the conference website:

The other main event organized by the Chapter in 2007 was the award ceremony in which the recipient of the best 2006 remote sensing thesis awards have been given. The 5 recipients were (Master Degree) Battista Biggio, Università di Cagliari; Daniela Di Rosa, Università di Bari; Tony Christian Landi, Università di Napoli Parthenope; Matteo Pardini, Università di Pisa and (Bachelor Degree) Michele Martone, Università di Napoli Federico II.
The ceremony was held in the Council room of the University of Napoli Parthenope and the introductory welcomes were addressed by the Rector Prof. Gennaro Ferrara and by the IEEE Italy Section Chairman Benito Palumbo. Central keynote was addressed by Rodolfo Guzzi, Earth Observation Chairman at the Italian Space Agency (ASI) who illustrated the CosmoSkyMed mission. The event was reported on local press.
The recipients received a copy of the book “An Introduction to Ocean Remote Sensing“ by Seelye Martin – Cambridge University Press and a copy of the book “Fra atomi e stelle” by Rodolfo Guzzi – Logos. The books were signed by Rodolfo Guzzi. The ceremony was chaired by the Chapter Chairman.
The 2007 best five italian thesis award on remote sensing has been already posted on the Chapter website and disseminated by e-mail.
The Chapter website has been updated and it is available under the web address: http://www.ingegneria.uniparthenope.it/default_ieee.htm Some scientific seminars have been organized and endorsed by the Chapter:
• Giuseppe Ruello, Università di Napoli Federico II, Italy, held a seminar on “Remote sensing for developing countries: SAR techniques to environmental disaster monitoring” at Università di Napoli Parthenope in Napoli, 28 May 2007.
• Karin Hedman, Technische Universität München, Germany, held a seminar entitled “Automatic road extraction from high resolution multi-aspect SAR data” at Università di Napoli Federico II in Napoli, 30 May 2007.

• The 2008 IEEE GOLD (Graduate Of Last Decade) Remote Sensing Conference at ESA-ESRIN, Frascati (Roma), Italy
A dissemination program has been continued to enlarge membership and participation to the Chapter.
Some social events associated to technical activities have been organized and very much appreciated by the participants.
Three Executive Chapter meetings were held.
A continuos action for the elevation to IEEE Senior Member/ IEEE Fellow of valuable individuals has been undertaken even in 2007.
