Pre-announcement & Call for Papers for the NAFEMS NORDIC Seminar:

Simulating Composite

Materials and Structures

2nd – 3rd December 2009, Esbjerg, Denmark

Composite structures or components are increasingly use as primary load carrying structures in nearly all fields of our society, taking advan-tage of the increased structural strength and stiffness to weight ratios, corrosion resistance, or more innovative design capability that compo-sites bring. The nature of the composite used can range from cheap and freely available glass fiber reinforced systems to exotic and specifi-cally tailored carbon, aramid or even metal/matrix systems, with many forms of manufacturing process available.

The design may include thick composite sections with large numbers of plies, there may be regions of significant ply drop off, sandwich con-struction and also bonded joints. In this case the strength prediction may become very difficult and can often only be solved with the incor-poration of advanced experimental tests.

The successful application of FE methods for the design of components and structures which are made of modern materials strongly depends on the ability of the designer to choose the correct lay up, fiber orienta-tion etc. The development of numerical methods and faster computers, better design criteria etc. makes it much more economically efficient than experimental testing although that experimental test in some ex-tent is still needed.

It is anticipated that the increased use of such advanced materials combined with the necessity to calculate the structural integrity more precisely, will result in an increasing amount of advanced FE analysis to simulate failure phenomena using nonlinear analysis, progressive cracking, debonding, delamination, brittle and ductile fracture, etc.

The seminar is intended as a forum for experts in the area of prediction and modelling of complicated composite structures by using FEA. The event is accompanied by an exhibition of engineering software, com-puter systems, and related consultancy services. A comprehensive review of the current state-of-the-art and trends as well as of future challenges will thus be accessible to participants.

Call for Papers

This seminar aims to clarify these critical issues through keynote pres-entations and contributed papers. We invite all engineers concerned by this theme to give a presentation and submit short abstract before 16th October 2009 to [email protected].

About NAFEMS

Engineers rely on computer modelling and simulation methods and tools as vital components of the product development process. As these methods develop at an ever-increasing pace, the need for an independent, international authority on the use of this technology has never been more apparent. NAFEMS is the only worldwide independent association dedicated to this technology. Companies from numerous industries and every part of the globe have invested heavily in engineering technologies such as FEA and CFD.

But -

how do they ensure they get the best return from their investment?

How do they develop and enhance their capabilities?

How do they know they are using the technology in the most effective way?

NAFEMS is uniquely placed to help answer these questions. NAFEMS is a vendor neutral, not-for-profit membership association of more than 900 companies from all over the world. Members range from major corporations through mid-sized organizations, to small-scale engineering consultants.
