Changing. Growing. Together.

The foster care world continues to evolve, and Nexus-Kindred Family Healing continues to evolve with it. Last year, our focus on change put us in better position to help the foster youth of our communities today.

In 2019, Nexus-Kindred maintained its commitment to enhance family engagement and permanency. This was reflected through the implementation of the

Collaborative Problem-Solving model into our agency–allowing greater family voice and increased awareness of the strengths and needs of their child’s care. This past year, we put great emphasis on trauma-informed training and care with both our staff and our foster families. The youth who are referred to Nexus-Kindred have experienced many traumas, rejection, abuse and neglect in their short lives. Supporting these youth is both challenging and rewarding. Our trauma lens recognizes a youth’s history impact, supports the youth’s mental health needs, and encourages risk-taking and healing.

With the need for foster placements on the rise, we reviewed our processes and systems and identified ways we could more quickly meet that need. A new software program was implemented to manage foster parent licensing, which significantly decreased licensing time and allowed us to place youth more quickly.

Our mission to change the course of a child’s life for the better could not fully be recognized without our expert staff, dedicated foster parents, and the support of our generous donors whose contributions make this work possible.

Thank you all for your role in restoring hope and reshaping futures for so many. DR. MICHELLE K. MURRAY

About Nexus-Kindred Family Healing

Nexus-Kindred Family Healing provides foster care, adoption, supervised visitations, and mental health services for children across Minnesota. Our staff work tirelessly to make sure every child is cared for in a safe and secure home—whether they need short-term care while a family is in transition or a permanent place to call their own. We have foster homes in over half of Minnesota’s 87 counties, and staff in 10 regions throughout the state. At Nexus-Kindred, we believe every child is worth it and every family matters. We see that each time we help a child change the course of their life, we create the potential for healthier families, stronger communities, and a better world. Simply put, changing one life changes everything.

Love Knows No Bounds

Nexus-Kindred foster parents Master and Anna Hinkle have been in wheelchairs for most of their lives: Master since he was 3, and Anna since she was 16. Both were the result of vehicle accidents.

Their astonishing journey began by getting licensed by Nexus-Kindred to provide foster care to traumatized youth. In their minds, they were going to start small by fostering one child and seeing how it went. Life, as they know well, doesn’t always go as planned.

Master and Anna learned that a sibling group of three children needed care. They couldn’t imagine breaking them apart, and in August 2018, welcomed the three siblings into their home. Just over a year later in December 2019, the three children officially joined the Hinkle family through adoption.

With the support of extended family, the Hinkles continue to make special memories and help their children conquer important milestones, like learning to ride a bike. Foster parents come in many shapes and forms – it is the heart and the dedication that are the common threads.
