Deadline 20th of the month
Arid Plants Botanic Garden, Sth Australia 2019.
Found in the Healing Garden.
Share your problems of thoughts and pain You
may find out that life has more to gain.
All people are the same within,
The hurts and feelings are what life will bring.
There is happiness along with pain
It stays around after teardrops have washed
away.
Most of you will surely know, that if you talk to
someone Lights of flowers will begin to grow.
Of beautiful colours of the world
Make all humankind in space a blue pearl.
So open your heart to some in need
Don’t be shy or shame, they are just like you and
me.
There will come a day when we will need to talk
to someone so you can breathe.
After this there will be ups and downs,
But look at life...there is love all around.

GINGIN SCOUTS DAWN SERVICE
ANZAC we will remember them
We had a lovely tribute to our ANZACS where the residents of Pieter Place in Sovereign Hill took part in the Dawn Service, social distancing of course.
We had Ben our Gingin scout rising and lowering the flag which he did a fantastic job. We carried on with the service with the utmost respect to our fallen soldiers.
At the end of the service we had the traditional gunfire’s breakfast with bacon and egg burgers, rum and coffee. Thanks to Mark for cooking this for us, BBQ on the back of the trailer and it was all systems go.
Was lovely to see our Fire Brigade man Steve and Ambulance officers Lauren and Barry and Scout leader Jane all attend in full uniform.
Was a lovely service and very memorable indeed, one which will be remembers for a long, long time.

Anzac Day 2020
- The Country Club’s Anzac Day
Service had to be cancelled but thank you to Luke
Ellis for volunteering to do the morning ‘Last Post’
and Reveille at the flagpole. With the flag set at half
mast and a small wreath laid, the community had a
place to show their respect.
Woodridge Social Darts
Another month without darts so not much to report hopefully we will be all back playing in June. Joyce has been quite poorly in and out of hospital twice, but she is like a rubber ball keeps bouncing back. All the best Joyce, wishing you better future good health. Also, Joyce had a birthday but of course it had to be very basic but we still managed to get a cake to her and photo taken.
David also celebrated his Special 85th birthday but due to social distancing no big party, but I also managed to see him to wish him a Happy Birthday from the darts group and take him a cake. We will get together to celebrate when we are able.
All the best David, for many more years to come.
Another Birthday in May was Terry Player - hope it was good Terry.
The Thursday dart ladies met at café verge 13 first time since social distancing but unfortunately the café was closed so some of us headed back to Brenda Douglas’ place for a cuppa and it was nice seeing familiar faces again. Hope next time back at the café it will be open. Like to send a hello to Jane Reed and hope you have coped well in the lock down.
Perhaps we will be back to almost normal next month so till then that is all from me so stay virus free and keep washing those hands

MOORE MEN’S SHED
Back in operation at last, got a nice ‘ring’ about it eh? Hard to believe it is almost June, EOFY and of course time for an AGM, time goes faster when you are older, seems like someone’s ‘wound up a spring’ and the world is turning faster? For us at the Men’s Shed we are completing our New Shed Project, tidying up the “Loose Ends” and getting ready for the Official Opening which will mark our third expansion over the last eight years.
As our Operational Year comes to a close and our AGM is fast approaching we are looking for the services of someone with a Banking/Accountancy/Bookkeeping background to help us with our Treasurer, for most of us are ‘hands on’ mechanical or woodworking people and finances just not our forte.
If there’s anyone out there who could assist us with our Bookkeeping, could you contact me on 0428 495 511, alternately you may know of someone we can follow up on? Appreciate your support.

Crafty Patch
Hello friends; While we have all been isolating, some of our ladies have been busy making lap quilts for the Wheelchair Association and bags for the “Share the Dignity “ drive “In the bag” for November 2020.
We are all looking forward to being able to resume our Tuesday morning craft sessions, when eventually things return to normal.
COVID-19 Community Newsletter (Shire of Gingin)
The Shire has been producing a weekly COVID-19 newsletter for the past six weeks. It contains information that may assist during this pandemic crisis. You can access past editions on our Facebook page, or by requesting them by return email.
Hard copies will be distributed to those who have registered on our Vulnerable Persons Register and an electronic version has been emailed to those who have requested.
Again, my concern is that we are not capturing all of our vulnerable persons and would appreciate you disseminating throughout your local community. If you require a hard copy I can post out or send you however many you need with our Community Rangers.
We are all in this together. Kind regards Cher
TO SUBSCRIBE to either the paper or electronic version please head to the Shire's website - www.gingin.wa.gov.au/ coronavirus-covid-19.aspx. Alternatively contact the Communications & Marketing Officer on (08) 9575 5150 to provide your relevant details directly.
As another month of Covid-19 restrictions passes, we are pleased to report that our Takeaway Meals on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings have proved very popular! Changing specials each week and generous support of some members have seen us able to offer some free meals to some of our local community stalwarts and those who may be struggling in these difficult times. A big thank you to our members. We look forward to being open again when restrictions allow. The Golf Club is back in action albeit without proper flags or scrapers; the tennis courts are open but for single competition only; the Bowling Green is open but for members only and no hire bowls.
Our gorgeous Mother’s Day raffle was won by a new member, Shannon, and we will be running monthly raffles at the takeaway counter.
With the removal of the Regional Boundaries, we expect busier times & will be happy to welcome our country and city visitors back into town.
You will find the latest menu & specials on Facebook, Instagram and our website.

WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make my favourite cake for me, and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life.
When you thought I wasn't looking I heard you say a prayer, and I knew that there is a God I could always talk to, and I learned to trust in Him.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I
learned that we all have to help take care of each other. When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have to take care of what we are given.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn't feel good, and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw tears come from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's all right to cry.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw that you cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be.. When you thought I wasn't looking I learned most of life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and productive person when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn't looking I looked at you and wanted to say,’ Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking.'

friend) influences the life of a child.

However, saying that we do have a ‘guard bear’ on duty. Streaky aka ‘The Gambler” is keeping a keen eye out on the happenings in the surrounding area. So if you are down that way and see Streaky looking out of the window give him a little wave of acknowledgement as we don’t know how long he will need to be at his post.

SOVEREIGN HILL GARDEN CLUB
You can never keep a good gardener down for too long. Put a large obstacle in our way we will soon plant something on it, in it or under it and make the best of it. So in true Gardening fashion, we found a way to hold our meetings in April and May. We all joined up electronically via Zoom and discussed what we were doing and what was growing in our gardens.
It was truly amazing how much work is being done in the gardens around the area. It ranges from weeding and raking to more ambitious projects of concrete pavers, raised vegetable gardens and redesigning reticulation systems.
It was great to catch up with members and hear what was happening in other peoples gardens. Hopefully, next month will be back to normal. If you would like to join us, contact Wendy on 0429938232 for more information.

WHY?
Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'?
BECAUSE
Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer 'in the limelight' was the Centre of attention.
It has been really great catching up with the ladies in our small group. Given that at present there are less than 10 of us we have been able to meet at private houses maintaining the correct distancing of course and from 25th
May back at Sovereign House as usual on Mondays (including Public Holidays) from 9.30 til noon.
We were of course disappointed that we could not host the Biggest Morning Tea this year, but we are planning for 17th
April 2021 already. We have a few recipes for our cook-book please send your favourite to either Dianne or Wendy ([email protected]). Most of us have recipes handed down by mothers, grandmothers, etc, mostly handwritten in a tattered (well, mine is) notebook. Please just take a photo with your phone and send to us, by text message is fine too. We are happy to type them up, and no doubt we will try a few recipes. We have been tossing up names for our cookbook, love to hear your suggestions for it.
Call Dianne on 0414-469-297 or Wendy on 0429-938-232 for any details regarding our craft group. Our Facebook Page is ‘Sovereign Hill Craft Group” and best email is [email protected]. Dianne and Wendy Coordinators
We would like to send our condolences to Carolee Peace and the Guilderton Bush Fire Brigade at the passing of Grahame Rivers their first lieutenant. Grahame served both at Woodridge and Guilderton Fire Brigades for many years, he will be sadly missed.
The Brigade had six callouts in the month ranging from bushfires to power pole fires this was due to dry conditions and burn offs that had been left unattended and had got away. This was elsewhere in the Shire. We should be in open burning season shortly and we ask that care be taken and any fires lit by residents are not left unattended.

Red Hat Ladies
Over the past few weeks our Red Hatters have been keeping in touch via Zoom meetings, and then with coffee morning at private houses when the required distancing, etc could be maintained. Our first ‘face-to-face’ outing was at Two Rocks for lunch on 20th May, we met up with
some of our ladies from ‘Across the Border’ and enjoyed a lovely lunch accompanied by live Music - what a treat. We are back to meeting fortnightly which is delightful, 7-8 weeks of catching up to get done!
This is the poem ‘Warning’ by Jenny Joseph which has become the ‘Anthem’ for Red Hatting
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat, which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain And pick flowers in other people’s gardens And learn to Spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat And eat three pounds of sausages at a go Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry And pay our rent and not swear in the street And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends for dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.
Email address is [email protected] or call or message Dianne on 9577-1430 or 0414-469-297 if you would like to know more about Red Hatters, ladies of ALL ages welcome.

Things to do in the garden for June
Veges for planting in June: Beans*, Beetroot*, Broad Beans, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots*, Cauliflower, Cucumber*, Celery, Chive, Garlic*, Kale, Kohl Rabi, Leek, Lettuce*, Onions, Spring Onions, Parsnips, Peas*, Potatoes, Radish*, Silver beet, Spinach, Swede, and finally, Turnips (* Plant direct in the bed, plant others in containers for transplanting later). Planting a few seeds each week or fortnight will spread the crop harvesting time. The season’s crop for Peas, Beans and Onions can all be planted at once. Onions can be stored, and peas and beans crop continuously for weeks, although spreading the planting ensures a longer cropping period. Vegetables that grow fast can be spread over time for their planting. Apply liquid fertiliser to developing vegetables. Plant potatoes, chives and shallots and mound the soil around potatoes already growing to help prevent infestation by the potato moth. Plant rhubarb and asparagus crowns in enriched soil with old manure, super-phosphate, and blood and done. Give older plants a feed of manure and blood and bone. Blood and bone is soluble and will be taken up by the plants sooner and manure slowly breaks down and feeds over time. Plant your April and May seedlings into beds or larger containers.
Jobs to do -
Check the moisture content of your compost bin. Dig out those lawn weeds - I've noticed clover and broadleaf weeds really smothering lawns recently so get on your hand and knees and pull them out. I prefer pulling where I can rather than spraying chemicals. There is a real satisfaction in pulling a weed from a lawn and seeing an instant result versus spraying and waiting to see the results eventually. Plus, once you dig it out the lawn can start growing back straight away. You can smother weeds - the weeds around here will be abundant with the recent rain and continuous sun. Smother them with a thick layer of mulch or pull them out by hand. Don't let them go to seed. For weeds it’s an easy equation - one years seed = seven years weed (or even worse).
Plant deciduous trees, shrubs and climbers - deciduous plants are going dormant as the weather cools, sucking all the energy they have saved in their leaves back into their roots. Use this time to plant bare rooted fruit and deciduous plants in time for a Spring growth spurt. Remember to prepare the ground where they are going to give them the best chance of surviving and flourishing in the coming months.
Prune roses in late June/early July. Perth's sunny weather results in roses often flowering all year round. Take the opportunity of the colder weather to begin the roses’ yearly heavy prune and remember to feed them after with a good slow release fertiliser. Don't stress if you do not get around to it in late June, July is fine too.
Spray those fruit trees. Control fungal disease, mites, scale and aphids. Spray peaches for leaf curl and your apples and pears may be affected by codling and light brown apple moth. Spray fruit trees with Bordeaux mixture or copper oxychloride, and at the end of July, with dormant oil. Check citrus and other fruit trees, palms, ferns, orchids, roses and eucalypts for scale insects. The presence of sooty mould or ants on the plants can be a clue that scale is nearby. Use an old toothbrush to gently brush the scale off with diluted white oil, but spray heavy infestation with white oil, and cut off and burn badly damaged stems and leaves.
Happy gardening :-) Nathan
Recent Bushfires...a positive outcome for Seabird.
Even horror stories for some may eventually have a positive outcome somewhere...
Seabird residents on the eastern side of the township are delighted that fire breaks (aka hazard reduction strategies) have been made around the Water Supply Tank precinct, Communications Tower and all along the boundary road Harolds Way) with the Bush.
Many thanks to those responsible and salutations to all our State Emergency Workers.
Now an emergency escape route suitable for all types of vehicles including gophers and wheelchairs still remains on my Wishlist.

MOORE RIVER WEIGHT
WATCHERS
Well we are back!! On June 3rd, unless anything
unforeseen happens, we plan to start back at Weight Watchers, same place, same time.
We will still be adhering to the covid-19 stage 2 plan. As we have 14 members and not all attend every week we will be able to practice social distancing and will certainly have plenty of sanitizer available.
Our main committee are having a meeting to work out everything we can do to keep our members safe.
Over the last 2 months some members have still been sending their weights into me so I can record them on their card. This has kept us in touch but I know we are all looking forward to getting back together again. We welcome any new members who would like to join our group, no obligation, just pop in, have a cuppa and see if it is something you would like to do each week. We must continue to do all we can to keep this virus at bay so we can get back to some normality.

Moore Clothes has reopened and we are accepting donations again (the blue bin is back on the verandah). We are in the process of unpacking winter clothes so come in and look through our range.
If you would just like a tea or coffee and chat we can do that too. We have really missed our catch up with the locals.
In these changing times, we will need to follow some strict COVID-19 guidelines when entering our premises but these will be explained to you on arrival. Stay safe everyone and hope to see you soon.

In May the lower coastal computer group had its normal meeting using two sessions of Zoom. It worked pretty well by muting all participants and then sharing the screen from one computer and conducting a lesson as normal. That computer had wifi obviously, so we had a lesson on Facebook. Poor Jenny got left out of the invite to the second lesson (Huge apologies) and she is our Facebook expert so that didn't go so well!
We are hoping that the Woodridge hall will be open to small groups in June but as at time of writing the Shire has not given us their blessing. If that is the case we will continue to use zoom every Thursday evening for our weekly glass of wine and catch up which has been a real laugh.

"Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens, your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the ocean depths. You care for people and animals alike, O Lord. How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings." Psalm 36:5-7 New Living Bible. The Lord says, "I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honour them. I will reward them with a long life, and give them my salvation." Psalm 91:14-16 New Living Bible
