SECTION C [20 marks]

[Time suggested: 20 minutes] Question 4

Read the following passage.

Jocelyn spent all day playing happily with her friends outside her apartment as her mom, Jaimee, kept her eye from a window.

At about 4 p.m., Jocelyn walked around the corner of the building to get her bicycle and

disappeared. The frantic mother called out to her daughter as she searched the building. She knew something was wrong when she saw that Jocelyn‟s bike was still there. Jaimee called 911.

Police officers blocked the streets and searched the suburban neighbourhood and handed out a photo of the blonde girl – Jocelyn. Kino, 15, was with some friends moving a couch into the apartment of his elderly neighbour when a police officer approached him and asked if he‟d seen Jocelyn. A little bit later, Kino walked over to Jocelyn‟s apartment to check out the situation. “I felt that I was going to find her,” he said and cycled his BMX. He searched without a plan, simply keeping a sharp eye out as he cycled past the wealthy neighbourhood. Suddenly a maroon Chevy passed by him. He made eye contact with the man behind the wheel, and saw a tiny blonde girl in the passenger seat. Kino instantly knew it “was her”. He trailed the car but the driver kept moving, slowly. Finally, the driver pulled the car to the side of the road a few hundred metres ahead of him and pushed open the passenger-side door. Jocelyn slipped out of the car, and ran into Kino‟s arms. The kidnapper sped away.

Chief of the Police Department complimented Kino for his bravery.
