 Facing heavy competition, telecommunication carriers try to seek the method of low costs

and high flexibility, well use the expansible standard platform and transfer to the new-generation network environment, to integrate services.

 The traditional Mini Computer networking is not flexible.

 In the beginning, users of new services are few. The small capacity solution is required to

reduce the one-time investment. Afterwards when the traffic increases, it is convenient for the capacity expansion.

 Telecommunication carriers need standardized, modular and flexible networking

telecommunication equipment as well as more flexible solutions.

 Advanced telecom computing architecture (ATCA) is developed from the next generation

mainstream industrial computing technology -- CompactPCI standard, which is widely applied in telecom, astronautics, industrial control, medical appliance, intelligent traffic, and military facility. The ATCA provides a modularized, compatible, scalable, and excellent price-performance-ratio hardware architecture for the next generation integrated telecom and data network application.

 Basic features:

 Dual -48VDC redundancy power supply  High-speed differential signal connector  8U x 280mm blade size;

 1.2 inches spaces between every two blades, convenient for heat dissipation design  High-speed hot swap daughter card

 Standard Intelligent Platform Management Bus(IPMB), every component in the

system is manageable

 Open Software Architecture

(13)

 A pure ATCA system defined in PICMG 3.X only includes Frame, Computing Board and

Switch Board. So each vendor of ATCA has to provide a complete solution which includes all of the other management modules as mentioned in above diagram.

 Huawei ATAE is one of such commercial system, which is based on ATCA and provides a

powerful environment for telecom system.

 ATAE solution is consisted of two parts: hardware and software.  The hardware platform contains:

 Shelf: Frame + Computing Board + Switch Board + Management Board  Network Devices

 Storage Devices  Rack (Cabinet)

 The software part is USM, and USM is consisted of 3 parts: USMAS, DMS and IPA,

that means:

 USM = USMAS + DMS + IPA

 Furthermore, the whole platform can be managed by Huawei NMS: I2000.

 According to the power entry type:

 AC Rack: If the entry power is DC, then it’s called DC rack.  DC Rack: If the entry power is AC, then it’s called AC rack.  According to the devices installed:

 Basic Rack

 Shelf, USM、storage, minicomputer, LAN switch.

 The necessary configuration of ATAE,small office can configure one basic

rack only.

 Extended Rack  2 shelves.  Storage Rack

 Hard disk array.  Network Rack

 Network equipments, such as LAN switch、firewall、load balancer.

 This is just an example, actual deployment may be different.  Below is the introduction of these devices:

 Shelf: ATAE solution core hardware.  N240: Minicomputer.

 CX300/SUN3510/S3100: Storage.  5624: LAN switch.

(19)

 The difference between AC rack and DC rack is:

 Because the Shelf can accept -48V DC power only, so the AC rack need a AC/DC

power converter.

 According to the real configuration on-site, the ATAE solution is 80% the consumption of

the servers. As the consumption is reduced, the air-condition consumption will be reduced too. The proportion between system consumption and air-condition is 1:3(that means 1W system consumption need 3W heat dissipation consumption). A full configured ATAE can save 60000W air-condition consumption every hour compared with the servers.

 Advantage hot simulation analysis

 Guarantee that the system can run normally under the extreme situation  Local Enforced Cooling Design

 Pump air from bottom to top and from front to back; Guarantee the system

dissipating heat equably

 Intelligent Cooling Technology

 The cooling system can adjust the fan speed according to the internal temperature  Fans Redundancy Protect Technology

 The core components of the cooling system -- Fan tray use the double design.

Support the Redundancy Protect.

 In this Architecture, we can see these devices:  Server Boards

 Switch Boards  Storage

 In ATAE architecture, we just need some boards, they are server boards and switch boards.

The size is much more smaller.

 This is the physical device, and you can see all the server boards and switch boards are in

the same frame, and they are connected internally through the backplane which is also responsible for power supply, so you just need connect it to Internet and storage.

 Very simple architecture, highly integrated, easy to understand and maintenance.
