Zend Server 4.0 Beta 2 Release Announcement

Thank you for your participation in the Zend Server 4.0 beta program. Your involvement will help us ensure we best address your needs and deliver even higher quality products.

What’s new in Zend Server 4.0 Beta 2

This beta release of Zend Server introduces multiple bug fixes, improvements and enhancements, the most important ones are listed below:

Updates and Improvements

PHP version updated to 5.2.9 - the full list of changes can be found here:

http://www.php.net/releases/5_2_9.php

CURL libraries were updated to version 7.19.4 - the full list of changes can be found here:

http://curl.haxx.se/changes.html

Zend Framework version was updated to version 1.7.5

Performance improvements to the communication between the GUI and the Apache web server on Linux and Mac

Linux DEB/RPM: The '/ZendServer' directory used for communications between the GUI and the Apache web server was moved to a separate, port-based virtual host. This should resolve most conflicts with non-default Apache configurations.

Linux: A graceful Apache restart option was added to zendctl.sh Windows: the ext/intl extension was added to the common extensions Versions of the ibm_db2 and imagick extensions were updated

Limitations

Upgrading to this version might cause some of the settings (for example GUI password) to be overwritten with default settings. This is due to some modifications to the different configuration management mechanisms, in order to enable better configuration management in the future.

IBM Informix connectivity through PDO_INFORMIX is only possible if the Informix CSDK client libraries are pre-installed on the server. Zend Server does not ship these libraries, and the user is expected to install them before enabling these extensions

At a glance

Zend Server is a complete, enterprise-ready Web application server for running and managing PHP applications that require a high level of reliability, performance and security.

Zend Server 4.0 comes in two editions; Zend Server 4.0 Community Edition (CE) and Zend Server 4.0, which is the commercial edition. Both Zend Server 4.0 and Zend Server CE are built on a common server foundation that delivers:

Full supported and certified distribution of PHP 5.2

Improved application performance using PHP code acceleration and data caching technology Integrated installers that are native to the OS (RPM/DEB/MSI)

Web-based Administration Interface Out-of-the-box database connectivity And more…

When to use Zend Server 4.0 CE

Zend Server CE 4.0 is ideal for developers who need a simple, integrated solution for experimenting with PHP or for building and running non-critical PHP applications.

When to use Zend Server 4.0

Zend Server 4.0 is suitable for companies that need high reliability, software updates, technical support,

monitoring and diagnostics, security and performance for running and managing business-critical PHP applications.

What’s in Zend Server 4.0

Improved Application Performance

Zend Server 4.0 provides multiple technologies for improving your application response times and minimizing resource utilization:

Code acceleration – PHP bytecode caching increases performance with no application changes Full page caching – A URL-based HTML output cache that does not require any application changes Data caching – A set of functions that allow developers to cache data in memory or on disk

Application Monitoring and Diagnostics

Zend Server monitors PHP application execution in production and alerts you to critical issues, such as: Slow PHP script execution

 PHP errors

Errors in specific function calls Excess memory usage Errors in called Java code And more…

Improved Server Reliability

Known Issues

(5)

Issue Number Description

23803 Windows: when upgrading from Zend Server CE to Zend Server, both products appear in the Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs.

23922 Windows: Installation repair utility may stop without warning.

24000 Windows: the Zend Server installer is unable to install MySQL Server when MySQL Workbench is already installed.

Workaround: Either remove MySQL workbench prior to the Zend Server installation or install MySQL Server manually.

General Issues

Issue Number Description

23740 Zend Server does not support SSL communication with Zend Studio when trying to debug an event. 24418 Page Cache: In cases where a rule matches tens of thousands of different URLs, excess directories created
