EGMS Celebrates Kindness

EGMS Staff and Students will spend a few weeks in February celebrating kindness. To do this, we

will be taking part in The Great Kindness Challenge. The Great Kindness Challenge is a specific week

of the school year devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible! EGMS will kick-off our

challenge on February 4th. We will continue the challenge into the following weeks with a spirit week

and the creation of a kindness chain. The kindness chain will be a collection of all students' kind

deeds. A paper chain link will be added onto by students when they complete a kind act or witness an

act of kindness of a peer. Our goal is to wrap the chain around the center of the building. Please

en-courage your students to participate in our spirit days and ask them about how they can add to the

kindness chain!

Electronic Devices Policy

We understand that cell phones, ear

buds and other electronic devices are a part of

today's society. We do, however, discourage

these devices at school if at all possible. If your

child needs to carry a phone, we ask that it be

turned off during school hours and kept secure.

Please be mindful that all

com-munication with your child

dur-ing school hours should be

through the office. These

devic-es can be distracting and risk

being lost, stolen, or broken

here at school. Any electronic

device that creates a distraction to the learning

environment may be confiscated with the

ex-pectation that it will be returned to a parent

rather than the student.

BOX TOPS UPDATE

Our clip totals are down quite a bit from where

they have been in previous years. If clipping Box

Tops just isn’t your thing, we encourage you to

take a look at the new digital Box Tops app that

allows you to easily scan your store receipts and

instantly add to our earnings. The app is free and

very easy to use. Of course, if you are still

collect-ing traditional Box Tops clips at home, we will

con-tinue to accept those as well.

No matter how you do your Box Tops - with clips

or via the new Box Tops digital app - we

appreci-ate your participation and support of this ongoing

fundraising effort for our school. Every clip and

digital submission counts!

THANK YOU!

Band News

Mr. Johnson

DC

BAND NEWS

Concert Performances - Due to limitations on space for both performers and audiences, there will still

be no live performances during the 3rd quarter. This should be a quarter where the 8th graders

per-form at ENHS, the 7th grade and jazz bands combine for a concert, and the 6th graders perper-form for

the always fun Recorder concert. This should have also included participation in the UNO Great

Plains Jazz Festival and Eastern Midland Conference Concert Band Festival… Still, the students

con-tinue to work hard and improve. I just wish we could show you live!!! :-)

As with our Holiday Hits video, we will be putting together video recorded performances to be

distrib-uted through YouTube. Our intent is to have every grade represented once again. Please stay tuned

for several releases in late February and early March. Again, thank you for your continuing support

and patience!! :-)

Instruments going home! - As another reminder, it is very important that students take their

instru-ments home regularly so they can practice. All 6th and 7th grade students have checkoff sheets in

their binders showing every playing assessment for the quarter. All 8th graders have 3 scale studies

plus solo and/or small ensemble music to prepare. Please remind your student to bring their

instru-ment home daily and reserve 10-15 minutes of uninterrupted practicing time each day. This practice

of having their instrument at home will also assist them in the unfortunate circumstances of snow

days or if they become quarantined. Thank you!!!

Zoom for Band - Anytime a student is learning from home instead of at school, students are expected

to attend class through Zoom. The Zoom link for Band can be found in Google Classroom under the

title Remote Learners. This link should be used anytime the student is absent from class and

learn-ing from home, whether it is for full remote status, quarantine, or any other reason.

CHOIR NEWS

Choir News

Mrs. Tina Schwahn

It has been the year of the pivot for music this year! Our kids are so gracious and flexible about all of

the changes and I am so thankful for that and for the support of our families. The safety of our students

comes first, so we continue with our protocols in the classroom of singing with masks, socially

dis-tanced and for only 20-25 minutes of class time. One positive note is that we have learned a lot more

music theory/rhythm and historic/cultural study of music this year due to the changes. Another great

thing that has come out of this is that as a teacher, I feel like I'm getting to know my students even

bet-ter through their work on projects about their favorite styles and genres and class discussions of the

meaning of our texts and many other things! Lemonade out of lemons!

EARLY SPRING PERFORMANCES

We will not be having our normal early spring concerts this year, at least not live and in-person. This

quarter we will be working on polishing the songs we have learned so far and creating some sort of

multi-media production for each that we can send out to you digitally! So, watch your emails for more

information to come on those.

SAVE THE DATE FOR MAY 13, 2021

We do ask that you hold the date for our May concert in your calendar. We are not yet sure what that

performance will be (in-person, live stream or video), but want to make sure you have the date

availa-ble just in case!

SHOW CHOIR

Grand Marquee Show Choir is in the midst of preparing a great show for you! We are hoping to do some

sort of collaboration/sharing event with the other middle school show choirs in Elkhorn. Dates, times

and venue (either digital or in-person) are to be determined. Grand Marquee will also definitely perform

at our May performance.

In the event the Winner does not have an existing Plan account, the parent/guardian will be required to provide all documentation necessary to open a NEST account (including name, address, social security number, date of birth and other identifying information for the designated Winner) before Winner is entitled to a Prize. All potential Winners are subject to eligibility verification by the Sponsors and Program Manager. An Entrant is not a Winner and not entitled to a Prize unless, and until, the Entrant’s eligibility has been verified, an existing Plan account for the Winner has been verified or a new Plan account has been opened and the Entrant has been notified that verification is complete. A Winner, or their legal parent or guardian may need to sign a form acknowledging eligibility and

conformance with the Sweepstakes Official Rules. The Prizes may be awarded to an alternate winner (selected from among remaining eligible entries) if (i) a Winner is not compliant with the Official Rules; (ii) an existing Plan account for the Winner cannot be verified and new Plan account documentation is not returned in good order within 14 days after mailing to Winner; (iii) a Winner is not eligible to open a Plan account; (iv) the Prize notification letter is returned as undeliverable; or (v) three good faith attempts to contact the Winner live by telephone are unsuccessful (no messages will be left). No more than the stated number of Prizes will be made. In the event that production, technical, seeding, programming, or any other reasons cause more than the stated number of Prizes, as set forth in these Official Rules to be available and/or claimed, the Sponsors reserve the right to award only the stated number of Prizes among all legitimate, un-awarded, eligible Sweepstakes claims.

8. Release: Each Entrant, or their legal parent or guardian on their behalf, agrees, except

where prohibited by law, to release and discharge, hold harmless and indemnify Releasees and all others associated with the development and execution of this Sweepstakes, from any and all tax liability that may be imposed or associated with receipt or use of the Prizes, and from and against any and all claims, actions, proceedings, and liability for any damages, expenses, fees, injury, or losses sustained in connection with the Sweepstakes or acceptance, possession, use, misuse or nonuse of a Prize.

9. Publicity: Except where prohibited by law, by entering the Sweepstakes, or by

winning, Entrants, or their legal parents or guardians on their behalf, grant to Sponsors and Program Manager and their respective designees the right to publicize the Entrant’s name, photograph, image, likeness, voice, statements, submission and certain biographical information in all manner and media, worldwide and in perpetuity, for advertising, trade and promotion purposes, worldwide and in perpetuity, in any and all forms of media, now known or hereafter devised (including, without limitation, the Internet), without additional compensation, and without opportunity for review. Parents/guardians may be required to sign a release.

10. Limitations of Liability: By entering the Sweepstakes, Entrants, and their legal

parents and guardians, hereby agree that Releasees are not responsible for technical, computer, mechanical, printing, typographical, human or other errors relating to, or in connection with the Sweepstakes, including, without limitation, errors which may occur in connection with the administration of the Sweepstakes, the processing of entries, the announcement of the Prizes or in any Sweepstakes-related materials; or for stolen, lost, late, misdirected, damaged, incomplete, inaccurate, undelivered, delayed or illegible entries or postage due entries or mail; or for electronic, computer, or telephonic malfunction or error, failure to enter into the processing system, or are processed, reported, or transmitted late or incorrectly, or are lost for any reason, including computer, telephone, paper transfer, or human or other error. If, in Sponsors’ opinion, there is any suspected or actual evidence of tampering with any portion of the Sweepstakes, Sponsors, at their sole discretion, reserve the right to disqualify any individual who tampers with the Sweepstakes, and/or void any entries submitted fraudulently, to modify or suspend the Sweepstakes, or to terminate the Sweepstakes and conduct a random drawing to award the Prizes using all eligible, non- suspect entries received as of the termination date. As a condition of entering the Sweepstakes, Entrants agree that: (i) under no circumstances will Entrants be permitted to obtain awards for, and Entrants hereby waive all rights to claim, punitive, incidental, consequential, or any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses; (ii) all causes of action arising out of or connected with this Sweepstakes or the Prizes awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; and (iii) any and all claims, judgments, and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred and, in no event, shall Entrant be entitled to receive attorneys’ fees or other legal costs. District Reminders

Both the EPS District and individual buildings regularly use a parent messaging system called

SchoolMessenger to send emails and phone calls to parents, including monthly information about

building happenings, as well as school closings. If you did not receive a phone call and an email

regarding our most recent School Cancellation, please reach out to your building secretary.

SchoolMessenger also allows recipients to “unsubscribe” from its mailing list; please understand that

by “unsubscribing” you are completely removing your email address from ALL lists, including both

District and building specific emails. If you have previously unsubscribed and would like to begin

receiving emails again, please let your building secretary know.

Savvy Parent tips are intended to inform and educate parents of technology that may be available to their students. Tips may feature

Tech Savvy Parent Tip: Balancing Technology Use

Parents often look for new ways to create a balance between learning and using technology

appropriately, and participating in other activities that are essential to a child’s development. Finding

that balance between the two can be the difference between a healthy relationship and an unhealthy

reliance. Several strategies exist to ensure that a healthy relationship with technology is built

beginning with the early stages of use.

Understand your pattern of use and create boundaries: Most people don’t realize the amount of time

they spend using technology unless it is pointed out to them. Take an inventory of your family’s use

and understand when, why, and how you’re using technology. Is all of it necessary? Are you and/or

your family benefiting from that time spent with technology? Understanding your pattern of use is the

first step in creating boundaries that both you and your family can stick to.

Be intentional in determining downtime: Being constantly connected can hinder active learning, as

one becomes passive in taking in new information because he or she is constantly “learning” new

things. Taking a step away from technology and the absorption of information allows one’s brain a

needed break and creates an active learning environment. By being intentional in determining

technology downtime, you are giving your brain that break to be able to focus on other things.

Be the example and set the expectation: Kids learn by following an example - following the same
