Product Family Overview
Infinity
F E A T U R E S Today’s buildings demand sophisticated control technologies. Andover Controls’ Infinity addresses these demands in one
fully integrated system that is flexible and incredibly easy to operate, yet powerful enough to substantially reduce energy consumption, increase staff productivity, eliminate duplicate hardware, and adapt to the unique comfort and security requirements of individual building tenants. From high performance network controllers to cost-effective application controllers, the Infinity family of distributed, programmable controllers is the complete direct digital control solution for HVAC, lighting, security, smoke management, and process control needs.
Infinity Features a High-Speed Multi-User Network
Although each individual Infinity controller operates on a stand-alone basis, they communicate and share data globally over a single, high-speed two-tier LAN network. Multiple users can access any Infinity controller simultaneously using a workstation, a lap-top computer, or a touch screen display anywhere on the network, or communicate remotely over standard telephone lines.
And because each Infinity controller operates on a stand-alone basis, maximum reliability is built into the system. Resident intelligence and battery backup in each individual controller assures continued system operation during network interruptions.
Infinity is Easy to Operate, Simple to Program
Andover Controls simplifies information management by making the Infinity system easy for operators to use and understand. For example, with the Infinity SX 8000 workstation, an operator can “tour” a facility, adjusting setpoints, printing reports, tracking personnel, and transmitting information to other users or controllers on the network — all with a click of the mouse on SX 8000’s animated color graphics and pop-up windows!
Similarly, all Infinity controllers are programmed using Andover Controls’ Plain English® programming language. Like its name implies, Plain English is simple to use — even a computer novice can create sophisticated, customized control applications using powerful commands and expressions written in easy-to-comprehend English sentences.
Infinity Brings It All Together
From HVAC and lighting, to access control and CCTV, underground storage tanks to industrial controls—Infinity allows companies to integrate all of a building’s stand-alone systems, even from multiple vendors, and eliminate duplicate wiring and redundant hardware. Not only can third-party systems share information transparently, but also display it on any SX 8000 workstation. And because Andover products support “open systems” protocols such as Internet (TCP/IP), Ethernet, NetBeui™, IPX/SPX, DDE, BACnet®, and LONTalk®, companies can integrate the Infinity SQL database with their existing networks and MIS systems. This integration makes data such as energy usage and building performance, maintenance records, critical alarm information, and time-and-attendance readily available to company personnel.

Infinity Network Architecture
Infinity’s communications architecture is unique — it combines the reliability and functionality
of programmable, distributed stand-alone controllers and graphical operator workstations
with the data integration and communications of a powerful, and cost-effective, two-tier local
area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN).
Plain English
®Programming Language
Infinity distinguishes itself further by its flexibility and ease-of-use. With Andover Controls’
powerful programming language, Plain English, users can program any Infinity controller using
simple English statements such as “START THE PUMP”; “UNLOCK THE MAIN_DOOR”; or.
“OPEN THE MIXING_VALVE”. It is so simple even people without programming experience can
create custom programs that override or enhance their standard HVAC, access, alarm,
schedule, or communications strategies for their unique requirements— without technical
assistance or the inflexibility of “canned” programs!
Plain English programs are entered into Infinity controllers anywhere on the network using an
SX 8000 workstation, LSX 280 Lap-Top service tool, or dumb terminal.
Upper Tier
Ethernet,Infinity’s upper tier backbone bus, provides the system with high-speed communications, utilizing standard Internet protocols. Ethernet supports Andover’s network controllers, including the CX 9200 network controller and the ÈEclipse rack-mounted controller, giving a building’s systems centralized communications, high performance I/O, and expandability. In addition, Ethernet supports up to 64 SX 8000 workstations and a central Windows™ NT file server. All data is shared globally over this high-speed network. SX 8000
Lower Tier
The lower-tier, the Infinet field bus, features RS-485, twisted-pair communications to the Infinity family of distributed application controllers. The Infinet provides complete peer-to-peer communication, transparently sharing data with any controller on the network, including controllers on Infinets connected to other Ethernet network controllers. Each Infinet bus will support up to 127 Infinet controllers, such as the SCX 920 system controller, the TCX 850 terminal controller, the IDX 851 intrusion detection controller, and the LCX 890 lighting controller; along with 31 priority controllers, such as the DCX 250 touch screen display and the ACX 700 or ACX 780 access controller.
Network Expansion
The Infinity system is expandable to meet any building’s growing requirements. Add additional controllers, workstations, and other user interfaces at any time in a variety of combinations to suit the most demanding applications.
System expansion is also made easier with Infinity
expansion modules. These low-cost modules increase the I/O capacity of individual controllers and provide a cost-effective solution to increased point requirements in specific locations.
Ethernet network controllers contain up to four user-programmable RS-232 or RS-485 ports to support communications, printers, or modems, plus connections to Infinet networks and even Andover’s first generation of AC256 controllers. In addition, network controllers can directly interface to third-party devices such as fire alarm panels, HVAC equipment, CCTV switchers, lighting controllers, power monitoring systems, and variable speed drives.
