Faculty of Health Sciences MPH Program Policies and Procedures Subject: Scholarship Policy

1. Background

The need for well-trained public health professionals who are capable of promoting and advocating for the health of populations within the Arab region, has motivated the Faculty of Health Sciences to seek funds to support the education of individuals who would be able, through their work, to impact the health status of populations in the Arab world.

2. Policy

A limited number of partial or full scholarships are awarded every year for applicants from the Arab world interested in the Graduate Public Health Program (GPHP)at the Faculty of Health Sciences. Full scholarships cover tuition and related academic expenses, travel to and from country of residence as well as basic living expenses for non-residents of Lebanon. Partial scholarships provide financial support for a range of financial expenses.

A. Eligibility:

 Applicants can only be considered for scholarship once they are accepted on a regular basis in the GPHP program.

 Scholarships are awarded to applicants for the Fall semester of every academic year. Scholarships are not awarded for mid-year admissions.

 Scholarships are awarded to new students admitted into the GPHP. Currently enrolled GPHP students are not eligible for scholarship.

 Scholarship applicants should be citizens/nationals of the Arab region (Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya Arab Jamahiriya, Mauritania, Morocco, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, or Yemen).

B. Conditions

Conditions for scholarships may be determined by provisions of the funding agencies. Scholarship awardees are not entitled to apply for Graduate Assistantship during the period of their scholarship.

Scholarship awardees are expected to join the program in the beginning of the academic year (fall semester) as full - time students. Part- time students are not eligible for scholarship funding. Scholarship awardees are not entitled to defer their scholarship awards.

Scholarship awardees are expected to complete the program within duration of one year (including summer) for the MPH program and two years for the MS programs.

Scholarships are granted to applicants with the specification of the degree and major/concentration that the awardees should join.

Scholarship awardees who wish to transfer from one MPH concentration to another shall seek the approval of the Scholarship Task Force upon completion of the first semester and before the start of the second semester. Approval of the Scholarship Task Force should be sought before the submission of the transfer request to the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) for final approval.

The continued provision of scholarship funding is contingent upon the student achieving a semester average of 80.

C. Selection criteria:

Scholarship applicants are evaluated and scored based on the criteria below. 1. Commitment to service in public health in the region.

2. Relevance of work experience to public health or related fields 3. Duration of work experience

4. Local need for public health graduates in the country of the applicant

The scholarship applicants are then selected based on the rank of their score. The cut off score and hence the number of scholarships to be awarded are determined based on the availability of funds.

3. Procedure

The Scholarship Task Force oversees the development and execution of the scholarship policies and procedures. Application forms and additional information can be obtained from the GPHP Administrative Coordinator or from FHS website at:

The deadline for submission of scholarship applications is the same as the one adopted by the University for the submission of the regular admission applications for the fall semester of every academic year.

Applicants are advised to include the results of the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPR) with their scholarship application or at least the registration slip to one of those tests. The ELPR scores should be submitted before the scholarship applications are sent to the Scholarship Task Force for review. After that date, only applicants who have submitted their scores will be considered for scholarship.

Scholarship applications will go through the following review process:

a. The Administrative Coordinator relays to the Scholarship Task Force the admission decisions made by the Graduate Studies Committee with regard to scholarship applicants.

b. The Scholarship Task Force members review the scholarship applications and assign a score for each applicant.

 The Human Development Index (as per the table below),

 The assessment of availability of Public Health institutions in the country, and

The assessment of the political stability in the country. c. If deemed necessary, applicants may be called for an interview.

d. The Scholarship Task Force recommendations are raised to the Graduate Studies Committee for approval. The Graduate Studies Committee recommendations are subject to the Dean’s approval.
