1. Provide an equivalent, though different, learning experience to that of the traditional classroom.
The class uses the same textbook and has the same student learning outcomes as traditionally delivered classes. Students will achieve mastery through a variety of publisher-provided and instructor-designed materials.
2. Design assignments that require critical thinking by students.
Students may present lessons to their peers on key topics and will analyze written passages in order to identify both grammar and paragraph/essay composition errors and correct them. In addition, students will compose their own written work.
3. Assess student performance (this includes reasonable measures to ensure the integrity of student work.
Students will be tested online from a database of student questions; thus, each student will receive a different test of comparable difficulty. Testing is not particularly high-stakes in this class; of equal or greater weight is the written work, which will be compared in cases of questionable authorship, with a writing sample students provide at orientation.
4. Use various strategies and technologies to meet student needs and content requirements (i.e., e-mail, US mail, optional face-to-face or Elluminate workshops, Tegrity activities, discussion boards, visual and auditory stimuli v only text). Elluminate may be used for office hours, Tegrity will be used for short instructional videos, and discussion boards will be used for class discussion and answering questions.
5. Require that students interact with the instructor and with each other (2e in SACS document listed above). Elluminate may be used for office hours and email will be used to contact students, ensuring contact with instructor. Students will interact with each other via discussion boards, and group work may be incorporated in addition.

LTech is currently working on incorporating grammar “widgets” into the D2L site to provide interactivity to students each time they log on. In addition, various grammar and writing websites will be provided, along with the NWFSC LRC link.

The decision to offer this course electronically online was based on a need to offer it at a time
which would work best for the target population of students who work on a rotational shift work
schedule.
Students in this course will be required to develop an understanding of building and life safety
codes in relation to types of occupancies, building design, fire resistance of building materials, fire
problems inherent in structures and life safety considerations. Offering this course electronically online
will afford them time to collect plan information and then share it in group discussion/interaction
posting(s).
The program this course is a part of the Emergency Administration and Management program
and was developed using standards set by the International Fire Service Training Association in
accordance with state and local guidelines.
This course was developed for use in a Vocational Certificate Program and an Associate of
Applied Science Program. The course will require students to demonstrate the ability to comprehend
the application of building and life safety code enforcement methods and communicate with the
instructor and fellow students at a level consistent with a two-year degree.
This course is part of a complete and coherent program.
All related instructional materials are appropriate and will be available to students online.

two separate case studies.
Students will be required to submit at least two dropbox assignments in which they provide their
understanding of selected course readings.

Northwest Florida State College incorporates the Desire2Learn online learning platform for
online courses. This platform is widely used among institutions of higher education. The technology is
supported by the Northwest Florida State College Learning Technologies Department, the Northwest
Florida State College Information Technology Division, and the product manufacturer. This product is
updated on a regular basis to meet student and faculty needs.
Interaction in this course will be facilitated primarily through the use of discussion board
postings; therefore, the majority of the interaction will be asynchronous. Chat room sessions will be
scheduled allowing an opportunity for synchronous interaction.

Students will complete online exercises using designated websites and website links. Students will research academic material via internet for class discussions, quizzes and tests.

Students will complete online exercises that demonstrate their ability to understand and use the language by responding to and/or describing scenes and written texts. Experience with natural language will be enhanced by assigned activities using Spanish language websites that will include current news, advertisement, music, and poetry.

Online quizzes will be administered and students will receive immediate feedback. Exams will also be administered in a traditional setting. Class presentations and discussions will take place in a traditional setting and students’ abilities will be assessed by the instructor using traditional grading techniques.
Students’ grades will be calculated as follows: Online work will contribute 50% to their final grade and traditional in class work will contribute 50%.
