Upgrading to a New Software Version
The two supported methods for updating your CDN software are:
• Downloading updated CDN software from the Cisco Connection Online (CCO) software download site, and then performing a manual upgrade to install the downloaded software
• Using the CDM Software Update feature to automatically download and then manually install CDN software updates from the CDN support server
Updating Software from Cisco Connection Online
Updates of the CDN software are available from CCO, the Cisco customer-support portal. After you have downloaded the appropriate software from CCO, use the manual upgrade procedure described in the “Performing a Manual CDN Software Upgrade” section on page 6 to distribute the software update to all your CDN devices.
Installation Notes
Note To access CCO and download your CDN software update, you need a registered username and password for the site. If you are a Cisco customer and service contract owner, a Cisco reseller, Premier Certified Partner, the customer of a Cisco certified Partner Initiated Customer Access (PICA) partner, or a Cisco consultant, you can acquire a CCO login from the Cisco Web site.
You can download the CDN Enterprise software from CCO using either a browser pointed to the CCO Web site or an FTP application connected to the Cisco FTP site. Use the appropriate procedures that follow to connect to CCO.

Step 9 Proceed to the “Performing a Manual CDN Software Upgrade” section on page 6 for instructions on using the upgrade file to upgrade the software on your CDN devices.
Downloading Software from the CCO FTP Server
In addition to downloading software updates for the CDN product from CCO, you can also use your Web browser to download CDN software from Cisco’s designated FTP site, ftp://ftp.cisco.com.
Step 1 Launch your Web browser (either Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 4.x or later, or Netscape Communicator Version 4.x or later).
Step 2 Log in to Cisco’s FTP server as a registered user or as a guest.
• To enter as a registered user, enter your CCO user ID and password in the Location field in the following format:
ftp://userid:[email protected]
• To enter as a guest user, the URL is:
ftp://ftp.cisco.com
You will be prompted to log on. If you were given a special access code by e-mail or through a customer support representative, enter the special access code as a user ID and enter your e-mail address as a password in the format [email protected]. It should appear similar to:
ftp://access_code:[email protected]/coded
Step 3 Browse the directory tree until you locate the directory containing the CDN software upgrade files, for example:
ftp://userid:[email protected]/cisco/internet/CDN/
Note Guest users will only be able to see images that are located under the /pub directory.
Step 4 Download the software update to your local machine in binary format.
If you are prompted to open the file or save it to a disk, choose to save the file to a disk. Locate a directory on your hard drive or LAN to temporarily hold the update file and click OK.
Note You will later import this file to the CDN, so be sure to place it in a location that makes it easy to retrieve for import later.
Installation Notes
Step 5 Proceed to the “Performing a Manual CDN Software Upgrade” section on page 6 for instructions on using the upgrade file to upgrade the software on your CDN devices.
Performing a Manual CDN Software Upgrade
To manually upgrade your CDN, you must:
1. Create a channel called MANUAL_UPGRADE that will distribute the updated software.
2. Subscribe any CEs requiring a software update to the MANUAL_UPGRADE channel.
3. Import the software update to the MANUAL_UPGRADE channel.
4. Distribute the software update to all devices marked for upgrade.
After these steps are complete, you can use the Software Update feature to install the software upgrade files to subscribed devices. Refer to the sections below for more details on completing each step.
Creating a MANUAL_UPGRADE Channel
To create a MANUAL_UPGRADE channel:
Step 1 Launch your Web browser and point it to the CDM.
Step 2 Log on using your administrator logon.
Step 3 From the Channels menu, click Channel Console.
Step 4 Click Add Channel.
Step 5 Click the Edit button next to the channel name Channel #.
Note “Channel #” is the default channel name. If you have added other channels and
have not renamed them, the channel that you added will be named “Channel #” (# being the next incremental number).
Step 6 In the Name field, change the name of the channel to MANUAL_UPGRADE. The channel must use this name (and letter case, as well) in order for it to function as an upgrade channel.
Step 7 In the Size Limit field, enter a value that will accommodate your upgrade files. For example, entering
100 in the field provided and then clicking the MB button sets the size limit of the
MANUAL_UPGRADE channel to 100 MB.
Step 8 Select both the Auto Subscribe and Auto Replicate check boxes.
Installation Notes
Subscribing Devices to the MANUAL_UPGRADE Channel
After you have created your upgrade channel, subscribe all the devices requiring a software update to that channel.
Step 1 From the Channels menu, click Subscriber.
Step 2 From the Channel Selector, choose the MANUAL_UPGRADE channel.
Step 3 In the Unsubscribed CEs column, click All to select all of the unsubscribed devices for subscription to the upgrade channel.

New and Changed Information
New and Changed Information
The following sections detail the new features and feature enhancements included in the Cisco CDN Software Enterprise Solution Version 2.0 release.
New Software Features in CDN Software Enterprise Solution Version 2.0
New Feature for Creation of a Software License Distribution Channel
To facilitate licensing upgrades for the components of the CDN, we have developed a procedure that uses the CDN to make the distribution of license upgrade files seamless and centrally organized. Using a specially designated CDN channel, you can initiate license upgrades for certain CDN components from the CDM to any subscribed CEs.
To use the license distribution feature, you must first do the following:
1. Obtain the license file or files
2. Create a license distribution channel on your CDM.
3. Subscribe any CEs requiring license upgrades to your license distribution channel.
4. Import a license file to your license distribution channel.
5. Replicate the license file to subscribed CEs, automatically initiating the license upgrade process on each CE.
Refer to the sections that follow for instructions on completing each of these steps.
Obtaining License Files
The first step in updating your CDN device licenses is to acquire the license files you need to update your CDN components, for example: RealServer.
Step 1 You may acquire your license files directly from Cisco Systems, or from a third party such as RealNetworks. If you have questions regarding where to acquire the necessary license files, contact your Cisco account representative or refer to the “Obtaining Technical Assistance” section on page 18 for more information.
Depending on the component you are upgrading, license files may be ASCII or binary format. There is no prescribed format that licenses must use for update using the CDN.
Step 2 Once you have acquired your license files, deposit them in a location from which they can easily be imported to your CDM later.
Creating a License Distribution Channel
The next step in updating your licenses is to create a channel through which license files will be distributed.
To create a license distribution channel:
New and Changed Information
The Channel Console dialog box appears.
Step 2 Click Add Channel.
A new channel with the default name “Channel#” is added to the Channel Console list, where # is a sequential number assigned to the channel.
Step 3 Click Edit for the newly created channel. Using the options provided, rename your channel accordingly. For example,
License_Distribution_Channel
Note Unlike the MANUAL_UPGRADE channel, there are no specific requirements for the name of the license distribution channel.
A description for the channel is optional.
Step 4 Verify that the Auto Subscribe and Auto Replicate options are not selected. You may be distributing license files to selected CEs at specified times, so you do not want these features enabled.
Step 5 Activate the license distribution feature by selecting the Is License.
Step 6 Click Save Changes.
After you create your license distribution channel, you are ready to begin updating your CDM and CEs with license files. However, you must first prepare the channel to distribute the license files by completing the following tasks:
• Subscribing Devices to the License Distribution Channel
• Importing the License
• Replicating the License to Devices
Refer to the sections that follow for more information on each of these steps.
Subscribing Devices to the License Distribution Channel
Devices designated to receive new licenses must be subscribed to the license distribution channel. To subscribe devices to your license distribution channel, follow the directions for “Subscribing a Content Engine to a Channel” in Chapter 3 of the Cisco CDN Software Enterprise Solution User Guide.
New and Changed Information
Importing the License
CDN devices have their component licenses updated after having license files replicated to them from a designated license update channel on the CDM. (See the “Creating a License Distribution Channel” section on page 8.) To begin this process, import your license file to a designated license update channel.
To import a file to your license update channel:
Step 1 From the Channels menu, click Media Importer and follow the instructions for importing the license file you received to your license update channel using any of the import options listed (Web Server, FTP, or PC files).
Step 2 From the Channels menu, click Import Progress to monitor the progress of your import. When the import is finished, the import status will be “complete.”
Step 3 After you import the license file to the license update channel, see the “Replicating the License to Devices” section on page 10 to complete the license update process.
Replicating the License to Devices
After you subscribe all devices for which you wish to update software licenses to your license update channel and import the license file to that channel, you are ready to distribute licenses to your CDN devices.
To initiate a software license update for your subscribed CDN devices:
Step 1 From the Channels menu, choose Media Editor. The Media Editor dialog box appears.
Step 2 Make sure that the designated license distribution channel name is displayed in the drop-down list on the left side of the dialog box. If it is not, click to expand the list and select the license distribution channel.
Step 3 Click the thumbnail image for the license file you imported to the channel to edit its properties. Fields displaying the media file properties appear.
Step 4 Select the Replicate check box.
Step 5 Click Save Changes.
Clicking Cancel Changes returns all values to their previous settings when you last clicked Save
Changes.
The selected file is replicated to all CEs subscribed to the license update channel, initiating the license update process.
Note It may take a few minutes for the license file to replicate to the subscribed CEs.
Once replication is complete, you can begin using your CDN devices in accordance with their updated license information.
New and Changed Information
New Feature for Resetting the Admin Account Password
Ordinarily, CDN administrators change the admin account password in the same manner as any other account’s password. See the “Changing a User Password” in Chapter 2 of the Cisco CDN Software
Enterprise Solution User Guide for details on changing passwords for accounts.
However, if you lose track of the password for the admin account and accidentally lock yourself out of the CDM interface, you must manually reset the password for the account before regaining access to the CDM and the Users feature as the default administrator.
Resetting the admin account password restores the factory-configured password to the account. After resetting this password and rebooting the CDM, administrators can again log on using the admin account and configure the password for the account.
Note To reset the password for the admin default administrator account, you must have physical access to the CDM device and be able to interface directly with it. Refer to the instructions for connecting a keyboard and terminal or a PC running terminal emulation software to your CDM in the hardware installation guide that came with your CDM hardware. Use the following procedure to reset your default administrator password:
Step 1 To reset the default administrator password, you will be required to reboot the CDM machine twice. Ask any users currently logged on to the CDM to exit the system for a short while.
Step 2 If your CDM is running on Cisco hardware, use the console cable kit that came with your hardware to connect the console port of your CDM to the COM port of an ASCII terminal or PC running terminal emulation software. Refer to the Cisco Content Engine 500 Series Hardware Installation Guide or the
Cisco Content Networking Hardware Installation Guide for the Seven-Rack Unit Chassis for
information on locating the console port, cable and adapters.
If your CDM is not running on Cisco hardware, follow the instructions for attaching a terminal and keyboard directly to the device in the hardware installation guide or configuration guide that came with your hardware.
Step 3 If you connected a PC directly to your CDM, use your preferred terminal emulation software to connect to the CDM by launching a new session and pointing to the IP address of the CDM.
Step 4 Reboot the CDM machine by powering the machine off, and then on again. If your CDM is running on Cisco hardware, refer to the Cisco Content Engine 500 Series Hardware Installation Guide or the Cisco
Content Networking Hardware Installation Guide for the Seven-Rack Unit Chassis for information on
locating the power button and rebooting your CDM hardware, otherwise refer to the installation or configuration guide that came with the hardware to identify the power button if you are unsure.
Step 5 Wait for the following prompt to appear on your terminal:
LILO Boot:
Step 6 Enter the following command to log on to the CDM as a single user, then press Enter:
LILO Boot# linux single
Step 7 Enter the path for the reset password script, resetpass, as follows at the bash# prompt:
bash# source /sonoma/sys/bin/resetpass
The script executes, resetting the password for the admin account and rebooting the CDM machine. After the CDM completes its reboot, you can log on using the default administrator account by entering the user name, admin, and the factory-configured password.
Important Notes
Important Notes
The following section contains important notes about the Cisco CDN Software Enterprise Solution that are not covered in the standard product documentation.
Routers not set to Auto-Negotiate result in Choppy Playback
In instances where CDN devices connect to routers or switches that have been configured to force the use of one data transfer mode (usually 100Mbit/s full duplex), some customers have complained of slow performance and “choppy” playback of media from their CEs.
Decreased playback performance is a result of the CDN device’s ethernet card switching from 100Mbit/s full duplex mode to 100 Mbit/s half duplex mode, in which data transmission and reception cannot take place simultaneously.
Most ethernet cards that negotiate duplex settings and port speeds are programmed to avoid conflicts when transmitting data by switching to half duplex mode automatically when they detect that they are connected to a device (for example, a hub) that does not negotiate duplex mode and port speed. Ports that are configured to force the use of one duplex setting and port speed prompt this response. We recommend making either one of two changes to alleviate the problem of choppy media playback and slow performance resulting from this conflict:
• Reconfigure the router or switch to negotiate the duplex setting and speed
• Reconfigure the CDN Device’s ethernet card, deactivating the negotiate feature and forcing the use of a duplex setting and speed that match your router’s settings
The decision about which device to reconfigure should be made in consultation with your network administrators and in keeping with your own corporate IT policies procedures.
Reconfigure the Router or Switch to negotiate Duplex Setting and Speed
To change the configuration of the router or switch your CDN devices connect to so that it negotiates duplex settings and speeds, refer to the installation, configuration, or command interface documentation that came with the hardware.
If you are unsure of the correct procedure for reconfiguring your hardware, contact the manufacturer’s technical support center before proceeding. For questions regarding your CDN software or Cisco hardware, contact Cisco’s Technical Assistance Center, TAC. Refer to the “Obtaining Technical Assistance” section on page 18 for more information on contacting the TAC.
Reconfigure the Ethernet Card to deactivate Negotiation
To change the configuration of your CDN device ethernet card so that it does not negotiate duplex setting and port speed, refer to the installation, configuration, or command interface documentation that came with your CDN device hardware.
Caveats
Default Administrator Account Name is ‘admin’
In Version 2.0 of the CDN Software Enterprise Solution, the default administrative account name has been changed from ‘sightpath’ to ‘admin.’ The new ‘admin’ account will adopt any non-default password that has been defined for the ‘sightpath’ account. The ‘sightpath’ account can be deleted using the procedure for “Removing Users” in Chapter 2 of the CDN Software Enterprise Solution User Guide.
Caveats
The following sections list resolved and open caveats for the CDN Software Enterprise Solution Version 2.0
Open Caveats—CDN Software Enterprise Solution Version 2.0
The following caveats are open (unresolved) at the time of shipment.
Content Distribution Manager
• Backup/Restore: The description of the System Reconfiguration feature on the CDM’s
Backup/Restore dialog box refers to “Appliance” instead of “Content Engine,” which is the proper term.
• CDM: The UI appears blank during import of a large number of media files.
To avoid this problem, we recommend importing smaller groups of files to the CDM.
• CDM: Viewing embedded media using Internet Explorer Version 5.5 results in “dead” browser window.
We recommend using Internet Explorer Version 5.0 or Netscape Communicator Version 4.7 with the CDN.
• Channel Previewer: The Page does not show newly added channels until the Refresh button is clicked.
• Media Editor: Media files cannot be assigned new names that use the slash (\) character.
• Media Editor: The CDM fails to remove large lists of files using Media Editor’s Remove feature. We recommend removing long lists of files in a series of smaller groups to avoid this problem.
• Media Editor: The Copy, Move, and Remove buttons are enabled when channels contain no media.
• Media Importer: After successfully importing media files and sub-directories using FTP, media files are removed from the import/channel_name folder, but the directory structure remains. We recommend deleting the remaining empty directories manually from the import/channel_name directory. Doing so will not in any way affect the imported files.
• Media Importer: Cancelling the import of large numbers of files does not stop import.
We recommend importing files in smaller batches, rather than large groupings. The Cancel feature works with smaller groups of media files.
Caveats
• Media Importer: CDM power failure or reboot during a file import results in pending files being dropped without notification.
We recommend determining which files have not been imported and re-depositing those files in the appropriate channel import directory so they can be reimported. When failure occurs during a large file import, re-deposit all files for import again to the proper channel import directory.
• Media Importer: Files with a plus (+) character in the filename fail on import, leaving the import job in a “pending” state indefinitely.
We recommend renaming any files with names containing the plus character before attempting to import them to the CDM.
Resolved Caveats - CDN Software Enterprise Solution Version 2.0
The following caveats, reported in earlier CDN Enterprise releases, have been resolved for the Version 2.0 release.
Content Distribution Manager
• CDM: Device Selector only lists names of devices featured in current dialog instead of all devices configured on CDN.
• CDM: Importing large numbers of media files results in the CDM hanging during import.
• CDM: Online help should reference files locally instead of pointing to files on a remote server.
• CDM: Nomenclature changes. The following changes have been made to CDN product and component names for Version 2.0:
– References to ‘SightPath’ have been changed to ‘Cisco.’
– References to ‘e.Director’ have been changed to ‘Content Distribution Network’ or ‘CDN.’
– References to ‘Studio,’ ‘Studio Administrator,’ and ‘NetRunner’ have been changed to ‘Content Distribution Manager’ or ‘CDM.’
– References to ‘Appliance’ or ‘EdgeRunner’ have been changed to ‘Content Engine’ or ‘CE.’
• CDM: Upgrading the CDM resets bandwidth to 5 Mb for playback and 10 Mb for replication.
• Channel Console: New channels are added to the bottom of the channels list instead of appearing in alphabetical order.
• Channel Settings: Channel size for the Default_Channel should be editable when the size is less than 1 Gb.
• Import Progress: The progress bar does not reflect the actual percent of job completed when importing large numbers of files.
• Media Editor: The dialog box does not display periods in filenames.
• Media Importer: The dialog box refers to the “Cisco” username in instructions for importing files using FTP. This username should be “admin.”
• Media Importer: Provide a link directly to the CDM’s Import directory for drag and drop import.
• TV Controls: The random button does not randomize the playlist.
• Users: The CDM allows creation of duplicate usernames.
• Users: The default administrator account was named “sightpath.” Instead, the name should be “admin.”
Documentation Updates
Content Engine
• CE: Entering the IP address of a CE in the browser produces a SightPath Appliance splash page.
