INTRODUCTION

BEARFACTS: MISSISSIPPI 2000-2001

The population of Mississippi in 2001 was 2,859,733 . Its rank was 31st in the nation. (The District of Columbia is included for ranking purposes.)

PER CAPITA PERSONAL INCOME

In 2001, Mississippi had a per capita personal income (PCPI) of $21,653. This PCPI ranked 51st in the United States and was 71 percent of the national average, $30,413. The 2001 PCPI reflected an increase of 3.5 percent from 2000. The 2000–2001 national change was 2.2 percent.

TOTAL PERSONAL INCOME

In 2001, Mississippi had a total personal income (TPI) of $61,922,038*. This TPI ranked 33rd in the United States and accounted for 0.7 percent of the national total. The 2001 TPI reflected an increase of 3.9 percent from 2000. The 2000–2001 national change was 3.3 percent.

COMPONENTS OF TOTAL PERSONAL INCOME

Total personal income (TPI) includes the earnings (wage and salary disbursements, other labor income, and proprietors' income); dividends, interest, and rent and transfer payments received by the residents of Mississippi. In 2001, earnings were 63.4 percent of TPI; dividends, interest, and rent were 16.1 percent; and transfer payments were 20.4 percent. From 2000 to 2001, earnings increased 2.3 percent; dividends, interest, and rent increased 1.5 percent; and transfer payments increased 11.3 percent.

EARNINGS BY INDUSTRY (NACIS)

Earnings of persons employed in Mississippi increased from $39,429,472* in 2000 to $40,188,051* in 2001, an increase of 1.9 percent. The largest industries in 2001 were services, 24.0 percent of earnings; state and local government, 15.8 percent; and durable goods

manufacturing, 11.3 percent. Of the industries that accounted for at least 5 percent of earnings in 2001, the slowest growing from 2000 to 2001 was durable goods manufacturing, which decreased 7.2 percent; the fastest was state and local government, which increased 5.6 percent.
