AGENDA

Overview of the Self-Guided Discovery

Initiative

Description of Self-Guided Discovery

Review of the Application Process and

Deadlines

(11)

WHAT IS SELF-GUIDED DISCOVERY?

Self-Guided Discovery enables a job seeker with a disability and their support network (e.g., staff, family members, etc.) to identify their own ideal conditions for employment and develop a career plan of their own, with the help of a facilitator or coach at key points in the

process.

This Discovery process includes Discovering Personal Genius, an employment planning tool and model for individual employment evaluation that results in a

comprehensive vocational profile, which can be used to develop a customized employment plan.

(12)

WHAT IS CUSTOMIZED EMPLOYMENT?

“Customized employment means individualizing the employment relationship between employees and employers in ways that meet the needs of both.”

- Federal Register, June 26, 2002, Vol. 67, No. 123 pp 43154-43149

Customized Employment is based on an individualized determination of the strengths, needs, and interests of the job seeker, but is also designed to meet the specific

needs of the employer.

Customized Employment may include employment developed through negotiation of job tasks,

self-employment, or other strategies that result in job responsibilities being customized and individually negotiated to fit the needs of the individual.

(13)

WHO BENEFITS FROM SELF-GUIDED DISCOVERY

AND CUSTOMIZED EMPLOYMENT?

Self-Guided Discovery may benefit:

Job seekers in the Workforce System,

including job seekers with disabilities

People with previous careers who recently

acquired a disability

People with a college degree, technical

certificate, or advanced training

Veterans with service-related disabilities

Transition age youth with strong family and

community ties

(14)

WHAT WILL FACILITATORS LEARN?

The webinars on Self-Guided Discovery will

teach facilitators:

How to take job seekers through a process for

discovering what they have to offer an employer

and their ideal conditions of employment.

How to assist job seekers in using their Discovery

profile to develop a job search plan and reach out

to employers.

DOCUMENT YOUR SUCCESS STORIES

LEAD Center is actively soliciting Employment and Career Success

Stories that detail creative approaches and strategies to achieving

positive employment outcomes for people with disabilities through the use of Customized Employment strategies and practices.

Success stories can be submitted by individuals, teams or organizations.

For each success story selected for dissemination that highlights how a person with a disability used the services of an American Job

Center to successfully get a job that matches their interests, skills, and conditions of employment, LEAD Center will fund professional development materials and activities chosen by the individuals, team and/or organization(s) involved in the submission (e.g., professional memberships, conference registration funds, journal subscriptions, videos and books, items to support the continuing employment of the person who is the focus of the story, etc.). LEAD Center will fund up to $2,000 per story.

Success stories must highlight the use of one or more aspects of Customized Employment, and include information about any work done with the employer, as appropriate. Guidelines for Success Stories are available at www.leadcenter.org/employment.
