Where does ECPS fit into ASPB?

Welcome to the irst ECPS newsletter. Every quarter, we hope to update y’all on section accomplish- ments, on-going section goals, and projects that need YOU. We also wanted a way to highlight section members and y’alls amazing accomplishments - from grants recieved to papers published - ECPS is here to foster a diverse and inclusive early career community, one where we can network, learn, and engage together.

ECPS was formed as a way to increase early career representation in the ASPB governance and add a diversity of voices to topics important to early career plant scientists. The ECPS leadership is blown away by the support we’ve recieved from our section membership and ASPB. We are here to serve and represent you. We encourage all section members to share their thoughts on what they want from their scientiic society.

Early career plant scientists are the future leaders of ASPB - Let your voice be heard.

Doubled Early Career Representation on

ASPB Committees

A new system of senior / junior representatives was proposed by ECPS to the ASPB Council in July 2020. This was unanimously approved by Council and implemented in October 2020.

Goals for rest of 2020

Submit proposal to ASPB Membership Committee

on alternative ECR membership models.

Specifically, to create new membership “tiers”

to ECPS section member Max Barnhart on being a 2020 ASPB BLOOME grant recipient.

Max and his Co-PI, Simone Lim-Hing are science communicators and outreach advocates. Their grant will cover the construction and local distribu- tion of a science zine as part of their organization the Athens Science Observ- er. Fostering a dialogue with local communities on scientific topics is crucial.

Zines enhance this exchange by making this outreach content approachable, artistic, trendy, and fun. Max and Simone are both graduate students at the

University of Georgia, Dept. Plant Biology.

The BLOOME grant was established with the goal to enhance public aware- ness and understanding of the essential roles of plants in all areas of life.

Issue in Focus

Adapting to a new normal:

COVID-19 & evolving expectations for

scientists

2020 - 2021 ECPS

“ This year’s issue in focus will discuss “Adapting to a New Normal,” which will encompass the challenges we have all faced in adapting to the challenges brought about by the pandemic and other catastrophic events we have endured and will likely endure in the near future. We plan to discuss how the pandemic has resulted in

changes in mental health, work-life balance, productivity, and workplace dynamics in a series of webinars and blog posts. Most importantly,

though, we want to hear from you! Keep an eye on your inbox to see how you can share your experiences about adapting to our new normal including our soon-to-be-launched series

“Humans of Plant Science. ”

Stephanie Klein Head of Culture, ECPS

“ The major role of the ECPS section is to better understand and advocate for the needs of early career researchers. Therefore, we want to foster a dialogue with you, our early career plant scien- tists, to hear about the obstacles you face every day and learn how we can improve the wellbeing of all plant scientists. Every year, the ECPS will emphasize a speciic issue in focus that has

recently been most impactful on our community.”

ECPS Leadership

Welcome New Leaders

Stephanie Klein, Head of Culture

Stephanie Klein earned her PhD from Penn State studying maize root traits associated with improved drought tolerance and is overall interested in crop improvement to combat environmental stress. When not sciencing, Steph enjoys taking her dog, Ouija, on hikes and trying to bake the perfect bread loaf.

Patrick Thomas, Head of ECPS-EDI Team

I’m Patrick Thomas and I am currently a 7th -year graduate student wrapping up at UC-Riverside. I was born and raised on Long Island and attended Penn State. I have a general interest in plant immunity and defense while my dissertation focuses on identifying whitefly resistance genes in alfalfa. I’m excited to serve in my new role as Head of EDI (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) for the ECPS Section. I have the honor of developing EDI content and connecting ECR groups together, I will ensure that our conversations and activities this year are centered around the pillars of equity, access, and diversity. While COVID has made times challenging, it has granted us some opportunities to be creative with the events we plan. I am excited to serve you and hope you enjoy the content we have planned!
