Parish Mission

St. Stephen is a Catholic community of faith striving to witness to the Gospel. Our Baptism and Confirmation call us to bring Christ’s Love to our families, our work places, and our community. Grateful for God’s gifts, we seek to nurture those gifts and to give back to the Lord by sharing our time, talent, and material treasure. In all of our parish activities we seek to develop a personal relationship with the Lord who directs our lives and a vision that sees the world with the eyes of Christ and that leads to a commitment to justice. We seek a sense of unity in Christ that leads us to be an open and welcoming people and a sense of joy in being graced by the gifts of God’s love.

From Our Pastor

The Parish and RE Offices will be closed on Monday, February 19, 2018 in observance of Presidents Day.

Regular offices hours will resume the following day.

Please note—there will be no Adoration hours on this Monday.

Dear People of St. Stephen,

Each year on the first Sunday of Lent the gospel reading tells the story of the temptations of Jesus in the desert after His baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan River.

Temptations are things that seek to draw us away from being the people the Lord has created us to be.

Mark’s version of the temptation story, which we read this year (the Sunday Scriptures are on a three- year cycle), is very brief. Mark tells us simply that Jesus was tempted in the desert for 40 days. Jesus fully embraced being human and was subject to temptation. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke expand on the temptations. Satan tempted Jesus by the promise to satisfy His hunger, by the promise to win Him public acclaim, and by the promise of power over the kingdoms of the world. Each temptation sought to turn Jesus away from the will of His Heavenly Father. Satan tempts Jesus to turn from God’s will and to seek some worldly pleasure.

This year our parish Lenten theme is

“Lord, guide us on your path.” Lent challenges us to embrace spiritual disciplines aimed at making us better disciples of Jesus. Each of us is called to grow as a follower of the Lord and to bring Christ’s love into our world. God calls us to be the best people we can, to be all that God created us to be. God calls us to more than mediocrity. Lent is meant to awaken us to the ways we can become a better version of ourselves. The season calls our attention to the aspects of our lives

that are holding us back. It shines a light on the ways we have settled for just getting by. The 40 days of Lent are a time of preparation for and anticipation of our celebration of the key saving actions of Jesus – His dying and rising. We are invited to embrace the spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

One of Matthew Kelly’s valuable insights is that our lives change when our habits change. Embracing the experience of Lent is a yearly way that we are invited to renew our lives. Lent calls us to form new, life-giving habits and to abandon old, self-destructive habits.

What are the temptations - things that can be pleasurable but lead us away from being the people God calls us to be - in our lives? Each of us has to answer that as an individual, but a couple of things are pervasive temptations in our society. One is the allure of material things, things generally good in themselves but the desire for which can destroy our perspective on what is enough and what is important.

Another temptation is pornography, that draws the good of sexuality away from seeing it as an expression of love and commitment and that takes away the dignity of the person. Each of us needs to face whatever it is that draws us away from fully following Christ and living with love for God and for others.

The disciplines of Lent help us to grow as Christ’s disciples. Prayer builds our awareness of the presence of God in our lives and

helps us to keep Christ at the center of life. Fasting helps us to train our bodies and focus our spirits on true and lasting values. Almsgiving helps us to grow in our love for our neighbor by inspiring us to take the needs of others into our hearts. Let’s pray for one another this Lent, that we will all embrace the Lenten disciplines and grow as disciples of our Lord in this sacred season. Lord, guide us on your path.

Next weekend all our parishioners will have the opportunity to see the inside of the new parish life center at a floor signing event. Parishioners will be able to sign the concrete floor in the parish hall portion of the building and to see the building in an advanced but unfinished stage.

The floor signing will be from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM next Saturday, February 24, and from 2 PM to 3:30 PM next Sunday, February 25. We will have markers to use for the signing. Many of our longtime parishioners remember the floor signing in the church in 2002. We can remember where we signed the floor before the floor finishings were applied. Next weekend you will be able to enter the parish life center by entering the narthex of the church and going through the education wing. There are no steps in entering the center in this way. I look forward to our parishioners having an opportunity to see the parish life center.

May God bless you and your loved ones.

Fr. Jay

From our Associate Pastor

Moc słowa w walce z pokusami

Na początku Wielkiego Postu Bóg po raz kolejny wyprowadza nas na pustynię i zaprasza do słuchania swojego słowa.

Powód? Droga życia ucznia Chrystusa prowadzi bowiem do spotkania ze słowem Bożym: czytanie go, zapamiętywanie, rozważanie, kontemplacji objawionych w nim Bożych dzieł i codziennego zaufania zawartej w mim Mądrości. To w słowie Bożym chrześcijanin szuka łaski, by wędrować przez pustynię doczesności do krainy życia wiecznego.

Annual Catholic Appeal

We invite those who have not already done so to respond to the Annual Catholic Appeal.

The appeal supports parishes and schools serving poor communities; youth, young adult, campus, and adult religious education ministries; continuing education for seminarians and priests and for lay volunteers and staff serving in our parishes; activities that promote respect for life at all stages; evangelization and liturgical programs; programs for marriage and family ministries; the Chicago Fire and Police department chaplaincies; and assistance for the poor and vulnerable overseas through Catholic Relief Services. Funds raised in excess of our parish goal come back to the parish for use in local ministries. For those who have not yet had an opportunity to make a commitment to the Annual Catholic Appeal, envelopes are available on the ushers’ table behind the back pew and at the parish office.

Your generosity in support of the work of our Church is appreciated.

February 18, 2018 First Sunday of Lent

“After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God….” ‐ MARK 1:14

Do you ever think about how difficult it must have been for Jesus to come into Galilee, knowing that John had just been arrested for teaching the same message that Jesus was proclaiming. It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of stewardship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender completely to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us.

The Holy Family Flowers were donated in memory of F.W. (Bill) McLean for the week of February 18, 2018.

Cold and Flu Season

In this particularly harsh cold and flu season, we offer some guidelines to take care of ourselves and those we encounter.

If you are really sick, stay home. God and the church understand.

If you are getting or getting over an illness, please do not shake hands at the sign of peace, but simply offer a smile and a kind word to those around you. If you are more comfortable not shaking hands, similarly offer a smile and a kind word to those around you.

Similarly, if you are getting or getting over an illness, do not drink from the chalice during Communion. Feel comfortable not receiving from the chalice if you have any concerns. Receiving the host is fully receiving the Eucharist. The priest, deacon, and ministers of communion all use sanitizer before distributing the Eucharist. The ministers of communion wipe the chalice after each person receives.

Remember to wash your hands frequently and to cough into your elbow. There is sanitizer near the entrances to church for those who wish to use it.

Being considerate of others will help us to stay healthy.

Living Stations—Join Us!

The Branches Teen Ministry is looking for 3 people to take roles in this year's Living Stations performance. There is a

need for two male speaking roles and one male non-speaking role. We meet Sundays at 4:00pm in the

church and practice for 1.5 to 2 hours. If you have questions or interest, please contact Kyle Groves at 708-324-2400 x149.

The Little Black Book is available to Parishioners in the narthex. All Catholics are asked to devote more time to prayer during Lent and The Little Black Book can be used daily to help us spend time with the Lord. Please take one and use it to pray daily during Lent. A $1 donation is requested to cover the cost of The Little Black Book which is based on the writings of Bishop Ken Untener of the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

The Parish and RE Offices are closed on Monday, February 19 in observance of Presidents Day. There will be no Adoration hours on this day. Please join us again Thursday or Friday.

Lenten Intentions

As part of our Lenten observance, we invite everyone to write a Lenten intention on the cards that are available in the narthex. Please write your intentions and family name (optional) on the card and place the card in the basket marked intentions. These intentions will then be placed on the crosses displayed in the narthex. By posting our intentions on the crosses, we show our willingness to reflect on the meaning of Lent.

Best Lent Ever

Don’t Give Up Chocolate for Lent Lent comes every year. It’s meant to be a time when we invite God to help us become the-best -version-of-ourselves. But for many of us, Lent isn’t a transformative experience. It’s just a time when we give up chocolate or something else we enjoy, then go back to it at Easter.

This year, you can change that with BEST LENT EVER. You’ll receive daily emails with short inspirational videos, practical tips for your everyday life, and real-life stories to encourage you in your journey. All you have to do is sign up at:

Baptism Hospitality Ministers

Baptism Hospitality Ministers represent the Catholic Community of St. Stephen at the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism.

As parish representatives, you will extend the warmth of our parish community by welcoming and assisting the young families who are bringing their babies to be Baptized, as well as their relatives and friends.

To those you greet-you are the heart and hands of Jesus Christ. Some of the people you greet may not have been in the church for some time. Others are not of our faith; and, still others may be searching for a faith community. What a wonderful opportunity to reach out to them as Jesus would. In fact, Jesus will be reaching out to them-through you!

In addition to your role as minister of hospitality, you will assist the priest or deacon for the Baptism liturgy.

The Sacrament of Baptism is typically celebrated every Sunday at 3pm. Preparation usually begins about 2:30pm.

Families begin arriving around 2:45pm. Baptisms begin at 3pm and end around 4pm.

Baptism Hospitality ministers typically serve once in a two-month period. You can participate in this ministry as a couple or as an individual.

If you feel called to this important ministry, or would like more information, please call Deacon Ken Zawadzki at (708) 342-2400 or email him at: [email protected]
