St. Stephen Deacon & Martyr

We are a Stewardship Parish

Parish Mission

St. Stephen is a Catholic community of faith striving to witness to the Gospel. Our Baptism and Confirmation call us to bring Christ’s Love to our families, our work places, and our community. Grateful for God’s gifts, we seek to nurture those gifts and to give back to the Lord by sharing our time, talent, and material treasure. In all of our parish activities we seek to develop a personal relationship with the Lord who directs our lives and a vision that sees the world with the eyes of Christ and that leads to a commitment to justice. We seek a sense of unity in Christ that leads us to be an open and welcoming people and a sense of joy in being graced by the gifts of God’s love.

From Our Pastor

Dear People of St. Stephen,

Since my last monthly report in the bulletin on the progress of our parish life center, you have noticed major progress on the building. The installation of the precast walls, the brick, and the steel has enabled us to see the shape of the exterior structure of the building. The concrete floor has been poured in the parish hall and will soon be poured in the other parts of the building. Work on the roof and the windows near the top of the walls of the hall will be beginning soon. We are confident that the entire building will be enclosed before the winter weather sets in, and thus the interior work can continue regardless of the weather. We’ve been blessed with good weather that helps the construction project. The projected completion date is early spring, and we seem to be in good shape to meet that goal.

While the construction continues, we are also involved in planning ways in which the parish life center can enrich the ministries of the parish. In this Respect Life month, we are reminded of our Catholic commitment to care for the needy among us. We are planning to have Thursday evenings as “service evenings”, in which we will have activities that give opportunities for service to all age groups in our parish while assisting in addressing real needs in our community. We are working with the Southwest regional office of Catholic Charities in this planning.

The parish life center will also give us the opportunity for many activities to enrich our parish ministries.

Parish dinners and breakfasts, senior meetings, parish receptions, and various social events will be able to be hosted in our hall and kitchen. We will be able to walk without going outside from the church to the parish life center without any stairs. Our children and teens will be able to use the center for social, athletic, and service activities to assist our religious education program, our parish school, our Growing with God, and youth group programs. The parish life center will be a valuable resource for retreats and other faith formation activities for all ages. As we open the parish life center, it will be available only for parish sponsored activities so that we can get a good sense of the needs of our parish ministries.

I want to thank all those parishioners who have already contributed to our parish life center building campaign.

We invite those who have not yet contributed to consider making a pledge or a one-time donation. No amount is too small. Pray for God’s blessing on the work of building the center and for the safety of all those working on it.

You may have noticed the signs on the doors of our building that indicate a prohibition of firearms on the premises. These signs reflect the archdiocesan policy for all church property. This policy does not apply to law enforcement officers and authorized security personnel.

The full policy is printed below. More information on the policy is available at archchicago.org

May God bless you and your loved ones.

Fr. Jay

Archdiocesan Firearms Policy

The Archdiocese of Chicago is committed to providing safe environments for the community. In the midst of a culture of violence, the Church is a staunch voice to call us to be a place of peace.

The Archdiocese has had a best practice restricting the presence of firearms in our facilities. All of our buildings will now display signage, consistent with the laws of the State of Illinois, indicating that these weapons are prohibited on the premises. Cardinal Cupich recently distributed a policy aimed and updating and clarifying the archdiocesan policy on the prohibition of firearms on all property it owns and controls.

The Archdiocese respects the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution and recognizes the right to lawfully possess a firearm for personal protection, hunting, or other sports. The Archdiocese sought to balance the rights of all who visit our properties with the need to protect children, the elderly, and other vulnerable populations. However, this policy is rooted in the belief that our churches and community spaces are intended to be sacred sites where people come to gather, pray, and worship God. There are exceptions to this policy for law enforcement officers and authorized security personnel.

From our Associate Pastor

(Iz 5,7)

W przypowieści syna gospodarza pochwycono, zabito i wyrzucono z winnicy.

Follow His Message

We have all experienced how difficult it is to show pa ence with people we can not rely on and who have disappointed us many mes. Let us consider how we would react in the situa on described in today's Gospel. Would we show as much pa ence as the vineyard owner? Would we be ready for such a sacrifice?

God works out of love and is always righteous. Everyone is given a chance. That is an enormous source of hope for all those who are late to seek out God. We have many “noble bushes” that can produce “good and juicy fruits,” but only under perfect condi ons. Saint Paul tells us, "Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4: 9) What does this mean in prac ce? It means that we must be involved in prayer and in the development of our spiritual life. If we make this effort, we will not be a “weed” but a “noble bush” that produces fruit pleasing to the Lord.

By accep ng bap sm, walking the path of faith, and deepening our faith, we are growing to become the fruit of faith. God's chosen ones are His "fruit from the garden" and God is a good gardener. He wants His crops to be large, therefore - choosing the land under the vineyard a er it has been lled. He leads His people to the Promised Land un l the weeds fall off and the noble bushes bloom. "Now the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are His chosen ones." (Isa 5: 7) What does today's Gospel - another about the vineyard - mean for us? God created a special vineyard on earth. It is a community of believers in the Holy Church erected by the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Our mission is to care for this vineyard--the Church. It is not only our place for gathering and prayer but it is also a place of responsibility for each member of the community. We all bear responsibility for each other because "God entrusted man to man." As in every work, and in the community of believers, in the Lord's vineyard, we must consciously prepare ourselves. We must do so even if we find it difficult to discover where we belong with our skills and abili es in the Church where the Lord has placed us. We are all the administrators of His goods that have been entrusted to us. Let's do it as long as the Lord gives us me! In the parable, the son of the host was captured, killed, and thrown out of the vineyard. The Son of God was thrown out of the vineyard and killed, crucified "beyond" the walls of Jerusalem, and the

Word of God was fulfilled. However, “the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” (Mt 21:42) Jesus is our hope, our faith, and our path to the Kingdom of God.
