Desktop Computing is Expensive

& Hard to Manage

Scenario: Physical PC failure

Report problem;

Attempt to debug remotely; Order new hardware;

Install corporate image; Install H/W-specific drivers; Patch, run AV & join domain; Install applications;

Configure for user; Map network drives;

Ship new PC to branch office; Physical install;

Disposal of old Hardware; Paperwork.

Hard to Manage (inflexible):

Data backup & security;

Hardware, application and patch deployment;

Mobile users, hotdesks & branch offices.

(4)

Centralized Desktop is the Solution

Benefits of centralizing the desktop in the data centre:

Desktop image is centrally maintained (on server-class hardware);

Data and applications never leave the data centre;

Access can be easily granted, monitored and revoked.

…but difficult to achieve with legacy solutions:

No isolation between user sessions; Challenges with resource control; Applications designed to run on

desktop OS not compatible for multli-user system.

PC Experience is Expected

Another barrier to centralized

solutions is familiarity of a PC:

Users are familiar & comfortable with PC experience;

Legacy solutions require ‘locking down’ to the point of being inflexible; Windows Terminal Server

VMware VDI is the Solution

VDI allows desktop to be

centralized AND gives desktop

experience:

Each user has a virtual desktop, which works just like a PC;

How Does VDI Work?

Server Based Computing

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) - virtual desktops that reside safe & secure in a corporate data center. Remote PCs connect to their

virtual desktop from any device running a remote display protocol (e.g. RDP, VNC or ICA).

(8)

How Does VDI Work?

VDI = VMware Infrastructure 3

VDI runs on top of VMware Infrastructure 3, gaining all the high-end benefits your virtual servers also get.

• Distributed Load Balancing • High Availability

Connection Broker

Connection Broker

VMware Infrastructure 3

Connection Broker manages connection from client to hosted desktop virtual machine.

Connection Broker is needed also for scalable environments:  Can suspend and resume virtual desktops on-demand

 Automatic Virtual Machine deployment for large Virtual Machine Pools

What is VMware VDM?

VMware Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM) is a connection

broker for VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

VMware VDM connects users to virtual desktops running

on VMware Virtual Infrastructure (VI), and plays a critical

role in security, access control, and overall desktop

(12)

VDM Components

VDM Connection

Server Primary component of VMware VDM, connecting clients to hosted virtual desktops. It is integrated

with Active Directory and VirtualCenter

VDM Security

How User’s are Authenticated?

 Active Directory Infrastructure  VDM Connection Servers

 Domain Users and User Groups

• Integrated with multiple domain environments

and trust relationships (out the box)

• Retain user-management processes and skills

• No user data-replication required

• SSO without ‘vaulting’ two-way hashed

passwords

The Close menu will only have options if these are available to the users. If they are not, Close will be a simple command and will not have a drop down indicator. Terminology for the drop down options is TBD.

Hovering over the window shade indicator will bring down the window shade but does not pin it. We might want to provide the option to hide the window shade completely.
