Q1: Who was Subhadatta and why did his legs tremble with fear?

Ans: Subhadatta was a poor woodcutter. One day, he saw four yakshas in the forest. His legs trembled with fear when he thought that the yakshas would curse him if they got angry. Q2: Why did Subhadatta go with the yakshas?

Ans: Subhadatta went with the yakshas to work for them for one month. Q3: What reward did he get for his hard work?

Ans: Subhadatta got a magic pot as a reward for his hard work. Q4: What did Subhadatta do with the reward?

Ans: Subhadatta showed the magic pot to his family. He drew out beautiful clothes and shining jewels from it.

Q5: Describe what happened during the feast.

Ans: During the feast, Subhadatta brought the pot out and started dancing with the pot in his hand. The pot slipped from his hand, broke and finally vanished.

Q1: What was a pushmi – pullyu ? Describe in your own words.

Ans: A pushmi – pullyu was the rarest animal of the African jungles. It had no tail, but had a head at each end and sharp horns on each head.

Q2: Why were pushmi- pullyus never seen in zoos?

Ans: Only one- half of a pushmi-pullyu slept at a time. The other half would always be awake and watching. This made them extremely difficult to catch and therefore, they were never seen in zoos.

Ans: The monkeys persuaded the pushmi – pullyu to meet Dr. Dolittle by explaining to him that he would not be locked in a zoo but would just be looked at.

Q4: What did Chee-Chee suggest to Dr. Dolittle?

Ans: Chee-Chee suggested Dr. Dolittle that he should take the Pushmi-Pullyu home where people would pay any amount of money to see him.

Q5: What did the pushmi-pullyu decide in the end?

Ans: In the end, the pushmi-pullyu decided to go with Dr. Dolittle.

The pushmi-pullyu made the Doctor promise that if he did not like the Land of Men, the Doctor would send him back.

Q4: What idea did the scribe’s wife have to save them from ruin?

Ans: In order to save them from ruin, the scribe’s wife suggested that they should go to Birbal for help.

Q5: What did Birbal do after hearing the scribe’s tale of woe?

Ans: When Birbal heard the scribe’s tale of woe, he brought out a bag of gold coins and emptied them on a table. He placed a mirror in front of hundred gold coins. The money lender saw the pile of gold coins. Birbal asked him to take all the coins in the mirror in return for the dream loan.

Possessive Adjectives and Possessive Pronouns

Possessive adjectives: are adjectives which answer the question ‘whose’. E.g. My, her, their, his, your, our, its.

Possessive pronouns are words which are used instead of nouns to show possession. E.g. mine, hers, theirs, his, yours, ours.

ARTICLES

The words ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’ are called articles. An article is a word that signals the coming of a noun.

Subject: Verb agreement

The verb in a sentence must always agree with the subject in number and person. If the noun or pronoun subject is singular, the verb must be singular. If it is plural, the verb must be plural.

ESSAY (AN IDEAL STUDENT)

An ideal student is someone who sets an example for others to follow. Such a student follows a regular code of conduct. She gets up early in the morning and takes care of her health. An ideal student is self – disciplined and punctual. She follows all the rules and regulations of the school. Apart from studies, she participates in other activities and school events.

An ideal student respects her teachers, parents and elders. She is humble and polite. She helps the poor and needy. She is always friendly with others and never quarrels with anybody.

OUR NATURAL RESOURCES

Q1. What are the two kinds of resources?

Ans. The two kinds of resources are natural resources and man-made resources. Q2. How do resources get exhausted?

Ans. Resource depletion is the consumption of a resource faster than it can be replenished. Human beings use natural resources to make things of utility such as houses, power and roads. The continuous use of these resources is the major concern for these resources to get exhausted.

Q3. Why are forests an important resource?

Ans. Forests are important natural resource because they provide us with many things like fruits, herbs, wood, medicine, rubber, timber, and fuel wood. Forests are also an important part of the earth’s climate system as they maintain the balance of gases like CO2 and O2 in the

atmosphere and provide habitat to a number of animals.

Q4. What would happen if there were no minerals?

Ans. If there will be no minerals on earth it will become very difficult for living organisms to survive. Besides it, industries, technologies and human race will also suffer.

Q5. Think of three ways by which we can save electricity. Ans. The three ways by which we can save electricity are as:

 Embrace natural light: Using natural light whenever possible instead of relying on artificial light, for example, using solar energy to run cookers and heaters.

 To change your bulbs: Replacing regular incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent (CFL) or LED bulb is a big electricity saver.

 Turn off the lights: Turn off lights and other electrical equipment when not in use.

SOILS OF INDIA

Q1. What is soil?

Ans. Soil is defined as the top layer of the Earth on which plants and trees grow. It is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, liquids and organisms that together support life.

Q2. How is soil formed?

Ans. The formation of soil is a long and slow process. It takes thousands, even millions of years to form a thin layer of soil.

Natural forces like sun, wind and water break large pieces of rocks into smaller pieces, which are further broken down creating a layer of soil.

Q3. List the varieties of soils in India.

Ans. There are six major types of soil in India. These are: 1. Alluvial soil 2. Black soil 3. Red soil 4. Laterite soil 5. Desert soil 6. Mountain soil

Ans. We can stop soil erosion by taking the following steps: 1. We should not cut trees.

WATER RESOURCES OF INDIA

Q1. Why is water important for life?

Ans. Water is one of the most important resources as life depends on it. All living things, animals, plants and human beings need water to survive. Water is used for various purposes like drinking, cooking, bathing, washing, cleaning and irrigation.

Q2. Write three uses of water. Ans. The three uses of water are as:

 Water is used for drinking, washing and cooking.  Water is used for irrigating soil.

 Plants use water in making their food. Q3. Write two uses of dams.

Ans. The two uses dams are as:

 The water of the dam is used to produce electricity.  Water stored in the reservoir is used for irrigation. Q4. What is rain water harvesting?

Ans. Rain water harvesting is the process of collecting and storing water to be used later. This stored rainwater is then used for drinking, irrigation etc. It is usually done in the areas where there is scarcity of water.

MINERAL RESOURCES OF INDIA

Q1. What are minerals?

Ans. Minerals are natural substances found deep inside the Earth and form the building blocks of rocks. They are taken out by the process of mining.

Q2. Define the two kinds of minerals ?

Ans. The two kinds of minerals are metallic and non-metallic minerals.

 Metallic minerals: These minerals contain metal in raw form. They occur in rare, naturally formed concentrations known as mineral deposits e.g. iron, copper, gold, silver and nickel.

 Non-metallic minerals: These mineral reserves consist of stone quarries and sand pits; chemical and fertilizer mineral deposits; salt deposits and other non- metallic minerals e.g. coal, salt and marble etc.

Q3. What is an ore?

Ans. An ore is a naturally occurring solid material from which a metal or valuable mineral can be extracted profitably.

Ans. Copper is used for making electric wires, machinery, pipes, tubes, vessels and utensils. Q5. In what ways coal is used?

Ans. Coal is used in the following ways: 1. It is used to generate electricity. 2. It is used as a domestic fuel. 3. It is used to run engine. 4. It is used in steel production.

Q6. Why do we need to conserve minerals?

Ans. We need to conserve minerals because they are limited. It takes millions of years for their formation and therefore, these resources are non-renewable and non- replenishable.

Ans: Rough surface causes more friction than smooth surface. Q4: Which form of energy is used by plants to make their food? Ans: Solar energy is used by plants to make their food.

Q5: Which energy is released when an atom breaks down? Ans: Atomic energy is released when an atom breaks down.

Q1: What do you understand by gravitational force?

Ans: Gravitational force is the force by which the Earth pulls an object towards itself. Q2: What is work? Explain with an example.

Ans: Work is said to be done when a force is applied on an object and it moves from one place to another E.g. work is done when we push or pull a table and it moves from its original position.

Q3: What is energy? Write the different forms of energy.

Ans: Energy is the ability to do work. No work is done without energy. The different forms of energy include heat energy, light energy, sound energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, atomic energy and electrical energy.

Q4: Write a short note on solar energy.

Ans: The Sun is the main source of energy on the earth. The energy that we get from the Sun is known as solar energy. Plants make food by using this kind of energy. Solar energy is also used to produce electricity.

Q5: Define geothermal energy and write what it is used for.

Ans: The heat energy obtained from the inner –most part of the earth is known as geothermal energy. This energy is used to produce electricity.

Q1: Why is Venus called Earth’s sister planet?

Ans: Venus is called Earth’s sister planet because it is almost as big as the Earth. Q2: What do you understand by the axis of the Earth?

Ans: Axis of the earth is an imaginary line passing through the Earth’s center about which it rotates.

Q5: How many constellations are known as so far? Name any one of them. Ans: There are 88 constellations known so far. Big Dipper is one of them.

Q1: What is the difference between a planet and a moon?

Ans: Planet is a heavenly body which orbits around the sun in its fixed path whereas moon is natural satellite which rotates around a planet.

Q2: What is the solar system? Name the planets in solar system starting with the one closest to the sun.

Ans: Solar system is the gravitationally bound system comprising the sun and all the objects that move around it.

The order of the eight planets starting from one closest to the sun is Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Q3: What are inner planets? Name them.

Ans: The first four planets in order of their distance from sun are called as inner planets. These planets have solid surfaces. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are the inner planets.

Q4: Describe the structure of the Earth.

Ans: Earth is composed of three layers. The outermost layer where water and land is present is called the crust. It is the layer where we live. Below the crust, there is a layer of molten rocks called the mantle. The innermost layer is the core which is made up of hot molten metals. It is the hottest layer of the Earth.

Ans: Seasons are caused due to the revolution of the earth and the tilt of its axis. Because of its tilt, when one hemisphere faces towards the sun, the other hemisphere is farther from the sun. So, one hemisphere gets more sunlight than the other . Thus causes changes in the season.
