Kabutey Ocansey Board President
RCTV began its 20th Anniversary celebration in November 2012. It has been a banner year,
marked by growth, new endeavors and investment for the future.
Just three years ago, we began upgrading the station, creating a new sub-control room and
purchasing equipment to enhance the quality of programs produced at RCTV.
Over the past year, we’ve made additional investments that are the culmination of careful
thought, research, budgeting and work. They include paying off the mortgage on RCTV’s
building, installing new studio lights, purchasing three state-of-the-art JVC High Definition
studio cameras and adding advanced digital recording capabilities. Over recent months, we
have been working on a new website that will better serve our members, producers and
viewers. All these enhancements are designed to increase member and producer benefits
and to expand the ways in which we serve our community. The new and colorful window
décor on the front of the building is an external reflection of these many internal changes.
In the past 12 months, there have been expanding collaborations with community
organizations, such as the one with The College at Brockport SUNY. Through this
partnership, we are producing Pythodd Remix, to be broadcast in January, focusing on
music, the arts and jazz.
Beginning in early June, our 20th Anniversary Film Forum and Speaker Series, held at the
Cinema Theater, shed light on important topics of local and national concern. This series,
plus increased community outreach, connected us to fresh, receptive audiences who are
enthused about RCTV’s mission.
Increased membership has resulted in stronger demand for studio time, classes and
professional development workshops. To address that growth, we’ll be developing broader
offerings in a variety of media-related areas.
As we look forward to 2014, RCTV is poised to transition toward becoming RCTV Media
Center, a community-oriented resource that will maintain education and community service
at its core, and that will grow to meet the demands of Rochester, a community growing in
vibrancy.

Highlights of the Year
This year, RCTV increased its community outreach through presentations at meetings of organizations such as The Lions Club, Pinnacle Place and the HAM Radio Association. During July, RCTV sponsored and exhibited at the Corn Hill Arts Festival where it recorded and posted online video clips from a variety of attendees who shared messages ranging from song and words to balloon art.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
This past summer, RCTV had window treatments installed on the front façade of the building. The new décor, designed by Rajesh Barnabas and produced by Signazon, has made a noticeable impact. This exterior enhancement reflects the transformation going on inside the building that includes new lighting for the studio, new digital recording equipment, and three new JVC high definition cameras that have dramatically improved the image RCTV is able to broadcast. New membership procedures have also been put into place providing greater security.

20TH ANNIVERSARY FILM FESTIVAL AND SPEAKER SERIES
In celebration of its 20th Anniversary year, RCTV held a well-attended 3-part film festival and speaker series at the Cinema Theater on Clinton Avenue South. The first film, Drum Major for
Justice – the Franklin Florence Story featured the work of local
producer Chris Christopher and filmmaker Carvin Eison. In the documentary Comfort Zone, local producers Kate Kressmann-Kehoe, Sean P. Donnelly and Dave Danesh explored the regional implications of global warming. For the last film, Heist: Who Stole the American Dream, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist David Cay Johnston shared insights on the film and challenged the audience to become more engaged with local politics.
RCTV conducted well-attended spring and fall classes in TV Studio Production and editing. A variety of professional development workshops were also offered that included a class on Motion software by RCTV Producer/Director Rajesh Barnabas, a four-part workshop on Garage Band with musician and audio engineer Subhash Kulkarni, a
workshop on Making Movies on a Shoestring given by Rochester Movie Makers Founder Stanley Main, and a technology and procedures workshop demonstrating the new equipment in the sub-control room. A diverse schedule of workshops is planned for the upcoming year.

HIGH SCHOOL AND RCTV
Rajesh Barnabas worked with the HEART Coalition to create a 20 minute program about youth leaders in the Rochester City School District. The film is being shared with RCSD administrators and City Recreation staff and other youth-oriented organizations.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays during the school year, Shabaka Collier worked with students from RCSD School #58 to teach media literacy and production through an after-school program which RCTV oversaw.
This year, the RCTV/ Writers & Books Media Camps were filled to capacity with both new and returning participants. In addition to producing a program live for their parents, the students created shorts that will be submitted to the KidLitFoundation’s 90-Second Newbery Awards Film Festival, founded by author James Kennedy. One of last year’s submissions, based on the book My
Father’s Dragon, is listed among the
25 all-time favorite submissions to the festival.

Summer of Opportunity Interns learned animation during their internship
Through the City of Rochester and RochesterWorks, RCTV worked with 12 interns from the Summer of Opportunity Program. They incorporated the use of Garage Band, Motion, and several animation programs into the works they produced, including an interview with mayoral candidates Lovely Warren and Alex White, with President of the Puerto Rican Festival Orlando Ortiz, and with former NFL Football Player Roland Williams. Each youth produced a soundtrack and a two-minute animation as part of the program, and the group took field trips to the Buffalo Bills Camp, to the Space Observatory at RIT and to a showing of the movie King’s Faith by local producer Nick DiBella.
