FUJITSU ETERNUS CS800
DATA PROTECTION APPLIANCE
ETERNUS CS800 IS A TURNKEY DATA PROTECTION APPLIANCE
WITH DEDUPLICATION FOR MIDRANGE ENVIRONMENTS
The ETERNUS CS solution family offers an outstanding data protection for dynamic infrastructures. ETERNUS CS minimizes backup times and fulfills all recovery time objectives for each business critical environment. By aligning tape, disk and advanced deduplication technology into a suitable ILM strategy for data protection, enterprise data protection can be flexibly aligned to different SLAs. ETERNUS CS enables the consolidation of storage devices for data protection thus simplifying your company’s administration, saving energy and lowering the total cost of storage, while making efficient use of the most cost-effective technologies.
The ETERNUS CS model 800 is a turnkey data protection appliance with deduplication and provides a simple and affordable solution for midrange customers which follow a disk backup strategy. The advanced deduplication technology reduces typical capacity requirements for disk to disk backup up to 90% or more to reduce costs. ETERNUS CS800 replicates backup data between sites using global deduplication to reduce typical network bandwidth needs by a factor of 20 or more. ETERNUS CS800 is also supporting the Symantec OpenStorage for replication and Direct Tape Creation.

OFFERING
Affordable data protection for midrange environments
For many midrange IT departments, traditional backup has not kept up with the need for faster performance and trouble-free restore. Disk to disk systems, which can increase backup speed and reliability, fill up too quickly, hold too few recovery points, and do not offer a practical disaster recovery solution. Some companies are even spread across branches and for the IT department it’s more difficult to provide reliable backups for distributed locations. Within its portfolio for Efficient Data Protection, Fujitsu offers products and services with future-leading technologies to attain the best and most efficient way of keeping data protected. The ETERNUS CS800 data protection appliance with data deduplication is tailored specifically for midrange environments and solves even complex backup problems simply and affordably by integrating the most advanced storage technologies into a simple, turnkey solution.

Turnkey appliance for efficient data protection
ETERNUS CS800 is a turnkey data protection appliance with deduplication and provides a simple and affordable solution for midrange customers which follow a disk backup strategy. Its disk to disk speed and deduplication technology is presented over a NAS interface (an additional VTL interface will be available later this year) that makes it easy to deploy with all leading backup applications and simple to share between different servers in any Ethernet environment. The advanced deduplication technology of ETERNUS CS800 reduces typical capacity requirements by up to 90% or more to reduce costs and leverages also easy backups for VMware environments. For disaster recovery, backup data is replicated between
sites using global deduplication to reduce typical network bandwidth needs by a factor of 20 or more with support of the Symantec OpenStorage (OST) API. An additional Direct Tape Creation option is available. The result is improved data protection that leverages dynamic infrastructures for fast return on investment.
Deduplication reduces disk capacities
Conventional disk backup fills up rapidly, increasing costs and forcing users to migrate or expire data. The ETERNUS CS800 data protection appliance is designed specifically to provide a disk backup solution by making the most advanced deduplication technology both affordable and easy to use. ETERNUS CS800 deduplication technology dramatically reduces disk capacity requirements by using small reference pointers to replace the redundant data blocks inside backup datasets. This technology makes disk backup more affordable and lengthens retention time through deduplicated data storage. Fujitsu offers right sized units for all capacity requirements which are seamless scalable from small up to higher environments and simplifies consolidation efforts.
Improved and automated disaster protection
Disaster protection for distributed sites is a persistent IT necessity. Managing removable media across multiple remote sites is expensive, time consuming, and error-prone. Traditional disk to disk systems don’t offer an effective solution since backup volumes are too large to allow replication for most users. ETERNUS CS800 deduplication technology makes remote replication a practical and cost effective tool for disaster protection by dramatically reducing the bandwidth required to move backup data over networks. Offsite copies of backup sets are created automatically and copied to central data centers, letting users reduce or eliminate the need to manage removable media. ETERNUS CS800 makes replication an easy, lights-out background operation that automatically includes advanced features such as global deduplication, encryption of transmitted data, and support for Symantec’s OST API as part of a fully integrated, application-aware process.
Reduce disk needs for backup of virtual environments
Support for Symantec OpenStorage
The ETERNUS CS800 support for Symantec and its OpenStorage API (OST) allows customers to set policies in NetBackup that initiate copying data between different sites and creating physical tape from data on disk. The actual data movement, however, instead of going through the media servers, is sent directly from one ETERNUS CS800 system to another and directly from an ETERNUS CS800 system to a tape library. Users have all the advantages of the deduplication, replication, and direct tape links, but they control the entire process simply and automatically from their backup application which also provides a central catalog for all the data.
ETERNUS CS800 lowers costs
Deduplication typically reduces the disk needed to store backup data by up to 90% or more also reduces typical network bandwidth needs by a factor of 20 or more for replication. ETERNUS CS800 allows IT departments to cost effectively retain backups on disk for extended periods, providing faster restores and increased recovery points such providing rapid return on user investment for the widest variety of data to protect on both physical and virtual servers. The high rates of savings is accomplished through reduced offsite vaulting costs, cut media purchase expenses and less time efforts for managing backup.
Integration into dynamic infrastructures
Within its Dynamic Infrastructures strategy Fujitsu delivers a comprehensive offering which enables customers to retain agility and business advantage. ETERNUS CS800 is designed to smoothly integrate into dynamic infrastructures and is certified with all leading backup software, allowing users to solve their backup problems easily and economically without changing their existing architectures or procedures. Following scenarios are ideal for ETERNUS CS800:
ETERNUS CS800 as a stand-alone appliance Active-active replication against loss of data ETERNUS CS800 in branch offices in combination
with a central located ETERNUS CS to consolidate disaster recovery requirements
Disaster resilience for ETERNUS CS800 as operational service
Disaster Resilience for ETERNUS CS800
Disaster resilience for ETERNUS CS800 is providing a complete service concept for customers with no further datacenter or separated fire compartment available. The service includes the provision of a further ETERNUS CS800 at an off-premise location in a Fujitsu datacenter (e.g. as a second or third data protection entity) as well as the monitoring of the system and the replication between the sites.
