THE DIFFERENT
KINDS OF
SHOPS
When you travel around Greece, seeing and tasting food is a great way to get to know the country. For this reason, it is a good idea to stop by a bakery or patisserie when you are in Greece. As in every country, Greece has its own types of bread, cakes, and pastry, which adds to the excitement of travelling there.
First, let’s take a look at the different types of shops that sell bread, pastry, and other sweet things.
Φούρνος
bakery: a place where they sell or make fresh bread. They usually also sell other products made from dough (e.g. κουλούρια (bread rings), σπανακόπιτα (spinach pie), τυρόπιτα (cheese pie)). Some bakeries also sell milk, juices, eggs, etc.
Αρτοποιείο
bakery: same meaning as “φούρνος” but a more sophisticated word, coming from
ancient Greek “άρτος” = bread and “ποιώ” = make (ancient Greek) = a place where they make fresh bread themselves.
Ο φούρνος Το αρτοποιείο Το αρτοπωλείο Το ζαχαροπλαστείο Το σαντουιτσάδικο bakery bakery bakery pastry shop sandwich bar
01
Αρτοπωλείο
bakery: coming from the ancient “άρτος” = ψωμί and “-πωλείο” / < πουλάω = to sell, here they only sell bread and such similar products as a φούρνος but the products are delivered by another company.
Ζαχαροπλαστείο
pastry shop/patisserie: especially for sweets, desserts and eventually also ice cream. This type of shop does not sell bread, however. The word comes from “ζάχαρη” = sugar.
Σαντουιτσάδικο
sandwich bar: usually a place where you can buy ready-made fresh sandwiches, grilled sandwiches, and snacks, as well as fresh juice, smoothies and coffee.

There are four kinds of bread which you can find in almost every bakery:
Take a look at the video lesson, where you will see a picture of each type and you can get a better idea of what those types of bread look like in Greece.
B. Savoury | Αλμυρά
Typical for a Greek bakery are the following:
τα κουλουράκια το τσουρέκι το σταφιδόψωμο η μπουγάτσα ο λουκουμάς cookies
sweet Easter bread bread with raisins creamy custard pie
similar to a doughnut, with sugar around C. Sweet | Γλυκά
And last but not least, in a bakery you can also buy sweet things…
02
A sandwich bar is the perfect place to get a quick lunch. They usually sell drinks, coffee, pies and of course also sandwiches. Let’s have a look:
Most things you can buy in a sandwich bar will be known to you and might look similar to what you are used to back home (in Europe and North America). The word μπαγκέτα comes from the French word “baguette”, and the word τοστ comes from the English “toast”, so that might be easy to remember.
Of course also the word σάντουιτς, is not a Greek word but is of foreign origin.
If you are not sure what a σπανακόπιτα, ζαμπονοτυρόπιτα or τυρόπιτα looks like, take a look at the video lesson, where you will find some pictures.

As we mentioned before, the word “ζαχαροπλαστείο” comes from “ζάχαρη” (zachari) = sugar. Thus, most things you can buy here have to do with desserts, sweets, pastries, chocolates, and ice cream.
The patisserie is also the perfect place to buy dessert to bring as a gift when you visit friends. They are usually open till very late at night.
Greek patisseries sell many types of pastry, and it is difficult to make a choice. We certainly have not named them all, but listed those that you usually find in every pastry shop. If you want to see some pictures of these pastries, to get a better idea, please take a look at our video lesson. η τούρτα οι πάστες το κέικ το παγωτό τα σοκολατάκια η μηλόπιτα η καρυδόπιτα η λεμονόπιτα το γαλακτομπούρεκο τα σιροπιαστά (π.χ. ο μπακλαβάς, το κανταΐφι, ...)

When you start learning Greek, it is very important to know the words “Yes and No”: ναι = yes
όχι = no
In order to use the negative form of a sentence, you can use three words:
a. Δεν: “not” or “don’t”
Δεν είμαι η Μαρίνα, είμαι η Μάγια. I am not Marina, I am Maya. Δεν μιλάω ελληνικά. I do not speak Greek. Δεν δουλεύω στην Αθήνα. I do not work in Athens. The “δεν” form is used when it is placed in front of a verb.
b. Μην: don’t!
Μην μιλάς! Do not speak!
Μην δουλεύεις τόσο πολύ σήμερα! Do not work so much today!
This form is only used in the “Imperative form”, so when you give an order. You will not need this form so much at the moment, since you will first need to learn the “Imperative form”. However, if you hear somebody saying “μην” to you, you probably are doing something you should not do. It simply means: don’t!
c. Όχι: not - Έχετε τυρόπιτα; - Όχι τυρόπιτα, αλλά σπανακόπιτα. - Δουλεύεις σήμερα; - Όχι σήμερα, αλλά αύριο.
The “όχι” form is used when it is placed in front of a noun (not verb).
Listen to the extra language video explaining the negative form, which you can find on the video platform.
SOME GRAMMAR:
THE NEGATIVE FORM
- Do you have cheese pie?
- Not cheese pie, but spinach pie. - Do you work today?
- Not today, but tomorrow.

When you need to ask a question, you will often use the verbs “to have” and “to want”.
a. The verb “έχω”
Below is the conjugation of the verb “to have” in the Present tense.
Examples of phrases:
Θέλεις νερό; Do you want water? Θέλω καφέ. I want coffee.
In Greek, it is not necessary to always use the personal pronoun. We only use it if we want to emphasize the person who is performing the action. Otherwise, you can just use the correct form of the verb. In doing so, the subject of the verb will be understood.
Listen to the extra language video explaining the verbs έχω and θέλω, which you can find on the video platform.
εγώ έχω εσύ έχεις αυτός/αυτή/αυτό έχει εμείς έχουμε εσείς έχετε αυτοί/αυτές/αυτά έχουν(ε)
USEFUL VERBS:
TO HAVE AND TO WANT

I have you have he/she/it has we have you have they have Examples of phrases:Έχετε σπίτι στην Ελλάδα; Do you have a house in Greece? Σήμερα δεν έχουμε τσουρέκι. Today we do not have tsoureki bread. ‘Εχω μάθημα αύριο. I have a lesson tomorrow.
b. The verb “θέλω”
Below you can see the verb “to want” in the Present tense. It is conjugated exactly the same way as the verb έχω above.
εγώ θέλω εσύ θέλεις αυτός/αυτή/αυτό θέλει εμείς θέλουμε εσείς θέλετε αυτοί/αυτές/αυτά θέλουν(ε) I want you want he/she/it wants we want you want they want
Now that you know how to name everything correctly, it is time to order.
There are many things you can ask for in a bakery. Let’s have a look at the most common phrases / questions: Έχετε...; Έχετε μια σακούλα; Αυτό, τι έχει μέσα; Θέλω... Πόσο κάνει; Ευχαριστώ!
USEFUL PHRASES:
ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT

You can use this phrase when you need a bag.
Αυτό, τι έχει μέσα; What does this (pointing) have inside?
