EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

1.

BACKGROUND

The Nelson Mandela African Institute Science and Technology (NM-AIST) has been established

under the Tanzania’s Universities Act No. 7 of 2005, and as part of a network of African Institutes

of Science and Technology (AISTs) in Sub-Saharan Africa. The NM-AIST envisions becoming a

World-Class Institution of Higher Learning dedicated to the pursuit and promotion of excellence in

science and engineering, and their applications for economic growth and sustainable development

in Africa. The NM-AIST will deliver and promote high quality and internationally competitive

teaching and learning, research and innovation, and public service in science, engineering and

technology for enhanced value addition to people and natural resources, and entrepreneurship to

stimulate and catalyze economic growth and sustainable development in Africa

.

2.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

The NM-AIST is now in the process of recruiting academic, administrative and technical staff in

order to strengthen delivery of

postgraduate studies

in various fields of science and engineering,

within 2010/2011. NM-AIST has started with Master’s and PhD programmes in two schools,

namely; (i) Life Sciences and Bio-Engineering, and (ii) Mathematics, Computational and

Communication Science and Engineering. In addition to the two schools, NM-AIST has also

established academic departments which offer PhD programmes for the time being and later

Masters programmes in Materials Science and Engineering, Water and Environmental Science and

Engineering, and Sustainable Energy Science and Engineering. The programmes also incorporate

selected modules of Humanities and Business Studies that will enable our students to develop

attributes of effective and efficient technology leadership and industry captaincy.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES - ACADEMIC STAFF

Applications for employment are invited from citizens of

Tanzania and other East African

countries

to fill various academic positions with key qualifications in the areas of specialization as

shown in Table 1. The minimum qualifications and salary scales for the various academic positions

are as depicted in Table 2.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES - ADMINISTRATIVE AND TECHNICAL STAFF

For Senior Administrative and Technical Staff, viz. salary scales 18-21; applications for employment

are invited from citizens of

Tanzania and other East African countries.

For Junior Administrative

and Technical staff, viz. salary scales below 18, applications for employment are invited from

citizens of

Tanzania only

to fill the positions as shown in Table 3. The entry salary offered to a

candidate will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

(ii) Conducts physical checks and accounts,

(iii) Arranges for physical placement i.e. location and banning

(iv) Arranges packing and deliveries.

(v) Takes charge of Section/Department stores and becomes responsible for safety and accounting of all

stock under his care and supervision;

(vi) Guides all junior staff on matters relating to storekeeping;

(vii) Assists in the analysis of purchasing equipment and undertakes subsequent purchasing process of

(ii) Implements specified maintenance plans for laboratory facilities and office equipment. (iii) Implements specified technical plans and

designs connected with research, students practical and consultancy work.

23 Laboratory Scientists/Engineers/T echnologist I (1 Life Sciences, 2 Water &Envir, 2 Materials) 5 PUSS 13-14 Holder of MSc/B.Sc. or equivalent in a relevant field from a recognised institution. Engineers should be with a

relevant registration as Graduate

Engineer / Technologist.

Engineers/Scientists in water and environment should possess a bias in Analytical Chemistry/ istrumentation, hydrology or hydrogeology and a relevant experience of at least three years. Holder of a PhD and a relevant

experience will have an added

advantage and will be considered for a higher position.

(i) Carries out scientific administration and

organizes practicals for students in the respective School/Department

laboratory/workshop facilities
