Neighborhood Initiative Unit Update

Congratulations to NI Unit Officer James Decrisantis and K9 Mika for graduating from fire arms

detection training! Mika was one of four K9’s to graduate from this program and has been

specially trained to detect and alert Officer Decrisantis to the presence of firearms and spent

ammunition shell casings. This is such an accomplishment as this is the first of its kind training in

Connecticut! Great job Officer Decrisantis and K9 Mika!

Meriden Fire Department Promotions

Congratulations to Deputy Fire Marshall John Yacovino on his promotion to Fire Marshall and Fire Inspector Dennis Campbell on his promotion to Deputy Fire Marshall. We wish both of them much success in their new roles and look forward to working with them in our neighborhoods!

Stuff a Cruiser Event: Thurs Nov 21st 4pm to 8pm

The Meriden Police Dept NI Unit Officers and the Council of Neighborhoods are having a Stuff a Cruiser Food Drive at the Stop and Shop Supermarkets at 485 Broad St and 77 Centennial Ave on Thursday Nov 21st 4pm to 8pm which will benefit the residents in our community. We will be accepting

non-perishable food items which will be donated to an area food bank so that those in need can enjoy a Thanksgiving Dinner. Please come out to support our efforts!

South Meriden Groups: Turkey and Toy Drive Sat Nov 23rd 10am to 1pm

The Neighborhood Associations will be holding their 16th Annual Turkey and Toy Drive on Saturday Nov

23rd at the South Meriden Firehouse on Camp St. Turkeys will be collected and donated to the YMCA for the Annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner. New, unwrapped, non-violent toys for children of all ages will be collected and donated the Spirit of Giving program sponsored by the Meriden Police and Fire Depts and Hunters Ambulance. Yule Fest on Colony St: Sat Nov 30th 2pm-6pm

2nd Annual Yule Fest will be celebrated on Colony St. Santa will be arriving by train! Tree Lighting Ceremony, Children Games, Pics with Santa and much more! Food Trucks and Vendors selling items including homemade crafts, wood workers and specialty items. Bring the family and enjoy the festivities. Admission is free!

City of Meriden Leaf Collection

The Highway Division collects leaves free-of-charge for City residents starting in mid-November and lasting until mid-December or until the first snowfall. Additionally, the City does not collect leaves in the spring. Residents do not have to make any appointments, they only have to place their leaves at

curbside. Please note that only leaves in biodegradable bags will be collected and the use of duct tape is not permitted.

City of Meriden Citizen Service Request Form

Residents may complete a “Citizen Service Request Form” on the City’s website to request services for a wide variety of issues. Some of the issues that can be reported include reporting pot holes, graffiti, Illegal dumping, code violations, bulky waste, traffic sign repairing or replacement. This form is for non- emergency requests only. For immediate response in an emergency situation please call 911.

New Opportunities: Energy Assistance Applications

New Opportunities is announcing that the 2020 Heating Assistance Program for Meriden, Wallingford, Berlin and Southington residents is now open. Please call (203) 235-0278 to schedule an appointment to apply for the program. Also, if someone has a shut off notice from Eversource, they may “walk-in” (no appointment necessary) to New Opportunities so their staff can mediate with Eversource and work toward a solution to have the service tuned back on.

City of Meriden: Street Light Outage Reporting

The City of Meriden street lights are being managed by Tanko Lighting and are responsible for maintaining the street light equipment. The process to report a street light out or any other non-

emergency issue with a street light, residents can submit a service request on line at:

www.tankolighting.com/meridenmaintenance or by calling 855-201-2613. .

Adult and Child Flu Vaccines Now Available at the Meriden Health and Human

Services Department

Adult and child seasonal influenza (flu) vaccines are now available at the Meriden Health and

Human Services Department.

The cost of the adult vaccine is $20.00 (cash or check) for self-pay clients. FluBlok is $45.00. The

Department accepts Medicare, Medicaid, HUSKY, Aetna, Connecticare and Cigna insurances.

Child doses of the vaccine are available at no charge to children 18 and under.

The vaccine is given by public health nurses at the Clinic office, 165 Miller Street, Monday

through Friday. Appointments are highly recommended, walk-ins are welcome (note there may

be a wait). Please call (203) 630-4234 to make your appointment.

Meriden Senior Center

For a full list of November happenings at the Meriden Senior Center, please visit our website

www.meridenhealth.com, click on Senior Services on the left. The Meriden Senior Center is

located at 22 West Main Street; parking is on Hanover Street (rear of building).

AARP Safe Driver Course

Wednesday, November 6 from 9:00am-1:00pm

Taking this safe driver course could save you money on your car insurance! Check with your

Insurance Agent to see how much of a discount you could receive. Cost for AARP members is

$15.00, and non-members is $20.00. Please make checks payable to AARP. Sorry, no cash! Call

the front office at 203-237-0066 to sign up. Eligible Non Senior Center Members are welcome

and encouraged to register prior to the event.

Veteran’s Day Celebration

Thursday, November 14 from 10:30am-12:00pm

Our Antique Veterans will be holding a flag presentation in honor of all

Veterans who have served our great nation. Please join us in the Dining Room to honor and

support all branches of the armed forces. Entertainment will be provided by Vicky Rose

performing a Marilyn Monroe tribute performance. Wear Red, White, and Blue! Eligible Non

Senior Center Members are welcome and encouraged to register prior to the event.

Winter Care Packages for the Homeless

Stephanie Denya, our Associate Health Director, will be starting her annual donation collections

for the winter care packages for the homeless. Every year we like to make care packages for our

community members in need as the weather gets colder. If anyone would like to make a

donation of personal care items, please drop it off to Stephanie at 165 Miller Street, Meriden.

We are looking for items including:

• Deodorant

• Toothbrushes

• Toothpaste

• Hand/Foot Warmers

• Scarfs & Mittens

• Packaged socks

• Blankets

Meriden Youth Services

Current Drug Trends Presentation - Wednesday, November 13, from 5:30-7:00 PM

This event will be held at Child Guidance at 384 Pratt Street, Meriden. It is sponsored by the

Meriden Healthy Youth Coalition, Rushford, Child Guidance, and the Meriden Department of

Health and Human Services. This is an adult only presentation on current drug trends among

our youth, understanding the signs of potential problems, and what to do for prevention.

Dinner will be served at 5:30 and the presentation will begin at 6:00. Registration is required,

Youth CPR Class - Monday, December 30, 2019 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM

The Meriden Department of Health and Human Services is offering CPR Certification for

Meriden youth. This training will be held at 165 Miller Street, 2

Floor, Teen Conference Room.

This training is open to Meriden youth in grades 7-12 where they will learn American Heart

Association CPR for adults and children. The cost of the class is $20 (cash or check) and must be

paid in advance. Youth are not registered until payment is received. Spots are limited so please

Public Health Education

QPR Suicide Prevention Training - Friday, November 22, from 8:30- 10:00 AM

This training will be held at 165 Miller Street, 2

Floor, Teen Conference

Room. This is an event for people to be trained in QPR (Question,

Persuade, Refer) and learn how to recognize the warning signs of a

suicide crisis. Participants will receive certification as a QPR Gatekeeper. A

light breakfast will be served from 8:00-8:30 AM. Seating is limited so
