Construction and Bid Status

Construction Update

The Build 21 Team has made exciting improvements to the High School Campus during the summer of 2011. These site improvements include a new synthetic turf soccer field, an elaborate tennis complex, and state of the art press boxes for the softball, baseball, and track fields. A grand opening to showcase these improvements was held on August 25, 2011. Work to be completed includes painting of the press boxes and resurfacing of the running track, which is schedule to begin September 19, 2011.

With the first summer of construction wrapping up, we will focus our attention to the multiple phases of renovations and additions to the High School Building. Summer preparation work for the renovation included demolition of the High School Technology Wing. This wing was removed to allow for a new classroom addition. Bids for the geothermal loop field and structural shell were taken August 30, 2011 with construction scheduled to begin the end of September. In order to beat the weather the structural elements of the classroom wing addition were bid ahead of the finishes to expedite construction.

GO Holland continues to monitor and update construction phasing plans, schedules, and parking requirements to minimize interference with the daily operations of Holland High School. We thank you for your cooperation and support in these efforts!

Bid Update

Future work associated with the Holland High Additions and Renovations project will go out for bid in October of 2011. These improvements include the bulk of the High School renovations and additions. We are scheduled to bid this work during the months of October and November with construction to begin late December.

The construction industry continues to be a buyers market. GO Holland anticipates receiving 130 bids spanning a projected 30 bid categories. To maximize interest and ensure an impressive representation of bids, GO Holland will publicize bid opportunities in local and state media outlets, such as the Holland Sentinel and the State of Michigan website. We are committed to maximizing your bond budgets!

should go hand in hand. Christopher Dodd

Environmental Highlights

Geothermal System:

GO Holland will be installing a Geothermal system located at the site of the old tennis courts. A geothermal system is a series of wells that rely on the earth’s natural thermal energy, a renewable resource, to heat and cool buildings. In lieu of depending upon an inconsistent external air-source, which can have extreme temperature variations from season to season, the geothermal system uses the earth’s relatively constant temperature of 55°F. Through a series of wells, drilled 300 feet below grade, the closed system maintains a more consistent temperature of the enclosed liquid, requiring less energy to bring the air to the desired temperature. The system uses 40 to 70% less energy on an annual basis to heat and cool a building.

Pervious Pavement:

GO Holland installed pervious pavement at the tennis and soccer complex of Holland High School. As the name indicates, pervious pavement allows stormwater to permeate through the pavement and into the ground. This is an instrumental component in recharging groundwater and reducing stormwater run-off. The use of pervious pavement not only meets the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stormwater regulations, it is acknowledged as a Best Management Practice (BMP) by the agency.
