EDICAR PLASTICOS MANUFACTURING PROCESS
48
For more than 30 years, PVC membranes have opened their way to all waterproofing sectors, thanks to their many advantages, such as flexibility and strong tearing resistance, combined with superior welding ability, low safety risks, ease of Installation and excellent whole life costs.
The Cefil range of waterproofing products have a long and successful history, produced under strict ISO9001 quality control standards. Cefil synthetic waterproofing membranes have been specifically developed to achieve a fast, sustainable, durable environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing waterproofing solution. Over 7.000.000 sqm of Cefil membranes are produced and distributed yearly by Ceplastik.
Carefully selected polyester and glass reinforcements are coated on each side by a superior blended PVC flexible plasticiser. These reinforcements considerably improve stability, strength, puncture resistance and long term durability. The result is a homogeneous high quality flexible membrane.
Cefil waterproofing membranes are available in a range of formats to suit almost any type of waterproofing concept for a building or structure. These formats can be broken down in to 4 main categories:
o RP Mechanically fixed self protected systems o RV Fully adhered self protected systems o ECO-ROOF - Green roof systems
o Inverted roof systems with additional protection.
These categories are all available in a range of colours with associated accessories to complete any architectural concept and to offer a complete warranted system for the most discerning of clients.
This brochure has been prepared to assist specifiers and Contractors in selecting the most appropriate products from the range available.
Introduction
‘Over
7.000.000 sqm
of
Cefil membranes
are
1. UV RESISTANCE - Cefil membranes are integrated with UV resistors at source during the manufacturing process. Exposed membranes therefore provide superior UV degradation resistance.
2. FIRE RESISTANCE - Cefil membranes are Fire resistant and self-extinguishing. In addition, they cannot be ignited by flying sparks. Cefil membranes have passed some of the most stringent European regulations including BS476: part 3. The use of Cefil membranes is therefore unrestricted under the current building regulations.
3. WATERTIGHT - Cefil membranes, when correctly heat welded, homogenise together to become one at molecular level. Therefore the join is at least as strong as the membrane itself with no weak points. The membrane has been rigorously tested for moisture resistance, behaviour under hydrostatic pressure and impact strength, and classed as leakproof. Under the European standard peel test, the Cefil membrane broke outside of the seam without any sign of weld failure.
4. FLEXIBILITY - Cefil membranes have all been produced to comply with the needs of today’s buildings with regard to structural and building movement. They are dimensionally stable and will repeatedly accommodate normal structural movement without fatigue. Low temperature flexibility has been tested down to -35 degrees C.
5. SUSTAINABILITY - Cefil membranes have been rigorously tested by many European testing establishments and have a proven successful history of providing long term waterproofing to a variety of building designs. The product life expectancy is documented as ‘in excess of 20 years’ and laboratory accelerated weathering tests have shown this to be even greater. Cefil materials are installed Worldwide in a variety of climatic extremes and show superior performance and durability - a crucial element of environmental sustainability.
6. GUARANTEE - Extensive roof assured warranty schemes are available that a client can trust for up to 10 years. Under correct installation conditions Cefil membranes have 10 years guarantee against any production fault.
7. QUALITY - Cefil membranes are produced strictly in accordance with ISO9001 quality standards. The calandering & lamination process is computerised to ensure consistent quality and all raw materials randomly tested prior to integration and development.
Reasons to select
8. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY - Cefil synthetic membranes are produced in line with the ISO14001 environmental management system. This policy covers development, Raw materials, Production, Distribution, Installation, Service and recycling. The product provides a healthy long life expectancy and can be recycled at the end of its useful roofing life. Assembly and seam welding is rapid with a low energy output and the membranes lightweight construction minimises transport energy. Cefil products therefore represent a minimum burden on the environment, from conception to completion.
9. SAFETY - Cefil membranes are fast and easy to install and offer significant reductions in relation to risk with many alternative roofing systems. To compliment the membrane, all specifications are Safety conscious with the integration of polyurethane glues (CFC & HCFC free) and even self-adhesive Vapour barriers to avoid the use of hot bitumen boilers. This provides peace of mind to building owners and Installers and achieved preferred system status with some leading building Insurance underwriters.
10. AESTHETICS - Cefil roofing membranes come in standard light grey and lead grey. However, alternative colours are available on order request, blue, green, beige and red. All colours are tested for Colourfastness under UV and Sunlight accelerated procedures to ensure long term aesthetic performance.
11. TECHNICAL SUPPORT - Ceplastik can offer everything a specifier or building owner will need. Our team are available throughout the project to ensure complete client satisfaction.

To enable superior performance of fully adhered single ply waterproofing, the carrier is required to provide different movement characteristics. A glass fibre mat is used, which is coated on both sides with plastisol. Cefil RV1 and RV2 are highly resistant to low and high temperatures and can easily accommodate cyclic structural movement whilst maintaining durability and flexibility in a bonded format.
Cefil RV1 and RV2 membranes are particularly suitable for roofs where mechanical fixing is not desirable, such as a Profiled metal decking with a powder coated underside as the finished product or certain types of concrete deck. It is also semi permeable to water vapour, and therefore provides an ideal solution to roof areas where interstitial condensation is
considered a higher risk than usual (e.g. over swimming pools).
Cefil RV1 and RV2 are normally installed as a complete system, including vapour barrier, Insulation and ancillary products.
The installation method comprises of the laying out of 1 or 2m wide rolls with side and end overlaps of subsequent membrane, applied with an even coat of Cefil Membrane Adhesive to the membrane and to the surface that it is being applied to, i.e. deck or insulation. The laps are subsequently heat welded using semi automatic hot air welding equipment to form a homogeneous joint at the seam. In inverted or ballasted roof format, Cefil RV can be loose laid and laps subsequently welded.

Green roof systems
The demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly Green roofs (also known as roof gardens or ‘living’ roofs) has increased dramatically in recent years. The purpose of this section is to provide information about environmentally friendly green roofing systems.
Environmental concerns and the reduction of Carbons are a high priority to many building designs. The increased pressures on Urban land and density levels in built up areas continue to reflect the adverse impacts on drainage, biodiversity, climate conditions, water abstraction and green space.
Simple Green roofs have been around for centuries, such as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon for example, constructed in 600 B.C. Today, modern green roofs need to meet the growing range of requirements attached to increasingly sophisticated building designs.
Formats available:
o Warm roof (Flat or tapered Insulation)
o Cold roof
o Inverted roof
Finishes available:
o Extensive - Thin lightweight growing medium - minimal maintenance
o Intensive - Deep growing medium (for plants, shrubs, trees, turf etc)
o Bio diverse - Recycled aggregate from site - generally left to colonise naturally or seeded with an annual
wild flower mix or local seed source.
The Cefil ECO-ROOF system has been designed to offer specifiers and building owners a technologically advanced, sustainable, environmentally friendly, aesthetically pleasing and harmonious Green roof solution which represents an excellent Whole life cost* analysis to a building.
Cefil eco-roof suitable for: o Metal profiled decking
o Timber decking (Minimum 18mm plywood)
o Concrete deck o Roof refurbishment

Informative Section
Specific benefits of
Cefil
o Extended roof life - The Cefil synthetic waterproofing membrane as an exposed finish has a life expectancy of ‘at least 10 years as actual legislation requires’. As an ECO-ROOF system with a protected green roof, the membrane is not exposed to UV light or mechanical damage. In addition, the vegetation cover moderates the temperature extremes. Therefore the Life expectancy of a Cefil membrane as an ECO-ROOF can be expected to last as much as 50 Years, saving the client the cost of re-waterproofing during the average lifetime of a building and so represents excellent whole life costs.
o Rainwater management - The Cefil ECO-ROOF system retains, absorbs and re-cycles rainwater, thus considerably reducing the water run off returned to the drainage system. In heavy rainfall, excess water run off is delayed, thus reducing the impact on the urban sewerage network. In association with a collective irrigation system (also available as part of the Cefil ECO-ROOF system), excess rainwater can be collected and returned to the roof vegetation in times of drought.
o Energy Management - The Cefil ECO-ROOF system slows a buildings heat gain and loss. The vegetation layer and the trapped air prevent rapid air exchange and high heat gain on the roof surface which improves the energy performance of the building. In addition to the more ambient temperatures of the roof surface, plants transform heat (energy from the sun) and soil moisture into humidity through evapotransporation processes, naturally cooling the building. The result is a reduction of cooling in the building, an extended life span of the roof system, a reduction of heat reflection in to the atmosphere and lower heating and cooling energy costs over the lifetime of the building. Lower energy means less CO2 emitted in to the atmosphere.
o Urban ecology - The Cefil ECO-ROOF can help satisfy a psychological and sociological need by creating a re-assuring planted environment to counter the aggressiveness of city life. Air Quality is improved by the natural aspect of the ECO-ROOF vegetation filtering the air and absorbing polluting particles and a reduction of the heat Island effect, which is the main cause of Ozone pollution. Cefil ECO-ROOFS also provide biodiversity and wildlife for a wide variety of animals, insects and invertebrates.
o Noise and sound reduction - The Cefil ECO-ROOF system can reduce external sound by 8-10db compared with a conventional roof system. The Vegetation barrier and entrapped air within the vegetation acts as a sound Insulation barrier and sound waves are absorbed, reflected or deflected.
o Recyclable materials - Many of the products used within the Cefil ECO-ROOF system are recyclable or made from recyclable building materials, rubber or plastic. Where possible, dependant on project location, the Cefil ECO-ROOF system can re-use secondary aggregates.
o Single source of responsibility - All Cefil ECO-ROOF system components are supplied by Cefil UK ltd, from roof primer to finished planting varieties. Our technical field team and specialist consultants inspect the quality of material and workmanship on a regular basis throughout the contract works. Once the system is complete, our commitment to our clients does not end. Cefil UK will re-inspect the ECO-ROOF plants and vegetation during the buildings retention period (usually 12 months) to ensure establishment

ROOFING
Extensive
System Description
Green roofing with a thin growing medium requiring minimal maintenance and usually no Irrigation. The vegetation use is resilient and forms a carpet like self-sustaining plant community on the roof. The Cefil Extensive ECO-ROOF system is available as a sedum mat or plug and plant (pre germinated sedum), substrate based roof. Extensive ECO-ROOF systems are much lighter than Intensive and are available for application to Timber and Metal decks as lightweight green roof solutions.
Sedum mats are supplied with a selection of sedum plants including Lydium, Hybrium, Album, Acre, Reflexum, Sexangulare and Spurium which are already cultivated on to a root retention/ substrate layer. The varieties are carefully selected to provide colour and variety throughout the year and offer an ‘instant greening’ of the roof finish. The root retention/ substrate comprises a coir-backed membrane with polypropylene mesh for strength, crushed lava rock and specially formulated soil compound. NB: Sedum blankets require the minimum of long-term maintenance.
Typical System build up o Cefil high bond roof primer
o Cefil glass fibre 2mm polymer modified bituminous vapour control layer, applied by torch on method (alternative self adhesive available)
o Cefil eco-therm RV, CFC, HCFC free and Zero Ozone depletion rated Rigid urethane Insulation, bonded in Cefil adhesive (Insulation thickness to suit required thermal value).
o Cefil RP150, High quality BBA certified synthetic waterproofing membrane and complementary fixings.
o Cefleece 3g - non woven polyester fleece, loose laid
o Cedrain - Drainage and reservoir board - loose laid
o Cefilter - geotextile filtration layer, loose laid
o Multi layered fertile extensive soil mix (approx 80- 120mm)
o Sedum and plant variety mix to suit project location and requirements

Intensive
System Description
Green roofing with a deep growing medium which can sustain Plants, shrubs, planters, trees, paving and turf. Intensive ECO-ROOF requires artificial irrigation and should be treated like any garden with regular maintenance and care. The Intensive ECO-ROOF solutions are the heavier of the two systems due to soil depth and therefore extra structural design is required to sustain the saturated weight and imposed loadings to a building.
Typical System build up o Cefil high bond roof primer
o Cefil glass fibre 2mm polymer modified bituminous vapour control layer, applied by torch on method (alternative self adhesive available)
o Cefil eco-therm RV, CFC, HCFC free and Zero Ozone depletion rated Rigid urethane Insulation, bonded in Cefil adhesive (Insulation thickness to suit required thermal value).
