This release of EMC SourceOne for Microsoft SharePoint Storage Management provides Atmos support for Remote BLOB Storage (RBS). The release also includes encryption and compression for BLOBs. RBS is used with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010/2013 and Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010/2013 and provides
administrators with advanced options to off-load and manage storage of binary large objects from the SharePoint SQL Server. This chapter is organized as follows:
◆ Overview ... 10
◆ RBS features ... 11
◆ Accounts and permissions... 13
Overview
This release of EMC SourceOne for Microsoft SharePoint Storage Management provides Atmos support for Remote BLOB Storage (RBS). The release also includes encryption and compression for BLOBs.
EMC SourceOne for Microsoft SharePoint Storage Management features
This installation guide describes how to install EMC SourceOne for Microsoft SharePoint Storage Management. This release provides support for Remote BLOB Storage (RBS) which is used specifically with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010/2013 and Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010/2013.
◆ RBS provides the ability to externalize the storage of BLOBs outside of the SharePoint SQL Server and on the Atmos Server. ◆ BLOBs can be encrypted.
◆ BLOB can be compressed.
EMC SourceOne for Microsoft SharePoint features
EMC SourceOne for Microsoft SharePoint is a separate product which provides the following SharePoint-related features:
◆ Archiving ◆ Search
◆ External BLOB Storage (EBS)
RBS features 11 Introduction
RBS features
Deploying the SourceOne RBS software installs the EMC SourceOne RBS Provider in the farm and adds the full set of user interfaces to your Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010/2013 or Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010/2013 Central Administration site.
Feature details
Feature details include:
◆ Content Database Settings – Provides configuration settings for storing BLOB content normally stored in the SharePoint
2010/2013 database in remote storage.
◆ Migration Service – Migrates BLOBs from External BLOB Storage (EBS), the SharePoint SQL database, or another RBS store to the EMC SourceOne RBS store.
◆ Maintenance Service – Performs periodic garbage collection and other maintenance.
◆ Health Monitor – Monitors RBS storage for available free space and provides alerts based on configured thresholds.
Compare: Native Microsoft Support and SourceOne RBS
SourceOne RBS provides advanced features which enhance the native support that Microsoft provides.
Table 1 Native Microsoft Support and SourceOne RBS feature comparison Area Native Microsoft Support SourceOne RBS features Health monitoring Administrators must manually monitor
RBS storage.
The health monitoring page provides a centralized dashboard, enabling you to configure storage thresholds and automated alerts.
Migration Administrators can migrate all content through a Powershell commanda.
However, once migration is started, it cannot be paused, and must run until complete, potentially impacting SharePoint performance when running.
The Migration Service provides more granular control of BLOB migration, enabling you to set time limits which, when reached, pause the migration job. The job then automatically resumes according to the schedule you configure.
The PowerShell command migrates BLOBS at the content database level.
The Migration Service allows you to configure migration scope at the content database or site collection level.
No migration reporting features. Provides job and content database migration information.
Maintenance The SQL RBS Feature Pack provides a basic console applicationb to perform
maintenance by creating Windows tasks for each content database. May be a challenge to use in large environments with many content databases.
The Maintenance Service leverages the SQL RBS feature pack application, but also provides a centralized configuration page to manage the Windows tasks for a specified content database.
To customize, administrators must modify the application’s config file manually.
Configuration page enables you to remove unnecessary tasks and modify maintenance parameters. The configuration page enables you to modify the application config file to add corresponding content database connection strings.
No reporting functionality. Must monitor application console in real-time.
Enables you to view task reports.
Accounts and permissions 13 Introduction
Accounts and permissions
Review and establish the following accounts and permissions required for the RBS feature.
Installation
permissions
The installation account used to install software on a SharePoint server must be a member of the following groups:
◆ Local Administrators group for the computer on which installations are run as well as all SharePoint web front-end servers. If User Account Control (UAC) is used, select Run as
administrator when running the installation.
◆ SharePoint Farm Administrators (Full Access) group. Members of this group have full access to all settings in the farm. They can also take ownership of any content site.
◆ SharePoint Central Administration Site Collection Administrators group.
Run-time
permissions
RBS features require the following run-time permissions:
◆ Impersonation account credentials with read/write access to RBS storage locations.
◆ The Central Administration Pool Account must have necessary privileges to access the Windows Task Schedule of other SharePoint Web front-end servers.
System requirements
Review and establish the following system requirements.
Note: Refer to the EMC SourceOne for Microsoft SharePoint Storage Management Release Notes for detailed compatibility information.
Microsoft SharePoint
software
The RBS feature requires a supported version of Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010/2013 or Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010/2013 on an operating supported by that product.
The RBS feature requires that Microsoft RBS support be installed as a prerequisite. RBS is a Microsoft SQL Server library API set that is incorporated as an add-on feature pack for supported versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and 2012 Enterprise Edition.
Install the appropriate RBS support for your environment. The following resources may provide additional information: ◆ Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010:
