BusinessObjects Software
Inventory Tool
Introduction
The BusinessObjects Enterprise Software Inventory Tool is a Java-based maintenance tool available to administrators of BusinessObjects Enterprise. The tool creates and maintains an inventory of all changes made to Business Objects software via Business Objects installers and allows users to view these changes.
What does the BusinessObjects Software
Inventory Tool do?
The Business Objects Software Inventory Tool collects and displays information on your BusinessObjects installations.
The tool monitors BusinessObjects Enterprise after it is installed and logs updates such as fixes and service packs. The logged information is presented chronologically and the inventory list can then be searched for specific files, features, and patches.
Installation
The BusinessObjects Software Inventory Tool is automatically included with your BusinessObjects XI Enterprise installation. It is available for all Windows platforms supported by BusinessObjects XI.
How does the BusinessObjects Software
Inventory Tool work?
When a Business Objects installation program runs, information on what is being installed is added to the manifest.xml file, including the following information:
• Records of all Business Objects installations including the original product, service packs, and fixes.
• Records of the files associated with each Business Objects installation such as .war and .dll files.
BusinessObjects Software Inventory Tool
To launch the Software Inventory Tool
• Click Start > Programs > BusinessObjects XI 3.1 > BusinessObjects Enterprise > Software Inventory Tool
The Software Inventory Tool interface appears.
Using the BusinessObjects Software
Inventory Tool
The BusinessObjects Software Inventory Tool displays three separate tabs: • Feature
• System View • Search
The Feature tab
The feature tab displays the Business Objects products that are or were installed on your system at the currently selected point the the timeline at the top of the display. Under each product heading are the features of that product. Highlighting any of the features listed for a product will display a list of the files that are associated with that feature, including a description of the file and its version number.
The Adapt tab
The Adapt tab allows you to view the adapt numbers associated with a Business Objects product or patch. Adapt is a system used internally by BusinessObjects to track feature development and technical issues. If you are looking for specific information on a requested feature or fix, this can help you locate it.
Selecting a point on the timeline at the top of the screen, or selecting an event from the drop-down below the timeline will display all the products

installed at the selected time. Listed below the products will be the Adapt numbers associated with the features and fixes for that product. Selecting one of the Adapt numbers will display the files associated with that Adapt.
The Search tab
The Search pane of the BusinessObjects Software Inventory Tool allows you to refine the information displayed in System View. It is divided into three parts:
• "The search field": Use this field to enter search parameters.
• "Search History": Lists all previously-entered search parameters for this session. This information is lost when you close the tool window. • "Search results": Shows all files that match the current search parameters,
and their locations.
The Software Inventory log file
The tool creates a log file for recording each time the tool is launched. The log.txt file is saved in the default installation folder together with the inventory.xmlfile: C:\Program Files\Business
