4. Philosophy and objectives of Master of Science in Management Information Systems Program Philosophy of the program

In globalization era for which information technology plays an important role in management of organizations in terms of process reengineering to create higher efficiency and improve better service to customers . The most crucial factor that organizations require from their investment in information technology is to create ultimate benefits and value to the organizations especially to achieve strategy of the organizations . Therefore, managing information systems in accordance with business strategy of the organizations is supremely essential.

Moreover, information technology at present has been developed continuously and higher capabality, which makes the organizations have to change and develop appropriate information technology; to render the highest benefits to the organizations.

As a result, Department of Management Information Systems, Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Thammasat University considers that creating personnel with managerial and information technology skills especially management of information technology in line with overall strategic of organizations or business is very crucial to development and progress of the organizations. This also renders support to prepare the organizations and nation to have well-prepared human resource leading to high positions as Chief Information Officer: CIO. Therefore, the department has developed Master of Science Program in Management Information Systems Program with objectives to create personnel in this field with the qualification stated above.

Objectives

1. In order to develop personnel and people who are interested in information technology to understand and apply it as a tool

to support strategy and to achieve goals of organizations.

2. In order to develop personnel in the field of information technology to hold Chief Information Officer: CIO position. 3. In order that the lecturers study and exchange updated knowledge together with research conducting and system

development on information technology with qualified personnel from external departments and foreign lecturers.

4. In order that Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy becomes the leader in education on management information

systems of the country.

6. Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold these 3 qualifications as follows:

6.1 Applicants must hold at least Bachelor degree in any field from an institution accredited by Thammasat University Council.

6.2 Applicants must have at least 2 years of working experience.

6.3 Applicants must meet the requirements in regulation number 8 of Thammasat University’s Regulation on Graduate School of BE. 1998.

7. Admission

Applicants must pass the admission process that is

7.1 Submit Scholarly Management Aptitude Requirement Test (SMART-II) result arranged by Scholarly Management Aptitude Requirement Test Center at Thammasat University. The test date must not exceed 2 years;

7.2 Submit TU-GET result arranged by Language Institute, Thammasat University or TOEFL or IELTS (the test date must not exceed 2 years);

7.3 Pass the test of Department of Management Information Systems; 7.4 Interview.

8 Academic System

8.1 The program’s medium of instruction is Thai language but the program administration may hold special sessions for which foreign guest lecturers are invited.

The foundation courses will be graded by P (Pass) or N (Not Pass) that would appear in student’s transcript and the credits and grades will not be calculated with other courses of the program.

Students with business background in Bachelor Degree level or equal can transfer credits of such courses. 8.4 The program provides 2 options one of which students can select as follows:

8.4.1 Plan A: A2: With Thesis

This is research-based course consisting of 12 credits of thesis and minimum 33 credits of other courses as follows:

1. Required courses 24 credits 2. Elective courses 9 credits

3. Thesis 12 credits Total credits 45 credits 8.4.1.1 Thesis requirements

1) Students can register for a thesis after they have completed at least 24 credits of required courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00.

2) Students must pass a foreign language test with a "P" grade before they are allowed to defend their thesis.

3)Thesis writing and defending would be in compliance with Thammasat University's Regulations for Graduate School of BE. 1998.

8.4.2 Plan B: Comprehensive Examination (Non-Thesis)

This consists of at least 39 credits of course work with 6 credits of independent study instead of a thesis as follows:

1. Required courses 24 credits 2. Elective courses 15 credits 3. Independent Study 6 credits

Total credits 45 credits

8.4.2.1 The comprehensive examination consists of written and/or oral exams. Plan B students who are qualified to take a comprehensive examination must have completed 24 credits of required courses and be in the second semester of the second year with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. The students must pass the comprehension examination with a "P" grade .In Case of fail (“F”), students can retake the comprehensive examination only 3 times otherwise they will expulsion from the program and results of every examination will be recorded.

8.4.2.2 Students can register for the Independent Study Course after they have completed at least 24 credits of required courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. The comprehension examination would be in compliance with “Thammasat University's Regulations for Graduate Students BE. 2541 (1998).”

8.4.2.3 Students must pass a foreign language test with a "P" grade before they are allowed to take an oral examination for Independent Study.

9. Duration of Study

The maximum study period must not exceed 14 semesters.

10.Registration

Evening students must register at least 3 credits for course work and/or thesis no more than 9 credits per semester. The registration is under the requirements in number 11 of Thammasat University's Regulation on Graduate School of BE. 1996.

11.Grading System and Graduation

11.1 Grading system

Academic performance is divided into 9 levels with a grade and value per one credit as follows:

11.1.2 Only credits of the courses with grades of S (Satisfactory) or at least C

will be counted for graduation. Any course whether required or elective for which students get a D or F will be counted for the GPA and cumulative GPA of that semester. In case of a transferred course, its credit will be included but will not be computed for cumulative GPA. However, the courses eligible for transferring must be required courses whose total credits do not exceed 6. 11.1.3 Independent Study Committee consisting of external and internal

qualified examiners will be appointed for Independent Study examination.

11.1.4 Thesis and Independent Study will be given a grade of S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory). 11.1.5 The Foreign Language Test, foundation courses and comprehension examination will be graded P

(Pass) or N (Not Pass). 11.2 Graduation

Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy will propose the name of the eligible graduates for approval from the University Council after examining if the graduates have satisfied all these conditions.

11.2.1 Students have completed all the courses as required by the program and

complied with all the conditions defined by the faculty and university with minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00.

11.2.2 Students have received S for thesis examination (Plan A: A2). 11.2.3 Students have received S for Independent Study (Plan B).

11.2.4 Students have received P for comprehension examination (Plan B). 11.2.5 Students have received P for the Foreign Language Test.

11.2.6 Students have received P for all Foundation Courses

11.2.7 For students of Plan A: A2, they must have their theses published or at

least whole or part of the theses accepted to publish in a journal or academic paper or they must present them to an academic conference with proceeding.

11.2.8 Other requirements must comply with Thammasat University's Regulation on Graduate School of BE. 1998.

14.Place and Tools of Study

The program is conducted at Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Thammasat University, Tha Prachan Campus and jointly makes use of tools with other programs of the faculty.

15.Library

Students can make use of Thai and English books and journals in Thammasat University Library and 173,507 books and journals in the library of Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Thammasat University including variety of databases for research. Also, the students can use other libraries such as central libraries of every university both in Bangkok and provincial region, document centers of government and private agencies.

16.Budget

The program is self-supporting project and expense for each student per academic year is about 90,000.00 Baht.

Course Description

Foundation Courses

IS511 Introduction to Data Communication and Computer Network 1 credit

Study of computer network technology and appropriate applications of the technology with business’ nature. The topics of study include components and functions of telecommunication, application of LAN and WAN in business, network systems, analysis and design of telecommunication and existing and promising network technologies, distributed processing, disaster prevention and security along with ethics that should be considered when using or creating data communications with computer networks.

IS512 Introduction to Object Oriented Programming 1 credit

Study of fundamental concepts of object-oriented programming and practice of using one or severalobject oriented high level programming languages.

The topics of study include fundamental principle of abstraction, class and object model, inheritance, method overloading, concurrent programming, and event-driven programming with the use of modern programming interfaces.

IS561 Fundamental of Financial Accounting and Management 1 credit

Study of fundamental financial accounting and managerial accounting, accounting recording process and issuance of financial statements, including accounting data analysis for financial planning, decision and controlling that is beneficial to managers.

IS562 Introduction to Management and Organization Behavior 1 credit

Study of concepts, theories and principles of organization and human resource management together with concepts and theories of organization behavior to create understanding in personal, interpersonal and between group behavior processes. To study the impacts of management process on personal behavior to use such knowledge for analysis of management methods that are beneficial to and in accordance with environment of each organization.

IS563 Introduction to Marketing 1 credit

Study of meaning and significance of marketing as a main business factor, focusing on modern marketing concepts, roles and significant impacts of marketing on economy and society, environment that affects marketing decision, components of marketing, consumer’s behavior, marketing mixes and basic marketing management process.

IS571 Introduction to Managerial Decision Analysis and Problem Solving 1 credit

Study of basic knowledge on analysis and managerial decision models under risky and uncertain circumstances. The topic covers expected value and expected losses, utility, probability, and value of information including study of related theories such as Bayes’ Theory, Inference and decisions making.

Study of concepts, theories, information technology and impacts of information technology on organization management.

The topic of study cover understanding of roles and impacts of information technology, applying information system in management including control, operation support of decision and strategic management of organizational.

IS622 Business Database Management 3 credits

Study of theories and management of information with the use of database management and design concept and application of database management system.

The course focuses on organizational database management, application of database management system and database design including data security.

IS623 Information System Analysis and Design 3 credits Prerequisite: IS 621 Management Information Systems in Business and

IS 622 Business Database Management.

Study of analysis and design of information systems that correctly and completely satisfy user’s requirements. The course covers system concepts and analysis methodology to define users’ requirements of information systems and system design that fulfills those needs. Students will practice using tools to analyze, design and develop the system and study simulation patterns for benefits of analysis and design.

IS671 Business Research Methodology 3 credits

Study of research concepts, principles, patterns, methodology and processes including effective research report. The course cover sething with research questions and hypothesis making, information resource, data collection, analysis and conclusion and presentation of results in various manners.

IS721 Strategic Information Systems/Information Technology 3 credits Prerequisite: IS 621 Management Information Systems in Business

Study of conceptual frameworks of strategic information systems creating competitive advantages, analysis of impacts, risks and opportunities, formulating strategy to define information systems/information technology in organizations along with effective management of relevant resources and activities including IT governance.

IS722 Enterprise Modeling and Information Technology Solutions 3 credits Prerequisite: IS 621 Management Information Systems in Business

Study of management methods for selection of appropriate information systems and application software.

The topics cover techniques of gathering business requirements, making requests for proposal, considering selecting projects and characteristics of enterprise influential in information technology implementation

IS726 Strategic Information Technology Planning 3 credits Prerequisite: IS 621 Management Information Systems in Business

Study of concepts and important issues of information technology planning including concepts for strategic business planning, strategic information technology planning process, analysis of risks and ranking of information technology, architectural planning of information technology, generating reports on information technology for executives of organizations.

IS731 Managing Information Systems Project 3 credits Prerequisite: IS 621 Management Information Systems in Business

Study how to manage business projects in practice which deals with team work, and communication skill. Moreover, students will learn and be able to adopt quality tools in project management. After completing the course, the students should understand the management roles of project manager in problem identification and solution finding, developing project requirements, and relating those requirements to business practice.

Elective courses

IS636 Development Tools in Information Systems 3 credits

Study of software usage that is tool to maximize efficiency in developing systems with the use of versions system development methods.

The course covers basic characteristics and competency of softwares, information system development process, factors to be considered in selection of appropriate tools for the system to be developed along with training software usage to develop information systems .

IS666 Management Communication 3 credits

Study of significance of communication toward success of executives, promotion of understanding and skill implanting in efficient communication.

The course covers individual and organizational factors affecting communication to be able to analyze the pattern and channels of the communication used by group and individual, direct communication and practice of communication via several methods to achieve the goals set.

IS715 Enterprise Networking 3 credits

Study of resource allocation for centralized systems and distributed systems to be efficient and appropriate.

The course covers various topologies of networks, network development, data security, performance evaluation of networks and servers, modelling to response to requirements on quality of services and designing architectural network focusing the access to resources of large and complex systems.

IS725 Information Systems Security and Controls 3 credits Prerequisite: IS 621 Management Information Systems in Business and

Study of safeground information system resources. The course covers types of possible disasters of information system resources, piracy, privacy violation and computer and internet crimes, disaster prevention measurements and disaster recovery plans. Moreover, the course also contributes to preparation for Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA).

IS727 Management Support Systems 3 credits Prerequisite: IS 621 Management Information Systems in Business and

Study of concepts, theories and information technology contributing to efficient and effective executives’ decisions of all level of organizations.

The course covers significance of managerial support systems, huge data techniques and management methods, data warehouse data mining, selection of appropriated tools along with studying about tools for development of decision support system.

IS728 Intelligent Information Systems 3 credits Prerequisite: IS 621 Management Information Systems in Business

The course emphasizes knowledge on techniques and efficient development methods and usage of intelligent support systems.

The study covers artificial intelligent system as source of intelligent information systems and intelligent agents such as knowledge-based systems, Neuron network, etc.

IS735 Electronic Enterprise 3 credits

Study of techniques and management necessary for building and managing organizations, innovation, and modern business processes which employ technology to increase efficiency to organizations.

The course covers usage of Internet technology within the organizations for many aspect such us the electronic communication channel to support cross-functional working team ,deploying E-commerce and E-business for benefits of organizations and consumers, including impacts of E-government adoption of the government sector.

IS737 Wireless Enterprise Application 3 credits

Study of wireless technology and its application for business along with methods of wireless technology organizations or individuals use for business management.

Topics to be explored include main concepts of wireless technology that create evolution of mobility such as cellular systems, microwave radio systems, personal communications services and satellite systems. Moreover, the course focuses on wireless connection, design, management and operation of wireless technologies emphasizing their application with services for consumers and business services such as wireless CRM.

IS771 Research in Information System 3 credits Prerequisite: IS 671 Business Research Methodology

Study of research on information systems and management from information systems-related journals.

Topics to be explored include research approach and conceptual framework on information systems and comments on information systems and management research from leading journals relating to information systems to develop concept for research proposal .

Plan A: A2 (Thesis)

IS800 Thesis 12 credits

Students write and present theses under supervision of supervisors appointed by the program. Thesis Defending Committee assigned by the program will grant approval for theses with advice from supervisors.
