Informed Sign-off Sheet

Tri-C Medical Assisting Program

Eligibility for AAMA Certification Exam

Students who complete the Medical Assisting (Certificate or Associate Degree)

program at Cuyahoga Community College are eligible to sit for the Certified Medical

Assistant Examination sponsored by the American Association of Medical Assistants

(AAMA). Passing this examination permits students to use the title of Certified

Medical Assistant (CMA).

Certification is voluntary and is not a requirement to work as a medical assistant

although employers may require their MA employees to be certified.

Recently, the AAMA passed a new Disciplinary Standards and Procedures Policy.

This policy lists grounds for denial of eligibility for the CMA credential (see web site

http://www.aama-ntl.org

for details). One possible ground for denial is history of a

felony. The policy states that denial for eligibility exists if candidate was:

"

Found guilty of a felony, or pleaded guilty to a felony. However, effective March 2, 2000, the Certifying Board may grant a waiver based upon mitigating circumstances, which may include, but need not be limited to the following:

1. The age at which the crime was committed 2. The circumstances surrounding the crime 3. The nature of the crime committed 4. The length of time since the conviction

5. The individual’s criminal history since the conviction 6. The individual’s current employment references 7. The individual’s character references

8. Other evidence demonstrating the ability of the individual to perform the professional responsibilities competently, and evidence that the individual does not pose a threat to the health or safety of patients.

The Medical Assisting Program at Cuyahoga Community College will complete

a background check on all perspective students, and a previous history of

felony will not prevent you from completing this program. However, it is

our responsibility to inform you that a previous felony conviction may

prevent you from sitting for the CMA exam.

The above information has been explained to me and I understand its

contents.
