“Life in the Spirit”
May 23, 2021
9:00a & 11:00a
Greetings to everyone! We extend a warm welcome to those joining us in-person or
for our live stream worship service this morning. As we celebrate together, we hope
you will sense God’s presence as we gather.
PRELUDE “Glorious Day” Jason Ingram
I was buried beneath my shame. Who could carry that kind of weight?
It was my tomb 'til I met You. I was breathing but not alive. All my failures I tried to hide. It was my tomb 'til I met You.
You called my name and I ran out of that grave! Out of the darkness into Your glorious day! You called my name, and I ran out of that grave!
Out of the darkness into Your glorious day! Now Your mercy has saved my soul. Now Your freedom is all that I know. The old made new, Jesus when I met You.
I needed rescue.
My sin was heavy, but chains break at the weight of Your glory. I needed shelter. I was an orphan.
Now You call me a citizen of Heaven. When I was broken, You were my healing; Now Your love is the air that I'm breathing.
I have a future. My eyes are open. Those who are able may stand
WELCOME Rev. L. John Gable
THE GOSPEL PROCLAIMED IN MANY TONGUES Acts 2:17-21
‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon My slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out My Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The promises of Easter are fulfilled at Pentecost.
People: We give thanks and praise for God’s gift of the Holy Spirit.
Leader: The Holy Spirit creates and renews the Church as the community of faith in which people are reconciled to God and one another.
People: Through the power of the Holy Spirit we have the power to become faithful followers of Jesus Christ, proclaiming the Good News to all people.
Unison: In the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, let us worship God.
OPENING SONG “I Am” David Crowder & Ed Cash
There's no space that His love can't reach, There's no place where we can't find peace;
There's no end to amazing grace. Take me in with Your arms spread wide,
Take me in like an orphan child; Never let go never leave my side.
I am holding onto You. I am holding onto You.
In the middle of the storm, I am holding on, I am. Love like this, O my God, to find.
I am overwhelmed with a joy divine. Love like this sets our hearts on fire.
This is my resurrection song, This is my hallelujah come, This is why it's to You I run.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) Rev. Oscar Clavel
Gracious God, in the resurrection of Jesus Christ You have promised the power of Your Holy Spirit to be with us in all times and places, but we confess that we have chosen to seek Your presence only when we are desperate. You have promised Your love and kindness, but we have chosen to turn to You only when we find no comfort elsewhere. You have promised us the strength and power of Your name, but we have chosen to call on You only when our resources have failed us. Forgive us, Lord, and empower us to live in the guidance, love and power of Your Holy Spirit. These, and all things, we pray together and in the silence of our hearts, through Jesus Christ our risen and reigning Lord.
SILENT CONFESSION
ASSURANCE OF PARDON (John 16:13-14)
Leader: “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own, but will speak whatever He hears, and He will declare to you the things that are to
come. He will glorify Me, because He will take what is mine and declare it to you.” Friends, believe the Good News of the Gospel.
Unison: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - A Brief Statement of Faith (1983) In life and in death we belong to God.
Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.
We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the Giver and Renewer of life.
The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church.
The same Spirit, who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church.
In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom and peace.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”
With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Amen. RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS
CONGREGATIONAL STATEMENT OF WELCOME
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we welcome you to the worship and work of Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, and offer you our Christian friendship and fellowship. United by faith, we pray that together we may grow into the likeness of Christ, being faithful in every good work, to the service and glory of God.
CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Daniel Rexroth
Following the Children’s Message our children are welcome to join Mrs. Wirt in Lower Level B for our Junior Church program. They will be escorted by Mrs. Wirt at each service.
PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil;
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS John 16:5-15
But now I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And when He comes, He will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in Me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see Me no
longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but will speak whatever He hears, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify Me, because He will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that He will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Romans 8:5-17
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law - indeed it cannot, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through His Spirit that dwells in you. So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh - for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ - if, in fact, we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
SERMON Life in the Spirit Rev. L. John Gable
“But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you.”
MOMENT OF SILENT REFLECTION AND PRAYER
RESPONSE “Who You Say I Am” Ben Fielding & Reuben Morgan
Who am I that the highest King would welcome me. I was lost but He brought me in.
Oh, His love for me. Oh, His love for me. Who the Son sets free, oh is free indeed.
I'm a child of God, yes I am. Free at last, He has ransomed me,
His grace runs deep. While I was a slave to sin, Jesus died for me, yes, He died for me. In my Father's house there's a place for me.
I'm a child of God, yes, I am.
,
I am chosen not forsaken, I am who You say I am. You are for me not against me, I am who You say I am.
Yes, I am who You say I am.

IF YOU LOSE THE WORSHIP STREAM ON SUNDAY
Check to make sure that your home internet is working. If it is, that means there’s an interruption at Tab or between Tab and your house. If the issue is fixable at Tab, we will usually fix it within a few minutes, but that also means we have to start a new stream on YouTube. Keep refreshing your browser until the new stream appears on our YouTube page.
Better yet, subscribe to Tab’s YouTube page, tabindy. Hit the big red SUBSCRIBE button on the page, then the little notification “bell” next to the button. Set your notifications to “All” and you will be notified via email or on your phone whenever we go live with the new stream or post a new video. You can always change this setting later. Do it today.
If the problem is not fixable, (e.g., power failure, interruption of Tab’s internet service) we will post the service or sermon later, often later that day, but always within 48 hours. Thanks for all of your patience and support!

Please reach out to the church if you or someone you know is in need. If you are a member or friend of Tab in need, please contact Kristine Green at [email protected] for more information and application procedures. If you know of one of our neighbors in need, let them know that they can call the Community Care line at 317-805-1281 to set an appointment with Terri Thorn.
