Learning Pathways

to Degrees

Box Hill Institute and La Trobe University

Welcome

Learning is a continuous and life-long endeavour. Increasingly, educational providers are

recognising that students want a variety of options and the ability to personalise the path of formal and informal education over the course of their lives and throughout their careers. While the linear progression from school to tertiary study and into the workforce remains a popular choice for some, this straightforward pathway may take a number of twists and turns over the course of the journey. Students are becoming ever-more sophisticated in their expectations of the post-school educational experience and are understandably demanding choices that will achieve a tailored outcome. The need to gain post-school qualifi cations is imperative in a rapidly evolving and globalised world. The ability to diversify and build on an initial qualifi cation is becoming increasingly important to future success in the workforce.

At Box Hill Institute, we pride ourselves on providing a variety of opportunities for students to excel academically and to gain valuable personal and professional

experiences in their chosen fi eld of study and beyond. Going from TAFE into university is now an established pathway for many. This option allows students to build on the ‘hands-on’ experience of a TAFE education with the academic knowledge gained through a university education. Both of these skills – the practical and the theoretical – are highly valued by employers of all sectors and equip graduates to be adaptable, dynamic professionals and critical and engaged thinkers. It is with this goal in mind that we have developed a close partnership with La Trobe University. Through this partnership we have sought to provide students with practical opportunities to advance their education and strengthen their career options by moving between TAFE and university study. To facilitate this transition, we have developed clear and guaranteed pathways from our diploma and advanced diploma qualifi cations into a range of bachelor degrees at La Trobe.

I am proud to endorse these pathways into La Trobe University and wish all our future students the best for their journey down their unique educational pathway.

Mr John Maddock

Chief Executive Offi cer and President Box Hill Institute

Making university education available to everyone was one of the founding principles of La Trobe University when it was established as Victoria’s third university in 1964. It remains a core commitment today. I am delighted our recently signed “Memorandum of Understanding” and “Articulation Agreement” with Box Hill Institute (BHI) provides even more opportunities for BHI students who want to take their studies further. Our guaranteed pathways from the VET programs at BHI provide a smooth transition for students who want to further advance themselves in study areas such as nursing and other health related disciplines. Through our partnership activities with BHI, pathway opportunities will soon be expanding to other discipline areas such as Animal and Vet Biosciences, and Education.

La Trobe welcomes many TAFE students through our doors each year including those who wish to further their education a few years after graduating from TAFE. Box Hill Institute has been a partner with La Trobe for a number of years and both institutions already share resources and facilities in the nursing area.

Our recently introduced ‘Design for Learning’ methodology gives La Trobe graduates the academic and practical skills to make them highly sought after by employers, not only in Australia, but internationally, and to help you succeed we have a whole range of support services available at your fi ngertips.

The number of students studying at La Trobe is increasing year on year, drawn to the University by our world renowned excellence in research and our social justice agenda. They come to La Trobe to get a world-class qualifi cation and they go on to help improve the world.

Congratulations on your education with Box Hill Institute. I would encourage you to visit La Trobe at our beautiful Melbourne campus in Bundoora or visit our website (www.latrobe.edu.au) to fi nd out more about what La Trobe can offer you. We look forward to welcoming you to the La Trobe community.

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President La Trobe University
