What will I study?

This course focuses on the animal industries, looking at the care of animals and the jobs involved. It is designed to develop the skills and qualities relevant to the workplace. The course has aspects of written and practical hands-on work. The Introductory Certificate is completed in year one and then the Diploma in year two. Subjects include: • Animal husbandry • Caring for small animals • Grooming • Land and environment conservation Assessment

The course is assessed throughout the year through assignments, presentations and evidence files.

Next Step

You can progress on to the First Diploma in Animal Care course or Equine Studies or an apprenticeship. You may then be able to gain work within the animal care industry including jobs in pet shops, groomers, stables, kennels and catteries.

What will I study?

This course will give you a broad introduction to vocational art and design and assist in developing your personal skills and confidence. You will have opportunities to work with a wide range of materials independently and as part of a team.

You will study a variety of media and techniques including felt-making, machine/hand stitch, batik, digital/black and white photography, silk screening, collagraph and dry-point printmaking. Assessment

You will be assessed through a series of projects which will culminate in an end of year exhibition.

Next Step

You will be able to go on to the BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design or you can use this qualification towards entry onto an A-Level programme.

What will I study?

Students on this course will develop a wide range of practical skills as preparation for employment as a chef. You will learn how to carry out basic food preparation, hygiene and health and safety. You will cover the preparation and cooking of vegetables, meat, soups, salads and pastries.

Assessment

The course is assessed through assignments, presentations and evidence files.

Next Step

When you have achieved your qualification at Level 1 you can progress on to Level 2 and Level 3 or an apprenticeship. These qualifications lead to a variety of jobs within the hospitality and catering industry such as jobs in restaurants, hotels and cruise ships.

Childcare - Entry Level

What will I study?

This course teaches you practical basic parenting skills and how to care for a baby or young child. You will cover lots of interesting subjects such as pregnancy and looking after young children, setting a routine, healthy lifestyles and the importance of play and learning. The exercises are sometimes hands-on, such as bathing or feeding babies.

At the end of the course, you will have learned skills that you can use in everyday life. If you decide that working with children is right for you, you can continue on to other courses.

Assessment

There are no exams. Each unit has three tasks that you will need to complete. These may include things like making a poster about personal hygiene or making a list of things that you need to do when you take a child to the park.

Next Step

When you pass the Award or Certificate, you may go on to take the CACHE Level 1 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Caring for Children.

Childcare - Level 1

You will study the QCF Level 1 Foundation Award/

Certificate/Diploma in Caring for Children

The Level 1 Award would be achieved in year 1 and the Certificate/Diploma in year 2.

This course is designed to give you practical training and knowledge within childcare. You will learn the basic skills of caring for children and how to support their learning and can gain practical experience of working with children in a placement setting.

The course includes the following modules: • Child safety • Physical care and development • Play and the young child • Social and emotional development • Parents and carers Assessment

Assessment is completed throughout the year and you will build a portfolio of evidence.

Next Step

You can progress on to a Level 2 Diploma in Childcare and Education or a Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care and then gain work within the childcare industry at a junior level or continue on to level 3 or an apprenticeship.

Construction

City Skills Sixth Form Centre

You will study the Edexcel BTEC Level 1 Award/Certificate/

Diploma in Construction

What will I study?

This is a two year course. You will specialise in one of three fields:

• Plumbing

• Painting and decorating

• Maintenance operations - includes bricklaying, painting, carpentry and joinery, plastering and rendering For all fields you will study a minimum of four units.

Year 1 Units

• Developing building maintenance skills OR developing plumbing skills • Health, safety and welfare Year 2 Optional Units (tutor-guided) • Starting work in construction • Working as a team to move and handle resources • Developing construction drawing skills • Developing bricklaying skills • Developing carpentry skills • Developing joinery skills • Developing construction painting skills • Developing construction decorating skills • Developing electrical installation skills • Preparing for an interview • Interview skills • Producing a product Assessment

Assessment is through practical assessments and assignments.

Next Step

You can progress on to a further course in your specialist field.

Horticulture

Eccles Sixth Form Centre

You will study the Level 1 Award/Certificate/Diploma in

Practical Horticulture Skills

What will I study?

This course covers a wide range of practical skills with a large hands-on element. Background knowledge is given to help you develop general horticultural skills.

You will cover a broad range of skills in three main areas: production, amenity and landscape. This will include the following topics: • Preparing ground for sowing or planting • Planting container grown subjects • Preparing soil and applying an organic mulch • Watering a bed, border or area of plants in containers Assessment

Assessment is through knowledge tests and practical assessments.

Next Step

Horticulture qualifications can lead to employment in public or private organisations, self-employment or allow you to progress on to higher level qualifications in further education.

PC Maintenance

Eccles Sixth Form Centre

You will study for a City & Guilds Level 1

e-qualification in PC Maintenance

What will I study?

This course is an introduction to building, maintaining and repairing computers and associated software. You will learn the basics of computing systems and customer care as well as how to dismantle, assemble, install and maintain a desktop computing system.

Assessment

The course is assessed throughout the year through assignments, presentations and evidence files.

Next Step

When you have achieved your Certificate, you can progress on to other IT courses at college related to either computer hardware or software. Upon completion of these further courses, you will be qualified for a job in IT such as an IT technician or a computer engineer.

What will I study?

This course provides an introduction to the requisite skills, knowledge and experience required for a career in the public services such as the police, armed forces, ambulance or fire services. The Level 1 Certificate will be completed in year 1 and the Level 1 Diploma will be completed in year 2.

You will study the following units:

• Improving health and fitness for entry into the uniformed public service • Practical teamwork in the public service • Public service group project • Planning and participating in an event • Introduction to expedition skills • Public service careers • Personal skills for the public services Assessment

The assessment methods are centred on improving confidence and employability skills. Assessments will range from presentations and discussions to practical observations and report writing.

Next Step

You can progress to the intermediate (Level 2) Diploma in Public Services.

Hair & Beauty

What will I study?

For the Certificate you will study: • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector • Presenting a professional image • Skin care • Hand care • Nail art

For the Diploma you will also study: • Applying basic make-up • Themed face painting • Shampoo and conditioning • Hair plaiting • Styling women’s hair • The art of dressing hair • Creating an image All students must wear full uniform and are expected to have their hair styled, nails painted and make-up applied.

Assessment

The course is assessed through assignments, presentations and evidence files.

Next Step

You can progress on to an NVQ or VRQ or an apprenticeship in Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy. These qualifications lead to a variety of jobs within beauty and hairdressing salons.
