Foreword
This code was prepared by the Technical Committee on Construction Industry IT Standard under the direction of the Information Technology Standards Committee.
This first edition of this code was approved in January 2000 but its publication was withheld due to an immediate review of the code. Such a review was done because of feedback from users and vendors as a result of the implementation of the CAD Symbols Library Software.
This revised Part 2 of the code contains only symbols. Abbreviations and other drawing conventions have been removed to form Part 4 of the code. All architectural symbols have been simplified to ensure that they can be plotted on drawing paper at 1:100 scale. Furthermore, symbol naming and CAD layers have been made more consistent.
This revised code was also prepared with reference to some parts of CP 6: 1978

'Code of practice for building drawing'.The use of computer-aided design (CAD) has been extensive and is still growing in the construction industry in Singapore. The ability of CAD to allow reuse and sharing of information will contribute greatly to the productivity in building design and construction, which involves extensive information and co-ordination between all parties in building industry.
CAD files in the form of digital drawings are now a common medium of data exchange between all parties in building industry and the building authorities. The development of a set of CAD symbols for use by all bodieslparties is a component in fully realising the potential of CAD for more efficient work and communications.
This code establishes a set of generic symbols to be used by all parties in building industry who are involved in preparing and using technical documentation by means of CAD systems. It is envisaged that the set of generic CAD symbols in this code will be revised and updated regularly to adjust to changing in CAD technology.
Reference was made to symbol libraries from various standards organisations. Many symbols in this code are also contributed by consulting firms, contractors and members of professional institutions. Acknowledgement is made to these organisations that have given their permission to use the information in this code.

Scope
and objectives
This code recommends a common set of symbols to be used by all parties in the building industry in the preparation of drawings.
The objectives of this code aim to do the following:
To provide a standard set of 2D graphical symbols to represent entities of building components for the building industry.
To facilitate common understanding and interpretation of information in drawings by different users of the building industry.
To facilitate easy and efficient exchange of information

2D symbols
2D symbols represent entities of a building object in a drawing. They are drafled at 1:1 scale and are stylised for 1:100 drawings. 2D symbols are classified into three main categories and are found in Annex A. Architectural symbols

It is recommended that the file names of the symbols implemented on computer aided design platform follow the DOS file format of 8.3. The file naming convention of the symbol will follow the CAD Layer naming convention.

2000 ABOUT THE STANDARDS, PRODUCTIVITY AND INNOVATION BOARD (SPRING SINGAPORE) The mission of the Standards, Productivity and Innovation Board, or SPRING Singapore in short, is to raise productivity so as to enhance Singapore's competitiveness and economic growth for a better quality of l i e for our people. The Productivity and lnnovation focus has four key thrusts: promotion, business excellence, people excellence and service excellence.
Under its promotion thrust, SPRING Singapore spearheads the national Productivity and lnnovation Movement. The movement aims to cultivate strong commitment to productivity and innovation in all sectors of the economy and to develop a creative workforce and innovative enterprises. SPRING Singapore serves as Secretariat to the National lnnovation Council.
Using its internationally recognised Business Excellence programme, SPRING Singapore assists organisatiis to systematically achieve world-class standards of business excellence. At the apex of the programme is the Singapore Quality Award (SQA).
Under its People Excellence thrust, SPRING Singapore initiates leading-edge programmes to enhance the capabilities of the workforce. This enables them to scale new heights and achieve higher levels of productivity. SPRING Singapore administers the Skills Development Fund (SDF), which provides incentives to help companies defray the cost of training their employees. The incentives are financed through collections from the Skills Development Levy imposed on employers.

Standards and Quality
The focus area of Standards and Quality has two major thrusts: standardisation and conformity assessment, and measurement infrastructure development. These are aimed at enhancing productivity, facilitating market access, ensuring safety and health, and protecting the environment.
As the national standards body, SPRING Singapore administers the Singapore standardisation programme, which involves the development and implementation of standards in industry. As standards and conformance issues can be potential bamers to trade, SPRING Singapore actively supports the government's Free Trade Agreement (FTA) strategy to ensure market access. As the national authority for the accreditation of conformity assessment bodies, SPRING Singapore audits and accredits quality systems and the competence of quality system certifiers, inspection bodies, and testing and calibration laboratories.
SPRING Singapore enforces the Weights & Measures Act and Regulations to protect consumers by ensuring that market transactions based on weights and measures are accurate, fair and comply with the relevant standards.
As the Safety Authority, SPRING Singapore administers the Singapore Consumer Protection (Safety Requirements) Registration Scheme to ensure that the controlled goods used by consumers in Singapore are safe.
As Singapore's national metrology institute, SPRING Singapore ensures that the measurement infrastructure adequately supports the growing needs of industry. It maintains Singapore's national measurement standards for use by the industry, and provides the vital link between measurements camed out in Singapore and those in the international system.
