This Masters programme

addresses key issues including

how multinational firms decide

where and when to invest

internationally and how to

evaluate the opportunities and

challenges that face them in

different countries.

About the programme

This programme takes a dual approach to understanding international business, examining both the external (macro environmental) issues affecting an organisation, and the internal (micro environmental) factors.

During the programme you will analyse the strategic choices multinational firms make to compete in a global economy, whilst examining the effect of their actions from both a ‘developing’ and ‘developed’ country perspective.

What it gives you

You will acquire an holistic view of the international business environment, and discover how policies and

regulations established by governments and supranational institutions affect industries and firms in terms of their competitiveness. You will be able to connect the ‘micro’ firm view with the ‘macro’ view of countries and regions. You will utilise frameworks and methodologies to make sense of the interaction between firms’ strategies, and the economic and development policies of countries, and how both are affected by the changing global environment. You will not only gain an understanding of how firms are organised internally, but you will also systematically analyse how foreign markets and countries function.

Who is the programme for?

This programme is suitable for applicants with no direct specialist knowledge or experience in international business and management, and we welcome applications from recent university graduates from a wide range of disciplines.

science, this Masters programme

provides a critical and ambitious

specialisation in the field of

current challenges facing

international management

of global and trans-national

businesses and organisations.

About the programme

Distinctive in its international approach, this programme places an emphasis on a systems view of the firm with an emphasis on firms and organisations which operate in a global or international context of business. This MSc aims to balance external (macro environmental) issues affecting an organisation, and micro environmental aspects of its operation. The latter can be various other stakeholders’ perspectives in the

environment of the firm or internal aspects of operation. You will examine the relationship between the human agent and functional aspects in an organisation, and develop your understanding of the balance between people and process-driven elements.

You will assess the current ethical complexities involved in managing global organisations, and the factors involved in responsible decision-making, both in business and in society.

The dynamic learning environment involves debates, class conversations and strong individual and interpersonal interaction. Our staff will encourage you to critically evaluate existing theories, models and practices and use your knowledge and abilities to assess real-life situations. A distinctive emphasis is placed on balancing ethical perspectives and short-term, narrower economic objectives in decision-making, and how this affects the firm’s performance and its stakeholder management.

The quickest and easiest way to apply for postgraduate study is through our online application service. This allows you to complete your application, attach electronic copies of academic transcripts, certificates and other supporting information and also enables an email request to be sent to your referees enabling them to send your supporting references directly to us.

For further information on how to apply, including how to submit your application, please visit www.reading.ac.uk/pg

When to apply

Although there is no formal deadline for applications, competition for places on all our postgraduate Masters programmes is strong, so we advise that you apply as early as possible. Overseas applicants (non EU) should apply well in advance of the start of term to allow time for their UK visa application to be processed. If you have any questions at any stage, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Fees

Your fees will vary depending on your chosen Masters programme. They are normally paid in two equal instalments but arrangements can be made to pay for the whole of your programme in advance. You’ll pay a non-refundable deposit when confirming your acceptance of an offer of a place. This is part of your tuition fee and will be deducted from the total amount when you enrol.

Living costs

Please note that tuition fees do not include accommodation and other living costs. Students are advised to budget for between £160 and £240 per week depending on their accommodation charges. International students, who often need to allow for additional accommodation and living costs during the three vacations are advised to budget for at least £12,000 per year excluding tuition fees.

Scholarships and bursaries

Henley Business School provides substantial postgraduate funding. We offer a competitive range of scholarships to students from all over the world. Additional university-wide sources of funding may also be available. Please visit our website for further information: www.henley.ac.uk/level/postgraduate-business-and-management-scholarships

Career development loans

Applicants who normally live in the UK (for a minimum of three years) can apply for a Professional and Career Development Loan of between £300 and £10,000. This is a bank loan, with interest charged at a commercial fixed rate. Please visit the UK government’s Directgov website www.gov.uk for further information.

Not quite at the required level of English language proficiency for your chosen programme?

Applicants to Henley Business School whose first language is not English will be required to attain the International English Language Test Scores (IELTS), or equivalent qualifications that are accepted by the university, as defined below, to enter a programme.

However, for students who successfully complete one of the pre-sessional English Language courses run by the University of Reading’s International Study and Language Centre, a half-band credit will be applied to their English language condition.

Business & Management programmes will accept students with IELTS 7.0 and will also accept IETLS 6.0 providing the student has completed the relevant English course with us.
