PALOMAR COLLEGE CURRICULUM

Course and Program Changes Effective Fall 2012

SUBJECT:

Governing Board ratification of curriculum changes effective Fall 2012 SUMMARY:

For the past few years, efforts have been made at the state level to streamline requirements for

Chancellor’s Office review of curriculum proposals, while ensuring California Education Code and Title 5 compliance as outlined in the attached letter dated November 5, 2012 from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.

California Community Colleges are required to maintain evidence documenting that district governing board approval and college consensus has been secured for each curriculum proposal (new, substantial change, non-substantial change, and active/inactive status). In Fall 2010, an online reporting program was developed and implemented to facilitate submission of course and program changes to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. The online procedures have evolved in the past year and a recent change from the Chancellor’s Office requires a Governing Board approval date with the online submission.

The recent adoption of the new online procedures by the Chancellor’s Office directly affects curriculum changes to courses and programs previously recommended by the Curriculum Committee and the Faculty Senate to be effective Fall 2012.

The Governing Board hereby ratifies all substantial and non-substantial course and program changes recommended by the Curriculum Committee and the Faculty Senate included in the Palomar College Curriculum Inventory effective Fall 2012, as outlined in the attached “CURRICULUM ACTION ITEMS” documents dated: 9/12/11, 10/5/11, 10/19/11, 11/2/11, 11/16/11, 12/7/11, 2/1/12, 2/15/12, 3/14/12, 4/4/12, and 5/2/12.

Substantial course changes typically include: TOP code, Course Credit Status, Maximum Units, Minimum Units, Course Basic Skills Status, Course SAM priority code, Course Prior to College Level, and Course Noncredit Category.

Non-substantial course changes typically include: Subject/Catalog Number, Course Title, Transfer Status, Cooperative Work Experience Education Status, Course Classification Status, Repeatability, Special Status, CAN Code, CAN Sequence Code, Funding Agency Category, Course Program Status.

Substantial program changes typically include: new certificate under same TOP code, new degree under same TOP code, new major/area of emphasis under same TOP code, TOP code change to a different TOP code discipline.

Non-substantial program changes typically include: title change, TOP code change within the same TOP code discipline, total unit change, addition/removal of courses.

DETAILS:

See attached: California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Curriculum Inventory Update letter dated November 5, 2012, and actions taken by the Palomar College Curriculum Committee and Faculty Senate effective Fall 2012.

B. TECHNICAL CORRECTIONS

1. To submit the program Medical Office Specialist to the Chancellor’s Office as an A.S. Degree Major or Certificate of Achievement instead of an A.A. Degree Major or Certificate of Achievement. This is a degree affected by the conversion of S.T.E.M. and CTE from A.A. degrees to A.S. degrees.

Program Title: Medical Office Specialist Discipline: Office Information Systems (OIS)

Award Type: A.A. A.S. Degree Major or Certificate of Achievement Total Units: 23-24

Reason for Reactivation: The program was deactivated for the 2010-11 catalog in order to update the Administrative Medical Assisting program. The coordinator of the AMA program retired in December 2009. Medical front-office employment is viable so the reinstatement of the MOS (Medical Office Specialist) with edited and new courses will prepare students for gainful employment. Student Learning Outcomes and Assessment information present.
