Vitae

        SUMMARY    José Ruela received the Diploma degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Porto, Portugal, in 1972,  and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sussex, UK, in 1982.   He started his academic career as a lecturer in 1972 at FEUP, where he is an Associate Professor since 1988, giving 

courses in Data and Computer Communications, and Broadband Networks. Although retired since December 

2011, he still keeps a contract with FEUP that includes academic and scientific duties, especially the supervision of  students and management of research projects. 

His research activities were mainly carried out at INESC Porto, since 1985. He was Research Manager of the 

Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit since 1996 until the end of 2011 and holds at present a position of 

Research Coordinator.  

For the past twenty years he has actively participated in a large number of projects funded by European R&D 

programs, as well as in other national and international projects and research contracts, both at management, 

scientific and technical level. 

He is the author of scientific papers published in international journals and conferences and has acted as a  reviewer of papers submitted to journals and conferences and as a member of the Technical Program Committee  of national and international conferences.   

His current research interests are resource management, Quality of Service and performance evaluation in high  speed networks and wireless networks.
