Author Melissa Yancy ’99 understands the challenge of finding time for reading. Yancy was on campus Nov. 10 to share her award-winning story collection, Dog Years, at Linfield’s Nicholson Library. Her book was selected as the Drue Heinz Literature Prize and published by the University of Pittsburgh Press. Here, Yancy provides advice for busy adults trying to find time for pleasure reading in their lives.

It’s easy for even once avid readers to lose the habit. Sometimes it’s blamed on shorter attention spans, but routine commitment to five-season television shows (50 hour narratives!) would suggest otherwise. There is so much quality writing out there, and too little time to consume it all. Drop any guilt you might have about what you’re not getting to – that doesn’t help – and make reading easier on yourself.

Short salvos. Some of the most timely, provocative work today is in the short form. Traditional venues like The New Yorker are still standouts. The finely curated One Story delivers a single short story to your door every three weeks. For the tech-savvy, the Great

Jones Street app aspires to be the Netflix of the

short form, and long-time favorites like The Kenyon Review

publish special online content.

Take a minute for poetry. The challenge and the power of poetry is that it requires your full attention, if only for a moment. But what else can enrich your life in just a minute or two a day? Pick up a Best American Poetry anthology and keep it as a bedside devotional that will last you the entire year.

Commute buster. I listen to podcasts and audio books every day. My commute is my favorite time to catch up on essayists like Roxane Gay and Leslie Jamison. If your mind tends to wander, start with Jon Ronson reading his own books on audio — he leads you right down the rabbit hole with him.

The power of connections

I recently learned of a product called “What’s Your Word,” a bracelet inscribed with a single word chosen by the buyer. If I had to focus on just one word that holds meaning in my professional life, it would be connect. I believe there is power in connection, and our connections at Linfield can be even more powerful because of our size.

In my role as director of alumni and parent relations, I want to help you find, build and maintain connections. Our team wants to bring together alumni, students and parents – on campus and off – at various events. Keeping in touch with our alumni is good for the college, of course, but it’s also

good for you. I firmly believe that the Wildcat network can have meaningful impact for you socially and vocationally. The first step in making these connections is ensuring we can reach you. Last fall, we approached alumni through email and mail to update contact and employment data. The improved information will help us keep you connected with upcoming events and messages. We also plan to launch new programs and tools that will make reaching others in the Linfield community easier.

Linfield wants to make 2017 a rewarding year for alumni, and our connections will help us do that. We’re here for you via email, phone or social media. When you reach us, feel free to let us know what your word would be.

Separately Casey Jones ’07 and Meghan Gillen ’13 are serving as Peace Corp volunteers in Uganda, East Africa.

Jones is a volunteer in the Global Health Service Partnership serving as an assistant lecturer of nursing at Muni University in Arua, West Nile. Gillen is an education volunteer in Kabulasoke in Gomba District.

Their sites are at least 15 hours apart by car, and the two had never met, but a chance introduction while preparing Thanksgiving dinner for new U.S. literacy volunteers changed that. They spent the day cooking together and realized they are both Wildcats. “We immediately high-fived on that discovery,” reports Jones.
